Butch Walker - Alicia Amnesia
Sounds like more modern rock than pop-punk based on the intro, though the vocals are definitely more in the vein of pop-punk. Some unique effects on the music that I can't quite pin down, but it sounds pretty cool. Some use of dynamics, which is good though a little predictable, I'm a real sucker for that right now. The vocalist is very good and I like his style, but I feel like he doesn't fit the music well. Like I said, I though this sounded like modern rock until the vocals came in, and I just don't feel like it all comes together right in the band. Pretty decent solo, nothing too show-offy, but it fits well. Real catchy riff driving most of the song too. That's probably the best part. Not much else to say, the pieces were there, but I don't think it was a good whole. 7/10 Halifax - Sydney (Pop-Punk) The Kinison - American Collectibles (Punk/Pop-Punk/Screamo?) Noise Ratchet - New Room (Pop-Punk) The Explosion - No Revolution (Pop-Punk) Scary Kids Scaring Kids - My Darkest Hour (Pop-Punk) Sorry it's all Pop-Punk this time :p |

Noise Ratchet - New Room
I've never heard of this band, so this should be interesting. It has a somewhat Foo Fighters' style intro, with a high riff being played over a heavy melody. When the vocals come in, the guitars are picked very nicely, and over the harsh drumming, it sounds very good. The vocals aren't amazing, but they work well with the upbeat pop-punk style. Another clear feature is the bass, which is very noticeable, somewhat a rarity in pop-punk. After the chorus, verse and another chorus play, there's an equally heavy bridge. It never loses it's energy or pace, which I especially like about this song. The loud shouting in the bridge also sounds great while the music changes slightly after every lyric. It ends very quickly as well, something I think works well because the song is so upbeat. An impressive pop-punk song, with nice rhythms and vocals, and a steady change in melody. 8/10 Selection: I Am The Avalanche - New Disaster (Pop-Punk) NOFX - I Am Going To Hell For This One (Punk Rock/Pop-Punk) Lorene Drive - God Knows I Love You Kid (Melodic Hardcore/Pop-Punk) Cartel - Settle Down (Pop-Punk) |
Lorene Drive - God Knows I love You Kid
Intro didn't do much for me until the riff with all the dissonance started. That sounds really cool. Lots of vocal variation, and I think the only thing I don't like is his really harsh scream, I don't think he has the voice for it. Everything else sounds quite good and I'm very impressed. Lots of effects on the guitar during the transitions too, sounds cool and adds a neat feel to the piece. Breakdown is probably the most generic part of the song, but it fits in the song so it's fine. I just wish it was even crazier. The dynamic work afterwards is real cool too, laid back guitar and soft vocals before jumping back in. Outro guitar work is probably the best guitar on the song, and it sounds really cool. Doesn't sound too tough, but it adds a lot. Overall a really neat song, and very good. If the harsh screaming wasn't in there, or was executed better, I'd consider giving it a higher score, but I think I'll just give it a 9/10 and say it was very enjoyable bar that one aspect. Halifax - Sydney
This is the firstr ime i've heards Halifax, so it should be interesting. My Dad was born in Halifax. The song starts off with a very good intro, nice lead parts with hard guitar work, a very cool riff. The singing starts and he sounds a lot like Patrick from Fall Out Boy, which isn't a bad thing imo. The verse is great, unsing the same type of riff as the intro, but with some palm muting. Teh verse leads into the chorus really nicely woith it quietining and the singer holdng a note. The chorus is less impressive compared to the verse. Good use of duel vocals in the song. After the chorus a very TBS esque part comes in, where the singer whispers in a way over lead notes, which buids up to the chorus again. Nice ending, where the chorus includes some screaming and it finishes on the same riff as the intro. WoW, i really loved this song, i really want to hear mor eof their stuff. Cheers Vince. 9/10 |

Thrice - Deadbolt
It starts very casually with a nice melodic intro. The drums sound very heavy, which I'm not feeling much, but the guitar work makes up for that. When the vocals kick in, I'm not too fond of his singing voice. It's gritty, but it doesn't sound cool. When he shouts in the chorus, it fits his vocal chords a lot better. Another heavy riff combines with a higher riff for the chorus, which sounds pretty cool. The breakdown is pretty cool, especially the riff that they play. It's got a very sub-dued feel to it, very similar to Funeral For A Friend. The melody is simple, yet repeated a lot and it sounds really good. It then breaks down into a piano melody, which sounds really off to me. Maybe it's a lead in to the next track, I'm not sure. It just seems really random to me. 7/10 from me. It had a good steady pace with decent riffs, but the bad production on drumming and poor vocals let it down for me. The breakdown made up for a bit though. Cartel - Settle Down
Starts off with a fun drum beat and then joined by the vocals and finall bass and guitar. Typical pop-punk style vocals, but they fit the music great and everything sounds well put together. Lots of neat instrumental work, dropping out at certain points to accenuate other aspects and such. Neat bridge, but the slow ridge is overdone and doesn't feel as cool. The bass fill works better than the part precluding it. Lots of neat guitar work at the end, not quite a solo at first because the vocals are stil going, but at the end it is. Solid ending too. Overall it was very generic, but good generic, so it wasn't boring and overly done or trite, but nor was it anything outstanding that really draws attention. 8.5/10 The Kinison - American Collectibles (Punk/Pop-Punk/Screamo?) The Explosion - No Revolution (Pop-Punk) Scary Kids Scaring Kids - My Darkest Hour (Pop-Punk) Open Hand - Radio Days (Indie/Pop-Punk with awesome drumming) Don't Look Down - Defined by Your Desire (Pop-Punk) |
The Kinison - American Collectibles
This song begins with a few taps on the cymbal, then leads into a cool riff. The lead singer has a tad bit annoying voice, but you could definently get used to it. The bass line is nifty, I'm a fan. Then it hits the chorus, and the guitar riff is another good one. I like the lyrics in the chorus. Second verse comes back to the nifty bass and cool guitars. The lyrics start to begin a bit cheesy, but thats okay. The bridge i think, is pretty good, I really like when the singer screams. And then the chorus repeats again. The drums throughout the whole song were good, I really liked the beat. I give it a 8.5/10, on account of the vocals/lyrics aren't the best. Between Arms - Year Without Reign
The song starts off with a few taps on the cymbol followed by a guitar intro. The vocals kick in at about 0:20. The lead singer has a bit of a unique voice, but I enjoy it. The lyrics throughout the song are solid, and the occasional scream, although not incredibly strong, fits well with the song. Overall the drums, guitar, bass, and vocals seem to fit very well together. The song had quite a bit of energy, and kept me hooked the whole time. I'd definately be interested in hearing more from this band. 9/10, I definately liked it. The screams and vocals could use some improvement, but it doesn't take away from the song. I was impressed. June - OK Corral
So I chose this song because I just saw these guys live, and I thought they were pretty good, and I wanted to hear how they sound on album. I think I regret not picking up their CD while I was there now. They had such a devoted fan base at their show I had actually thought they were perhaps a lttle overrated, but they're good, I defintely respect this. Now to the song: Starts with some palm-muted guitars and vocals. The vocalist fits really well for some reason, and the harmonies they bring in are good. Neat orchestration too, very pretty and then the drums kick in and the song starts to rock. Cool sounding, lots of crescendoing/decrescendoing. It sounds cool. They have a good control of dynamics and do some cool things with the alternating vocalists. Tons of harmonies in most of it too, very neat. The break in the middle with bass is cool, though typical, and then it builds back in well from there. A lot of generic elements to it, but I didn't ever find it that boring to listen to. Very quick end to the song, and I don't think it quite fits, the control they show in the rest of the song would have better fit some fade out with harmonies I think, oh well. 9/10 The Explosion - No Revolution (Pop-Punk) Scary Kids Scaring Kids - My Darkest Hour (Pop-Punk) Open Hand - Radio Days (Indie/Pop-Punk with awesome drumming) Don't Look Down - Defined by Your Desire (Pop-Punk) Bridge to Solace - Rethink, Redefine, Revolt (Hardcore/Metalcore) |

Bridge to Solace - Rethink, Redefine, Revolt
Now, I am not the biggest fan of metalcore. Yet, there are some bands which pull it off very well. The song starts off very heavily, with palm muting straight into the full band. I heard a nice pinch harmonic, which is always awesome. The vocals aren't too deep, which I like, and I think it fits the melodic and fast pace of the music. The chorus has short bursts of music leading to more heavier bits, and I think that's a nice different section for the song. The bridge feels a bit quieter, but then quickly heads into the chorus againm only to jump into the quieter section again. It's chanting shouts and running bassline certianly seperates it from the rest of the song. The end finishes with another chorus (I think), and an impressive solo to cap off the song. It's a really good song in my opinion, with lots of grinding riffs and the right amount of shouting vocals. 8/10 from me Selection: Head Automatica - Brooklyn Is Burning (Pop-Punk/Electronica) The Bled - Hotel Coral Essex (Melodic Hardcore) Avenged Sevenfold - Beast And The Harlot (Heavy Metal) Say Anything - Belt (Indie Rock/Pop-Punk) |

Head Automatica - Brooklyn Is Burning
So the way this song starts out with a little techno beat, I didn't think it would be pop-punk at all. Then some guitar comes, and horns start to play. About 30 seconds the vox come in, pretty nice. A little tamborine tapping, and the chorus comes along. Its a very catchy chorus, cool guitar parts. Then it goes back to its techno/electronica beats. The second verse is nifty. The bridge/solo is pretty nifty. This whole song is nifty. I like it alot. I could definently listen to these guys alot. 10/10. I'm really digging it. Its very catchy. Mae - We're So Far Away
Starts with dramatic piano stuff. This sensitive guy comes in and starts singing softly, and the piano work follows suite and changes.Sounds pretty romantic, if the singer was more of a wimp it wouldn't feel out of place on a Disney movie, but as he stands he retains enough mainliness not to make me hurl. It definetly has a very uplifting feel to it, classic romance song, none of the new emo cliche stuff. Oh shi- star sound effects, could see that coming a mile of. The harmonised (I think, I dunno the term) 'ahhh-ing' is pretty effective, and fits into the whole feel of the song. The outro is pretty good also. I'd only heard 'of' this band before, and thought they were gonna be another emo-ish band, but this was something different. The crash of drums, guitar and bass at the end was uneeded though, and justrang of a band trying to asert their 'attitude' onto the listeners. Overall, a very good song, but you need to be in a certain, loved-up mood to enjoy it to the full I guess 8/10 The Luniz - I Got 5 On It (Old skool Hip-Hop) Rocket From The Crypt - Who Let the Snakes In? The Luniz - I Got 5 On It
Before even reviewing this song, I did a little research and found out it's a song about weed. Brilliant, let's get right into it then. It starts out with an electronic based intro with a nice slow beat. The occasional vocals coming on lead into the full song, with a great hip-hop beat and bassline that is catchy and emphasizes the vocals well. The rapper is good too, and has some great rhyhmes. It builds up into the chorus slowly and quietly, and it sounds really good with the occasional scratches and proper singing in the chorus. The lyrics are also pretty repetitive and make the chorus a lot more catchy with the lack of music and rapping. There isn't really much change in music, but you don't need it in a hip-hop song which focus' on the lyrics and vocals really. It's pretty catchy, and the pace of the song is really nice. 7/10. I'm not that much of a hip-hop man, but I thought that was pretty cool. Maybe a little too quiet, but I guess that sets the mood for lighting one up :thumb: Selection: The Movielife - Walking On Glass (Pop-Punk) The Fall Of Troy - Ghostship Part IV (Melodic Hardcore/Grindcore) Avenged Sevenfold - Beast And The Harlot (Heavy Metal) Say Anything - Belt (Indie Rock/Pop-Punk) |
Avenged Sevenfold - Beast and the Harlot
Pretty operatic opening, dragged out guitars and pounding drums soon make way for thumping double bass and tehe typical metal riffage. It's pretty intense, and the vocals, the 'attitude' style voice really fits the song. I'm quite supised the chorus is quite melodic, perhaps this is why so many 'emo' kids like this band. It's good though, and once again subsides for the standard metal fare, complete with virtuoso guitar solo, which is pretty impressive. This kinda reminds me of Dream Theater's 'Train of Thought' style music, if DT were more 'scene' ;) Around 3:56 it goes to a more 'stomping' part before going to the chorus, which I actually love now. Overall, I actually quite like this song, not the trash fest I expected them to be, and the song is pretty well structured. 9/10 Public Enemy - He Got Game (Old skool Hip-Hop) Rocket From The Crypt - Who Let the Snakes In? Manic Street Preachers -Ifwhiteamericatoldthetruthforonedayit'sworldwouldfallapart
I've heard this band already, but only from a couple of songs (My dad was a big fan of them). This song starts out with a radio-style announcement, which rushes into the song after about 20 seconds. The song has a rolling drum beat and a James Bond-esque style guitar melody. It sounds really cool and funky, and the vocals sound good over the gritty style of music. The chorus keeps with the rolling drums, and the music gets a bit more cheerier. The vocals also get a little higher, and I think this gives the song a bit of variety and it sounds really cool. Another verse passes by, and then it heads into the bridge (I think, it might be another verse). Anyway, there's a nice little high lick in the background which you can just hear. That would be nice if it was a little louder, but it doesn't matter. The bridge quickly bursts into a really cool sounding effect on the guitar, into a mini solo, and that sounds fucking sweet if you ask me. There's a short riff and vocals at the end too, but this lasts about 20 seconds, and then fades out. Brilliant song for me. It is Brit-Rock to be fair, but it's awesome Brit-Rock. No poncy Hundred Reasons style, this is full on rock, and it's done brilliantly. The addition of the superb effects on guitar just adds to it's easy listenabilty and structure. 9/10, certianly a band I could get behind (Are they broken up now? I'm sure they are). Selection coming up soon |
