Finally someone is with me on that.

Daven 04-25-2006 08:07 PM
Is it just me or is Vicarious reminiscent of Schism
Not really. The song isn't based on his little hammer on triplet in Vicarious like it is in Schism, although I do agree it's certainly present. One, I think it's just a part of Adam's style, but two, I think by using that song as the single, those that have strong memories of Schism will hear the similarity and be more prone to check it out. I think The Pot sounds a lot like something we could have heard on Undertow while we're on the topic.

Thats basically what I was getting at.

Pauly 04-26-2006 01:43 AM

10,000 days, the song, really reminds me of music from Jean Michel Jarre or Vangelis.

I'm Charming 04-26-2006 02:05 AM

Tomorrow.

I'm going to listen to Anima and Lateraus. See what I think. I used to love Anemia so maybe I'll fall in love with it again.

the bridge/solo section in schism is very similar to the beginning of vicarious you gotta remember tool uses d minor for almost all of their songs so there are certain parts that althought not repeated are very similar to previous songs because they only use one key

Shadius 04-26-2006 06:12 AM
I really like Wings For Marie, but i dont like too much 10,000 Days.
I'm the opposite. Don't get me wrong, Wings is... pretty, yet lacking, but 10,000 Days is excellent.
I think The Pot sounds a lot like something we could have heard on Undertow while we're on the topic.
I don't think Maynard could sing like that back then, the music though? Maybe parts of it, but overall I think it's beyond Undertow's sound. I see what you're getting at though.

Vicarious only sounds a little like Schism because of notes used, and the key of the song, as mentioned... the melodies are all completely different though.

NymphetamineX 04-26-2006 10:11 AM

The intro to Vicarious reminds me a bit of The Patient. Awesome song, all the same. I was so happy when it came on the radio when I was driving the other day. Haven't had a chance to hear the rest of the album, but I think I'll wait 'till it actually comes out.

At the Tool Army there's some hype about this:

http://www.play.com/Music/CD/4-/1001186/Salival/Product.html

That'd be pretty sweet.

RideTheSpiral 04-26-2006 10:56 AM

Re-release? Urgh.

kurrpt 04-26-2006 11:00 AM

that would be amazing if they re-released salival + the DVD. I missed the DVD the first time around

ShadowMan 04-26-2006 11:01 AM

I'd get it. I have the vhs, which was actually signed my Maynard. Wouldn't mind the dvd though.

RideTheSpiral 04-26-2006 11:03 AM

Tool are such commercial whores.

kurrpt 04-26-2006 11:04 AM

care to explain you basis for such an absurd claim?

RideTheSpiral 04-26-2006 11:06 AM
care to explain you basis for such an absurd claim?
Are you serious? Everything they do is about building a marketable image and they're cashing in big time.

kurrpt 04-26-2006 11:07 AM
Are you serious? Everything they do is about building a marketable image and they're cashing in big time.
o, so really its a biased statement that has no backing except an "observation" that is considered subjective.

Huber 04-26-2006 11:19 AM

I don't know about you guys, but I don't think if Tool had to have second jobs to pay their bills, than they wouldn't have time for Tool. They have to get money somehow.

Edit: Another little buzz on Tool Army was the Digipak. Some guy said it will be sold at Tower Records. I'd have to drive a good ways for that :(

kurrpt 04-26-2006 11:20 AM

not since they started getting big (undertow to ænima days)

AJ actually does special FX for big movies

Maynard has like 3 side projects.

Huber 04-26-2006 11:22 AM

Yeah, my point is though is they can't just drop all the things that make them money with music to make it free. That idea just doesn't work. People have this idea that musicians are so damn rich that they're set for life. The only reson they're set for life is because people will continue to invest in their music, so they plow on with it.

kurrpt 04-26-2006 11:26 AM

thats one way to look at it...

but i guarentee, after this tour, TOoL members will be set for life. Will they stop making music? I highly doubt it

Prince of Darkness 04-26-2006 11:29 AM
Tool are such commercial whores.
I wouldn't agree with this. Tool are quite unknown compared to mainstream acts. They are the ones cashing in and getting all the airplay. Saying that tool are commercial needs backing. Tool have commented on commercial awarness many a time, and the message they give over is that the music is what they are selling, not their faces. So if you mean commercial in a sense of publicity, you are mistaken. But, Tool in America is so much different from Tool anywhere else. Because of Tool being based in America, they get a lot more airplay and video play on MTV2 for example. But in the rest of the world(espesialy South Africa), Tool doesn't really get any attention. So apart from America, Tool are unknown to most, unless you have good taste in music.

So Tool will never be commercial whores to the full extent because they just aren't mainstream enough to make it happen. And it doesn't really fit their image, IMO.

Esoteric_Creator 04-26-2006 11:41 AM

Not to mention that Salival was a limited release. Not everyone was able to get this CD/DVD/VHS when it originally came out..

The closest a person can come to getting the CD is by paying some bastard $200 if not more. Hell, I think Tool are f u c king benevolent to re-release this this album, so I don't have to pay some fat f u c k e r an arm and a leg..!

Think of how pissed people were whenever the scalpers bought all the tickets only to sell them at unheard of prices. This was no different when the Salival album came out..

Adam Jones is GOD 04-26-2006 11:54 AM

I'll feel less special if it gets re-released. I dug hard to find my copy

But its a good move, a lot of people missed out and deserve it.
So apart from America, Tool are unknown to most, unless you have good taste in music.
Nah, they're pretty damn well known out here (Belgium). They're playing the biggest rock festival of Belgium (www.rockwerchter.be) and the biggest hall in The Netherlands, the same where such acts as David Gilmour have played in recent times.

So that was my first post in this thread. I like Tool quite a bunch. I own Aenima, Lateralus and 10 000 Days (illegal, but I'm gonna buy it once it comes out). I really like the feel of 10 000 Days, very atmospheric.

:D

I shall ask for a copy to be purchased for my birthday. Though that never seems to work these days, no reading ticket for rob :(

It was pretty funny, i went to see Panic! at the disco last night (second time, they were amazing again :D) And i was chatting to the DJ in the support act (Men Women & Children) and i mentioned i'm a pretty big tool fan. Then we had a rather long discussion on wether the leak was real or not, it just seemed wierd because his band play disco music and stuff. But it was pretty cool.

denboy 04-26-2006 01:03 PM

Men Women & Children rock!.. .. Even though I've only heard one song by them

Adam Jones is GOD 04-26-2006 01:05 PM

Tool fans come in all shapes and sizes, and are increasing with the release getting closer. Wearing my APC shirt and my patched-up jacket (with salival patch proudly on the pocket :) ), I got no end of 'hey, a Tool fan' comments, followed by explaining about the single, leak details, etc.

You could say I was the Tool emissary today, spreading the word to the young deciples

kurrpt 04-26-2006 01:07 PM

honestly...

im starting to get disgusted by the average TOoL fan on the street that approaches me. Not because i feel im MORE of a fan, or any of that garbage...

it seems to me that later fans think they tapped this well of insane music, and assume no one else has stumbled upon the same thing, or they are some HUGE Maynard fan (which is fine) and worship him like a god
