Baritones and basses sound similar though...I have both, and I can't differentiate the sounds on an open low E on my baritone, and an open low E on my bass.
Well I have a baritone and I can tell the difference between that and my friends bass. If by what you are say then I could play his bass in my guitar amp and any guitarist knows that won't work because of the bass frequencies, which will destroy the guitar amp. |
Because the production on MoP is that "old" production sound, and AJFA had horrible production? St. Anger and AJFA are the worst two albums, production wise.
Yea, that was 20 years ago though. It probably would have been alot better now if that guy even still produces music. I see how metallica does it now though. Rasmussen made AJFA bad production, and fired. Then bob rock makes st. anger, and boom, fired. |
I dont think the production on AJFA is that bad.
|
Same here, except the bass. The bass comes in randomly at chorus, and it's quite bad. I was listening to blackened in a car the other day, and sounded pretty bad bass-wise compared to RTL/KEA stuff I normally listen to.
|
I've said this before, but bad quality or not, the rythm tone kicks ass.
I didnt think it was that bad either, I'll listen to it again... |
Justice is my favorite album of all time. I can't hear the bass but rare spots so I don't really think about that. Production wise I think it's good. Not the best but not bad. Justice was pretty much Metallica by themselves though.
|
I usualy have a hard time hearing bass in Metallica. Not as much as before but still, its in realy low in the mix.
But yeah, AJFA is probably my favorite Metallica album. NP Opeth - Forest of October |
And hence why the production was bad, because it was the basically band producing it with pretty much no prior knowledge of sound engineering. That's why the drums are pushed to the front, the bass guitar is non-existant, and from what I remember, the leads sounded bad. Rick Rubin's production ftw.
Hearing the bass in any album but AJFA is easy if you play bass. The highest it's been in the mix was probably ReLoad or Kill 'Em All, ironically. |
He did one album with Viovoid, then there is Echo Brian and he has a new one that I don't know what it's called. It's not metal or rock, anything like that.
I seem to recall Jason was in Flotsam & Jetsam before joining Metallica, but that site doesn't mention it, so maybe he wasn't? I've never heard of them but from what someone else posted he was in that band. |
Doomsday for the Deceiver

Iron Tears (3:50) (Jason Newsted) 3. Desecrator (3:46) (Jason Newsted) 4. Fade to Black (2:04) (Jason Newsted, Jennifer Lowe) 5. Doomsday for the Deceiver (9:10) (Jason Newsted) 6. Metalshock (8:14) (Jason Newsted, Eric A.K.) 7. She Took an Axe (5:13) (Jason Newsted) 8. U.L.S.W. (4:19) (Jason Newsted, Ed Carlson) 9. Der Fuhrer (5:45) (Jason Newsted) 10. Flotzilla (6:09) (Flotsam and Jetsam) I guess I was off on the "by himself" part, but regardless. They're an underground thrash band from Phoenix. That album and their 2005 album Dreams of Death were both amazing. |
Flotsam & Jetsam is a good band, everyone should listen to them!
I have a cover of Battery, which is apparantly by Flotsam & Jetsam, easily the best metal tone imo, everything about the song is better then the original imo, except the first short solo thing isn't as good as Hammett's.. In fact no one can do that solo as good as Hammett's CD Recording, even on S&M he fails.. (imo) How good's Jason's "****e..-Battery!" at the end of the chant... I wouldn't really say they're underground. |
They're not necessarily underground in the metal scene, but even in the metal scene they're not as popular as say In Flames or Metallica.
|
Few bands are as popular as Metallica, In Flames, Maiden etc...
But still, I understand what you're saying, I just think it's mis-use of the term... |
It's like a band like Sadus..they're not nearly as popular as they should be. Honestly, I think the only reason I heard of Sadus was because I fell in love with DiGiorgio's Death/Control Denied work and looked at all the other projects/bands he's worked in (Sadus obviously being his "main" band, as he was one of the founders)
|
DiGiorio as in the bassist on Iced Earth's Horror Show ?
|
Yes. He was on "Horror Show," he played on Death's "Human" and "Individual Thought Patterns," (as well as being in pre-production for a couple more of the albums), Control Denied's "The Fragile Art of Existance," Sadus's discography, etc etc.
|
Yeah I knew about Death...not realy about the other stuff.
I've only heard is stuff on Horror Show though. I plan on getting Individual Though Patterns soon... |
Control Denied
Was that Chuck's other project? |
Yeah, the more classic metal one. Definitely check it out, it has some of Steve's best work outside of Sadus.
|
Kirk can't pull that MoP solo off because of what he did in the studio. Something about almost ripping the low E off and fretting in on his pickup.
|
It still sounds pretty close though, from what I can hear, live. He plays that "note" with some kind of harmonic live, right?
|
I think he said he pretty much changed that part up or something. It's in Guitar World when he was on the cover. Most of the time when I'm at a 'tallica concert I'm to pumped up and having to good of a time to really care.

Dude, 12 fukkin 3. I went on the St. Anger tour, it was the greatest thing Ive ever seen, except for Black Label Society. |
Dude, 12 fukkin 3.
I went on the St. Anger tour, it was the greatest thing Ive ever seen, except for Black Label Society.
I've been to both BLS and MANY Metallica concerts. Metallica shows Zakk up. There stage presence is un-parallel. |
I saw Metallica with Godsmack on the Madly in Anger With The World Tour. Metallica has such an awesome pyro show. My history teacher says it's to destract from their crappy music. He thinks he's funny.

Yeah, I saw them with Godsmack once. Ranks as my number 2 favorite concert. James, Lars, Sully and Godsmack's other drummer (only know Sully's name) had a drum battle and Kirk and Godsmack's lead guitarist had a solo battle. Great show and those guys know how to do it together. |
You're lucky... I didn't get to see any battles. Though the whole thing with Sully and the drummer on those revolving stadiums was pretty killer.
Where did you see them? |
You're lucky... I didn't get to see any battles. Though the whole thing with Sully and the drummer on those revolving stadiums was pretty killer.
Where did you see them?
When I was down in San. Fran. Oh yeah man. When Sully goes out to the crowd and gets up that temple and then they have some indian drum battle. That is killer. One of the most original things I've seen. I don't know, there is just something about Metallica's presence though. They don't really try but the presence is just...ahhhhh. It's insane. Anyone who has been to a Metallica concert knows what I'm talking about. |

So am I, Ive got a BLS tattoo on my back, but thats beside the point. Everyone is fukkin die hard. Metallica is really insane too. Its really close. Probably because Black Label Society has Zakk Wylde, and Im a Zakk Wylde fanatic. But, Kirk Hammett can really play too. He ranks 3rd on my all time favorites list. Hes the reason why I started playing guitar. :) |
Well, In Flames isnt really that popular.
Actually they are. I saw their video on MTV, or MTV2, not sure the other day. But they're nowhere near metallica's popularity though. |
In Flames is probably the most popular melodic death metal band. Maybe Arch Enemy.
BLS is pretty much Zakk Wylde driving his guitar between his legs and the other guys standing there playing. |

Yeah, thats what I was referring to. Metallica wise. |

Zakk Wylde can stand there and do that all he wants to.. as long as hes playing. =\ Thats all Im there to see. Zakk Wylde doing what he does best. |
Well, In Flames isnt really that popular.
Compared to Flotsam & Jetsam, they are, and Flotsam & Jetsam is an older band. |
Compared to Flotsam & Jetsam, they are, and Flotsam & Jetsam is an older band.
123 LoL Zakk Wylde can do whatever he wants as long as it sounds as good as it does. What's gonna become of all these metalheads when they are like 70?...that's gonna suck |
Ozzy's 58 and he pretty much can't do anything musical-wise anymore. Most metalheads will probably die before 70 too. All that alcohol and drugs can't be too good.
I think Master is easiest to hear the bass on, but maybe that's just me...
Nah man it's easily the black album Iam a bassist and I'd consider myself quite good at being able to pick up the tone. This is how I rate the albums tone wise. Kill Em All 8/10 Ride The Lightining 7/10 Master Of Puppets: 9/10 And Justice For All: 2/10 Black Album: 10/10 Load: 8/10 Reload: 8/10 Garage Inc: 9/10 Saint Anger: 7/10 The Black album you can hear the bass so perfectly for each and every song. I think Jason used a Stuart Spector for most of this album and this is a bass with some growl which you can definetly hear throughout the album. |
I never listen to Black Album so I don't know :p
