Better than most of the metuhl I've heard.

TriggerNYC 01-31-2010 01:49 PM

wow what a waste of time. he prob shoulda have used an open tuning on those guitars. the possibilities coulda been endless.

ive also stumbled upon a video of a bunch of birds on telephone wires, and some guy transcribed the way they were standing into notes, and wrote a little musical number around it.

(fyi by stumble upon i mean stumbleupon.com awesome tool for boredom)

Dev is awesome.

Sad But True 02-01-2010 06:30 PM

oshi error occurred

Did he shave off the skullet?

Plankis 02-01-2010 06:34 PM

oshi, it works now.

Sad But True 02-01-2010 06:39 PM

NOOOOOOOOO!!!!

He looks like a cancer patient without the skullet :(

But he's still got one of my favourite voices, both signing and screaming. I love singing along to Let it Roll off Synchestra. What are the best DT solo albums aside from Synchestra?

Plankis 02-01-2010 07:02 PM

The bassist seems to have taken over the skullet...
Apparantly he wanted to get away from the crazydev-image he's gotten. That's how I remembered the reason.

I'm so amazed how he manages to nail supercrush live. That ain't guaranteed these days...
I like Infinity, accelerated evolution and addicted. Most of the other albums are a bit too ambient/random to me. But there some golden songs on them aswell.

Sad But True 02-01-2010 07:06 PM

I liked crazy Dev, but it was awesome how he'd be the quiet funny guy and then get on a stage and scream "I SUCK DICKS FOR CRACK MONEY!"

****ing idiot

for some reason that video is one of the most beautiful things ive seen in my life

Plankis 02-01-2010 07:16 PM

When you think about it his personality isn't that strange. Something always get compensated. He got an incredible talent for music, but lost his sanity instead.

To be honest it stirred nothing in me. I just saw it as another ridiculous excuse for art where lack of talent or ingenuity is compensated for with abstractness.

i don't think it's permissible to interpret this kind of installation as abstract when its materials are entirely concrete

what i mean by finding it beautiful is that i simply love the sound of the guitar and i'm delighted by the sense that the pressure of the birds and their movements is communicated to us in this very immediate way, that the abstract concept of a distant event beyond what is seen can be made concrete in other senses with artistic tools

idk, to me it's an interesting way of observing nature and its place in time, much like the zadar sea organ, it allows me to understand complex natural phenomena in human terms which one could argue is the goal of many more traditional artists

Sad But True 02-01-2010 08:25 PM

I was trying to be polite with the word 'abstractness', what I really wanted to put was stupidity. To me, it doesn't allow me to understand anything. It doesn't help me to understand nature or music or sound any better. I'm no art critic or whatever but I know when a piece moves me. Oddly enough I thought the Zadar organ was really good; there's just something about it that made sense and didn't just seem like "LOL PUT GEETRS IN WITH BIRDS N MAKE NOYZE". I know it's basically the same concept but this one just doesn't do it for me.

I think my mine gripe with that piece is that it seems half arsed. A bit like someone throwing a can of paint at an easel and selling it for thousands because some snotty tosspot said it was the visual representation of human frustration. Sure, it could be, and hey that's kinda the main point of art to interpret it for yourself, but when I see somethrow a tin of paint at some canvas all I see is a lazy, unoriginal artist.

Á Bao A Qu 02-01-2010 08:27 PM

That bird video didn't provoke any sort of response for me either, TBH. I just wondered what the point was and was kind of relieved when it was over.

I just don't think this particular installation needs anything more, it produced an interesting musical texture which is all that matters. to me, anyway.

i share your gripe with a lot of modern art because i think that more and more people are encouraging the fatuous use of individual symbols as image or representation, and that's wrong because to my mind artists are supposed to create interactions and spaces in time.

I'm with you on the last point mate, a lot of modern art is very simplistic in its symbolism; there's no complex thought patterns.

EDIT: Holy awesomesauce I know it's only a tuner but I want one:
