When Dreams And Day Unite is their first cd, which dosen't feature James Labrie but is still a powerful album with some great songs (YTES Jam) Images has more of their 80's style in their, but has some very good songs (Learning To Live, Take The Time, Metropolis), A Change Of Seasons is basically 1 song and a whole bunch of covers, but the titled track is all you really need, an epic 23 minute masterpiece is well worth it. Awake is going back to their early roots but is a great album with some unforgettable songs (Lie, Erotomania, Caught In A Web). Scenes From A Memory..Basically the best concept album i've ever seen, This cd is a MUST BUY for anyone, regardless if your a DT fan or not, Some great songs are (Dance Of Eternity, Finally Free, Home, Overture 1928). Six Degrees Of Inner Turbluence is where i think they got the most technical and stepped it up in the heaviness and with a 42 minute EPIC piece on the second cd which is absolutely orgasmic :)
Id well suggest it to anyone, some great songs (The Glass Prison, The Great Debate, Blind Faith, And the whole Six Degree's Of Inner Turbluence Piece itself. Train Of Thought..Undisputed, the most heavy album from Dream Theater and all the songs are very catchy, Some very good solo'ing on this cd even though lots of people disagree, some good songs (As I Am, This Dying Soul, In The Name Of God)
have you learned YTSE jam, im learning it right now and have questions
have you learned YTSE jam, im learning it right now and have questions
I know some of it, Haven't really taken the time to learn it. Killer song though :thumb:

zero_ 01-06-2005 01:58 AM
I've recently started to try out DT, but so far the songs i've got are all softer, balladlike or acoustic songs. That's great and all, but i'd like some heavier stuff.

Any suggestions?
Beyond this life (live version has some really awesome solos, I recommend it as well as the studio version)
As I am
Glass prison
Honor thy father
The mirror
Pull me under

Dream Theater isn't really a hard band, but when they do play hard, they do it well.

Also get these songs:
This Dying Soul
Endless Sacrifice
The Dance Of Eternity
War Inside My Head
In The Name Of God
The Test That Stumped Them all
The Great Debate
Beyond This Life(Live at Budokan, Their interlude is just astounding in it)
Home
Lie
Hells Kitchen
Also get Paradigm Shift from Liquid Tension Experiment :thumb:
Anyone else find the intro to Dissapear kinda creepy?
Very haunting indeed, also the way James sings some of the vocals sends shivers down my spine like " So I'm moving on, I'll never forget as you laid there and watched me. I gave you my hand, I sais its okay, letting go, its time to leave here. And I'll carry on, the best that I can withoutyou here beside me, let Him come take you home." And that little bit of piano comes in with the intro repeade and it fades out, just as I said before, its a very haunting tune, same with Space Dye Vest from Awake.

Raijo 01-07-2005 08:50 PM

I didn't find Disappear creepy, more like really melancholic and depressing.

ytsedrummer 01-07-2005 08:55 PM

That's because its about James LaBrie's mother's passing I believe.

The Dance Of Instrumentals is particularly good, if it's still available. If not, I got it on my computer for anyone who wants it.

You go to a concert, hold up a camera and get better quality then.

Quebec 01-09-2005 06:02 PM

Everybody, just a short post to remind you that DT's correct spelling is Dream Theater, NOT Dream Theatre. We've been seeing this mistake too much. Here's the proof: http://www.dtfaq.com/category/?categoryid=17#67

If the link doesn't work, read this:
What's with Fatez Warning in the IAW liners?

This is a joke regarding a misprint in the liners of Fates Warning's Parallels. In the liners, they thank "Dream Theatre", a commonly made spelling mistake which Dream Theater hates.
Okey dokey, on www.mikeportnoy.com, there's a poll about weather the next album should be 60 minutes or 80 minutes. Personally I say it should be filled to the MAX... the more the merrier. So what are your thoughts?

The JoZ 01-09-2005 06:35 PM

Where was it? I couldn't find it.

My vote would go to 80 mins though.

I say 80min, but I can't find the poll!

^Dream~Theater^ 01-10-2005 04:51 PM

I couldn't find it either:( But who's really gonna vote for 60 mins when it's a dream theater cd? There's no need for the poll.

^Dream~Theater^ 01-14-2005 08:41 PM

John Petrucci's solo album is almost out. I seen the album cover and the list of tracks. Just a matter of the release date now.

do DT make video clips for their songs........vid clips owuld b absoltely awesome...even if their clips owuld just b watching them playing, they are all so talented that just clips of them performing would be enough!

stoned_rat 01-18-2005 07:56 AM

also which of their songs have good guitar solos....or whichs ogns hsow off some of his good guitar talent....coz hes an awesom eguitarist

Otherside 01-18-2005 08:53 AM

stream of conciousness. that's one of his fastest, and watching him on the budokan dvd playing the sweeps near the end of the first part is just amazing, you just see his fingers blur about all over the place without missing a single not. the in the name of god legato unison is also pretty fast, and the this dying out outro unison, 16th notes at 200bpm played perfectly in unison with JR. just buy train of thought if you want fast stuff basically. not all his best solos, but probably his fastest.

You left out the Hollow Years solo on the dvd.

How about the Improv section on Beyond This Life? In The Name Of God's Solo? Trail Of Tears solo? There's way greater than the hollow years solo.

Faster maybe, but the Hollow Years solo has emotion

pizzapie88 01-18-2005 04:07 PM

Is Metropolos Pt2 worth buying for my first DT CD? It's only 20 New Zealand Dollars at my local CD store. Or should I pay a bit more and go for another DT CD first?

SFAM is my favourite so I say yeah, definately. It's a great concept album.

Screw all you people who say he has no emotion when he plays, You have no idea what's running through Petrucci's head so don't act like you do.

MAthiAS 01-18-2005 06:26 PM

Do you guys think DT sold out on FII? I just got this one, along with When Dream And Day Unite. I'd say if they'd continued in that direction with 7DOIT, then yes, but since they didn't, then no.

I never said he didn't have any emotion in his solos. I merely pointed out the raw emotion he does have during the Hollow Years solo.

Don't go throwing hissy fit over a difference of opinions.

pseudokudo 01-18-2005 06:42 PM

I've been listening to DT for about 8 - 9 years now. my first album was Awake. what a great album. been a huge fan since and think all players in the band are absolutely amazing. i went and seen them everytime they came to town and enjoyed every second. i've noticed in recent times between 6 degrees and train of thought i started to stray from them. the creativity of the music has declined a hair, but that's just my opinion. maybe DT meant for that to be? take it a little back to the roots. definetly fun stuff though. the addition of Jordan Rudess on keys brings some pretty crazy elements musically and in the live show. what a great player. who ever said they were warned to stay away from Falling into Infinity, don't be worried. it's a good album thats fun to sing along to. has some really nice tracks on it. DT rules! I would love to see Kevin on keys again sometime.

You didn't revive this thread, I did. Some easy songs on guitar would be Strange Deja Vu, Honor Thy Father, Stream Of Consciousness, Pull me under.

I could be a good album to start, but only if you're comfortable with concept album. Maybe you should buy awake or 6DOIT but if starting with a concept album doesn't bother you, yes its a good start. It's a really good album.
