Efrim 10-07-2006 12:33 AM

Never heard of it. What is it?

I'm doing a speech on Marcel Duchamp.

The Brad 10-07-2006 12:36 AM

Want my "flawless" B paper?:p

Efrim 10-07-2006 12:39 AM

Yes.
I was planning on just talking about his paintings technically, instead of his "significance" in Europe.

The Brad 10-07-2006 12:42 AM

1) Title: Nude Descending a Staircase No. 2

2) Name of artist: Duchamp, Marcel

3) Date created: 1912

4) Media: Oil on canvas

5) Style/Period: Cubo-Futurist, France

6) Stylistic Context: This painting exhibits such an interesting culmination of modernist styles it is no wonder why it was so upsetting when it was unveiled European modernity before the academic art minded crowd of New York circa 1913. This piece served as the genesis of American modernity, its formless fusion of Cezanne’s cubism with the Italian Futurist’s passion for dynamism to depict a tubular, almost, robotic woman’s descent down a staircase. The ambiguity of the female’s form, much like an artist’s wooden model, gives credence to the notion that perhaps Duchamp was the progenitor of Dada.

7) Subject: What is displayed in this piece is the frame-by-frame dynamism of a nude female figure descending a staircase.

8) Description: This composition could be described in one of two ways, the Teddy Roosevelt way, as “an explosion in a shingle factory” or as a series of dynamic blurs which trail the movements of an overly simplified woman, which much resembles a wooden artist’s model, descending a staircase. Her world is one of monochrome with warm earthy tones of umber and brown, she herself is variety of tan shades to accentuate the color scheme. With each step she takes her previous move is consumed by brown and converted to shadow. The stairs seem to retract below her very feet, disappearing beneath her; although they retract, they still give the piece an asymmetrical feel with their leading line. The woman’s body in the final frame of her captured motion resembles Papier Mache with the way contrasting darks and lights make her body pop off the canvas, giving the viewer’s mind the sense that her physique is perhaps something tangible.

9) Symbolism: According to some, this painting is symbolic of the one fatal flaw of Cubism, motionlessness. Rather than painting the nude from multiple view points at one moment he portrays the woman from one view at multiple moments-essentially inverting Cubist theory.

10) Personal commentary: I selected this painting because it was something I was familiar with, never mind the fact that I could not find enough information on the other paintings I had thought about writing the analysis on, but through researching Duchamp and this painting it became more endearing. The sheer strength of which this painting was rebuked when unveiled, both times, and to what end it haunted Duchamp both resonate an immediate response. The more enjoyable aspects of this work include the fact that you can stare at it for extended periods of time and continue to find new things, as far as taste-nude cannot be beat. Seriously though, I am comfortable with this painting I do not find it truly shocking and generally enjoy the fact that it was found to be such.

11) One interesting fact: The piece had been rejected from the French Salon des Indépendants, a Cubist art exhibition, about a year prior to its 1913 showing at the Armory Show in New York City. It should be noted that the French “academic Cubist group” which juried and rejected the piece were made up of Duchamp’s peers and brothers; they thought that the subject matter was too traditional, the title was too cartoonish, and it was poking fun at Cubism.

Efrim 10-07-2006 12:45 AM

Granted, I'll have to re-word it some, and give it a biting sarcastic edge, but thank you.

Why did you only get a B on it? I would have given you over 90. But then again, I'm just an art teacher......oh wait, no, I'm not.

The Brad 10-07-2006 12:46 AM

I really have no idea, he said it was flawless and gave me a 17.33/20 (86%)
I want to ask him about it but I don't wanna seem like a little bitch.
