Here's a good question: When do we get to see the new beasts?
I think you guys will see them when I see them... I haven't got any new pics in awhile. :upset:

Jean Baudin 08-05-2005 11:05 AM
Mr. Baudin, you such an inspiration to me, like i posted on your myspace account(like youd know it was me or anything) your music, especially "Frosty Acres" has helped me through alot of times, and no joke, after about a half hour after hearing that song, i decided to get me an ERB. Now for a question, how long did it take you to build your first 9 stringer, or was it built for you, how did you design it, get the specs, etc. sorry for so many questions but i really like your basses and your music.
much love and respect,
ben
Hey ben. well, I certainly didn't build them myself. I have a problem just holding a screwdriver - building an instrument is way beyond my scope.

my first 9 was modeled after my custom 5 I had made for me in high school. the spacing of the strings is the same as that bass (15mm) which is narrower than most basses. for future basses, I've tried to vary the woods and tones so they all sound a little different from each other. the pac bass has a deep tone whereas the retro bass is more punchy and also had the midi thing going on so I can play different patches through it (piano, organ, violin, etc.).

these guys make great extended range basses:

watch out though, they aren't cheap.

Papa Shank 08-05-2005 11:05 AM

hey Jean, don't know if this has been asked before but have you got any transcriptions for tapping on your 9 stringers? or are you just using sheet music?
I'm looking to learn touchstyle you see.

Jean Baudin 08-05-2005 11:16 AM
That Vintage 9 is amazing.

Now, when is the Hideous Claw and Joust 9 going to be completed? Any progress shots? Over at TB members when mentioning how Conklin was finally able to move on with other projects because your herd is nearly complete, so what's the story?! WHEN CAN WE SEE MORE!?!?!?

Ya know, if you wanna bring Nuclear Rabbit to the UP of Michigan, I'd be glad to let the band stay at my house!
My conklin 11 still doesn't have the fretboard glued on - it's closer, but certainly not nearly complete. I still don't have a new picture of that one. Funny, my bass was ordered long before his and his is more complete! :amaze:

The hideous claw will remain a mystery until it's finished. Part of the deal I made with the builders.

The KL Joust (it's an 11) bass is getting acclimated (sp?) for my weather down here and he's getting ready to make the wood bridge for it (ken has already made 3 mock bridges to get the saddles right). After that is the electronics and the Oil/Wax finish and it's done.

As I said a couple posts back that I haven't got any new pictures in awhile.

As for when they are completed I have no clue... they are all WAY behind schedule. The claw started in 11/03 - the k. lawrence was ordered 12/03 and the Conklin bass 1/04. I'm hoping they all be finished by September (probably the Joust bass first).
Sorry not familiar with that. Is that an internet thing?
Gaming comic. http://www.penny-arcade.com/ Gabe has a Pac-Man shirt, and tattoo in the comic. It's a rather funny read.

I tried to transcribe one once but it's too **** hard. each note has 4 pieces of information (string, fret, hand, finger) sometimes there are 2-4 fingers on the fretboard on the same moment - I had sat down with my girlfriend at the time, to try and recite it to her and it was taking like 10 minutes to do one measure... we gave up pretty quickly.

I usually learn by ear - but I will have the sheet music handy if I come across a part I'm having problems with.

Papa Shank 08-05-2005 11:35 AM

ah well, I'll figure a way around it thanks anyway :)

Tryxx 08-05-2005 11:38 AM

Have you ever given any thought to a graphite neck or composite fretboard? They're rather awesome to tap on, and the tone is so even and dynamic. I would think they'd be perfect, at least in some situations, for you.

Hey tryxx - the only guys that make 'em (that I know of) are Modulus and Zon... and they both stop at 6-strings. Apparently, you have to have a mold to make a neck - so I think custom one-off would be too expensive.

I've played Michael's hyperbass and it was a smooth neck and very easy to play.

Jean Baudin 08-05-2005 01:27 PM

Okay, just got off the phone with one of the producers at G4TV and they are going to have to reschedule me... apparently, they didn't have me booked as a musical guest (???? ) and they only have music guests on Friday's (I was going to be on Thursday) and they have their friday's booked for the next two months so he's going to get back to me with a new date later. Oh, well - maybe that will give me time to sneak an 11 on the show. :naughty: :naughty: :naughty:

So sorry guys - no G4 appearance this month.

tenorbass 08-05-2005 01:30 PM

hey Jean nice to hear you again my brother. how long will you be on this tv show? when its put up on your site will it be all of what you did on the show? Do you sing alot in Nuclear Rabbit? is it hard to sing when you play? When your tapping do you use all fingers on the left and right hands or does the pinky get left out? thanks for your time man.

tenorbass 08-05-2005 01:33 PM

sorry i forgot 2 things. who is your fav guitar player? do you like buckethead? i think you and him should do a cd that would be awsome.

I'll probably just be on for a few minutes - I should be able to put a quicktime of the whole thing up. I usually just sing back up in NR. But I do sing lead on a couple of songs (supermarket, crane to the head, etc.) - It's not hard to sing and play because I rehearsed/practiced it enough times. I use all of my fingers when I tap and even both thumbs (the left thumb for long stretches or weird chords). :thumb:

There's a Modulus 7 string on ebay right now... Not quite 9, but it's better than 6! *Is happy with his Modulus Quantum 6*

favorite guitarist: jason becker, who I was fortunate to take a couple of lessons from and jam with. Shawn Lane, Joe Pass and Pat Metheny are other favorites.

Yeah, I like Buckethead. Nuclear Rabbit played shows with the Deli Creeps (the band he was in) and he and I talked about shredder guitarists - seeing as we both took lessons from them (he had studied with Paul Gilbert). Buckethead told me if made a movie he'd make me one of the villians. He would be fun to jam with... haven't talked to him in years though.

Excellent taste, good sir!

Low_End_Communications 08-05-2005 08:04 PM

Ahh, hmm. Thought the Joust was a 9.

With the wood bridge... is it like some luthiers crazy adjustabel bridges made of wood, or a single saddle thing? If single... does that mean a fretless 11?

mr_coffeekiller 08-06-2005 05:16 AM

Jean,

I read that on your influences you rate some of the great film composers near the top of the list. I was just wondering if there are any specific films you watch over and over again just for the film score. I'm working on one myself at the moment but am unsure where to look as a guideline of sorts.

Also, how do you rate Stanley Clarkes soundtracks? I know he's done the "Transporter" and "Romeo Must Die" along with a handful of others. Being that he's a bassist first and composer second, I was just curious as to what you think of his film stuff.

Cheers
CK

i have a question for anyone that can answer me, why are there 9 string basses? am i the only one on the planet that thinks there flat out ugly, i think anything past 5 strings (possibly 6) is pointless and it just looks really bad.... just my opinion

There are 9 strings so you can use them. More sounds, more creativity. It's just like having effect pedals, or a different technique, it just adds to what you can do. Some are ugly, granted, but they are useful if you know how to use them.

Low_End_Communications 08-06-2005 04:32 PM

Please NoOsh, search for my thread "Why More Than Four?" and read the enclosed article written by Mr. Stew McKenzie. Great piece, explaisn it perfectly.

Samadhi 08-06-2005 09:49 PM

the man likes shawn lane and keith jarrett! thats awesome, shawn lane's my favorite guitarist and keith jarrett's my second favorite pianist after ahmad jamal

trumpeter 08-07-2005 07:51 AM

kind of a bizzare question but...

where do you get your strings for things above 6 stringers...i would imagine they are pretty hard to come by

metalkingtiger 08-07-2005 07:09 PM

At least I found someone who knows Jason Becker, who to me if he didn't have that illness would still be the best guitarist in history. Jean, in your opinion isn't he at least one of the best?

A friend of mine is utterly utterly convinced that he IS Paul Gilbert.

Don't suppose he had his mask off backstage? :)

Low_End_Communications 08-07-2005 08:01 PM

I'm convinced Buckethead is actually a woman.

I apologize for the double post but. As a matter of fact, I live in a town right by where Buckethead came from. His father coaches Highschool Football at Damien, an all-boys private school in his hometown of Claremont as I recall. I could be totally wrong.... except for the Claremont part. Interesting tidbits of information.
