I´m fully aware this doesn´t belong in R/M but since other music has no such thread(that I can easily discover. The fück I´m searching for it when I know people here are just as competant...) I thought I´d ask around in this here thread. So,here´s the big question: What Björk album(s) to get?
I'd say all of them, rather unhelpfully. Nothing she's released yet has been perfect, but I think it's always worth listening to.

For a start though, I favour Homogenic.

DanD 01-16-2006 10:40 AM

I'm interested in Frank Zappa, but there is sooo much. Where is a good place to start?

Bartender 01-16-2006 10:44 AM

Freak Out! is a rock album. It's one of his best, without being too weird or esoteric, or otherwise offputting, for a newcomer.

Ve Das 01-16-2006 10:50 AM

Thanks folks,I´ll check those out :-)

Drunken Viking 01-16-2006 08:40 PM

Thrash or speed like Mercyful Fate, Judas Priest, Annihilator, Megadeth, you might want to check out power metal bands like Sonata Arctica, Angra, Blind Guardian.

Or something popular like Metallica or Iron Maiden.

Leukeh 01-18-2006 05:34 AM

Ok my friend is getting into Slipknot due to my influence (I'm not looking for a flame!) but he wants to find some bands that sound something like them. I can't think of any right now, although I probably do know some. What can I suggest to him?

3 inches of blood(vocalist sounds like Halford lol), Black Label Society, pantera, mushroomhead, mudvayne, Sepultura(you might qualify that as growling, i don't know), soilwork. You probably already listen to some of these, If you were asking for growling metal, i could of helped you out better.

Sph 01-18-2006 01:46 PM

What's some good progressive (rock or metal) stuff? Pink Floyd and Porcupine Tree are the only progressive bands I really know.

Also, what are some similar bands to Muse?

the2stranger 01-18-2006 02:01 PM

I really liked Elvenking (decided to check them out recently), the mix between metal & folk music is SOOOO beautiful! So I'd like to hear some more similar music. Give me tips of other nice folk metal bands. I've heard Finntroll & Cruachan already. Thanks!

NicetoKnowyou 01-20-2006 03:26 PM

Im going to buy another rush album, can anyone reccomened a good one?

( i already have rush, fly by night, 2112, moving pictures, and rush in rio)

Ensameheten 01-21-2006 10:06 AM

Thanks stoic and txus even though i already knew about moonsorrow.

I have another question, Now normally i would be against trying to "convert" people to listen to my kind of music, but desperate times call for desperate measures: i'm sick to death of being the only person i know who listens to metal. can anybody think of some good bands/albums/songs that non-metalheads might enjoy, and could potentially lead them down the path towards metaldom? especially for people who listen green day, and that kinda stuff...

Txus 01-21-2006 10:10 AM

Well man first I guess you'd have to begin with rock stuff (like Evanescence)
the next step would be giving them some gothic metal (Within Temptation, Sentenced....... they won't notice the difference) then give it a little harder style (like Nightwish, Iced Earth, Blind Guardian) then give them some HEAVY ****ING METAL (Iron Maiden, Manowar, Judas Priest) then start with the growl vocals, best choice would be some melodic death metal (Children Of Bodom, In Flames, Norther, Kalmah, Wintersun and even Opeth) at this point some symphonic/black metal could help in making raw black metal sound more comfortable (Dimmu Borgir, Cradle Of Filth)Then start with the Black side of metal (Immortal, Emperor, Darkthrone).

Then you'll have metalheads who listen to metal more than you, Good Luck man.

Try some less extreme stuff first. I got my sister into metal by doing the following:

I got her into AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Rush, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath by playing it a lot whenever she was around.

I then started playing Metallica, Iron Maiden and Judas Priest.

I then I began to play Helloween, Dream Theater and Symphony X.

I then tried some Melo-Death, but she didn't like the vocals. Start lighter and then get progressively heavier. My sister seems to like power metal now. Also point out that all metal bands are not devil worshipers who are homicidal/suicidal. Point out the level of musicianship that many bands have.

Just remember that metal isn't for everyone and that being too pushy could turn them off.

EDIT: Beaten because of two finger typing. Damn my own two hands!

Stoic 01-21-2006 01:36 PM

...and always pick the catchiest songs :thumb:

Sph 01-21-2006 02:18 PM

I'd also recommend keeping them away from anything overly technical at first. Stuff like that needs to grow on some people.

Before I started listening to metal I was really put off by bands like Death, early Metallica and Megadeth. Now they're some of my favourites.

Start with Opeth's Damnation, and work your way from there. :)

Opera metal, in Nightwish fashion:
The Gathering
Epica
Tristiania (although they are a bit more focused on growled male vocals)
Kamelot (male fronted)
Rhapsody (male fronted)
Angra (male fronted)

That should be a good start.

Porcupine_F*cker 01-21-2006 10:46 PM

Carcass: Necroticism- Descanting the Insalubrious, and Heartwork.
Arguably maybe two of the 20 best metal albums of all time.

gillygan 01-21-2006 10:47 PM

i want to get into these artists: Derek trucks, Albert King, Isis, Public Enemy,Suicidal Tendencies, King Diamond, The Roots, John Mayer Trio, Al di Meaola, Rush, Charlie Hunter, Stratovarius, Finntroll, Jeff beck, Radiohead, Joy division, and The Violent Femmes. Wich albums should i get for starting of on those artists?

I know a lot arent rock, but im not sure were else to put it. And wich ones are awsomley awsome? i wanna know wich ones to get first.

Thanks :chug:

Shattered_Future 01-21-2006 11:08 PM

Rush = 2112 or Counterparts I find are the best
King Diamond = Abigail
Finntroll = Nattfodd
Stratovarius - Elements Part 1
