The Who - Substitute
'K, starts up with a nice guitar intro with a conic sense in it. Not after long, the lines "You think we look really good together/You think my shoes are made of leather", and you understand that this song is a one big joke... Well, not exactly, but it's pretty comic anyways. The bass, drums and guitars are going well together, and are serving only as a background to the vocals. Generally, there's not much to say anymore - nice background music, pretty nice bridge with the bass there between the pre-chorus and the chorus, verse, chorus again, end of song. Nice guitar riffs, nice bass and drums fills. That's all for this song. Although it's really not my type, I enjoyed the song pretty much... :) I'd give it an 8/10, but just because I listened to Nirvana after this, and it made me wonder how I could listen to this old-school country music... Still, I enjoyed the song pretty much. ------------- Soilwork - Distortion Sleep[Melodic Death Metal] Orphaned Land - The Kiss Of Babylon[Death Metal] Orphaned Land - The Beloved's Cry[Doom Metal] Crematory - Eyes Of Suffering[Melodic Death Metal(I suppose, not sure)] W.A.S.P - Helion[Hard Rock] Alice Cooper - The Black Widow[Hard Rock] Alice Cooper - Welcome To My Nightmare[Hard Rock] Helloween - Hocus Pocus[Instrumental, Heavy Metal] |

Orphaned Land - The Belvoved's Cry
Never heard of this band before, so I don't know what to expect (except Doom Metal). So, here goes... Wind and waves set the atmosphere. Nice acoustic intro, haunting, chilling effect. Keyboard in the background. Low vocals, slow, dreamy but all the while dark. This is quite a sad song. A sort of hint at hope in the singers voice. Female backing vocals add an even more haunting quality to the song. It's getting a bit repetitive now, and I'm losing interest waiting for the metal bit. Nice acoustic work though. The male/female vocals have doubled up now. Piano part now. Guitar solo. Nothing new, but it fits the mood of the song. The vocals are singing over the solo now, the piano plays a sad tune and the song fades away. I realise that there is no metal bit. I think that it's about the loss of a loved one and the person left behind contemplating giving up/suicide (correct me if I'm wrong). Wouldn't have said it was doom metal, as it seemed to be severly lacking in the metal department. That said, it was a very sad emotional song and was put together well. The acoustic work was very good, the singers voice suitably sultry and a fitting solo to end it. All in all 8/10. :thumb: Would I listen to more of the band? Yes, to see if there is a metal side to them. My songs: The Dillinger Escape Plan - Pig Latin (Math-metal with Mike Patton as the vocalist) God Forbid - Antihero (New Death Metal, with cool solos) |

I've avoided these guys so far, though I've heard good things about them. Actually, it was because I'd heard so many good things that I avoided them - one article I read praised them so horribly and completely it made me hate the band.
God Forbid - Antihero - 3:57 Starts off with a fairly impressive thrashy riff..and carries on like that, really. Up to 0:35, it's high-class, heavy metal/thrash goodness, I like it. At 0:35 however, the vocals come in, and I'm less impressed. They're not especially bad, but they sound too much like those of a lot of other "NWOAHM" bands that have come out recently; Chimaira, Shadow's Fall, etc. They're just not that great, and what's worse, the guitars aren't playing anywhere near as well when the guy is singing. Still, at 1:04, the vocals stop, and we get another display of reasonably impressive guitar play, with a mini-solo, if only for 10 seconds. A good, longer, instrumental part, with nice solos, from about 2:15 til 3:02. Vocals come back in, and continue right through to the end. I'd say it was good guitar, reduced in greatness by what struck me as mediocre songwriting, and the other three elements of the band (vocals, bass, drums) being not so good. I didn't detect a hint of death metal, either. 5/10 Would I listen to more of the same band? I'm not in any hurry too, but they're good enough to fill an afternoon if ever I'm stuck for something to listen to. Cult of luna - Circle
Strummed acoustic chords with another guitar coming in playing a solo of sorts. Gets a bit boring after a while as there seems to be no change in it. Aha! Some heavier louder chords! The song is getting going now, still with a slow, stomping pace to it. Sense of impending doom. Nice chord progression. Break in it with a synth build up then BANG!!! The heavy choirds come in and a lovely charming sounding man begins to scream. This is pretty **** cool. Still has that nice downtrodden feel to it. A sort of pent up release of agression. I like the singer, he's hacked off about something. Cant tell what it is he's saying but I can get the general idea. I think this is the chorus now, really agressive, cathartic feel to it, like the vocalist is letting go. I believe he means what he says. This is really pretty good and makes me feel good in a strange masochistic kind of way. There is one last distorted chord which fades away to reveal the acopustic intro chords and the solo. The chords too leave and only the sad, sad solo remains. Overall: Wow! I really liked that. Kind of a soundtrack to the apocalypse if ever there was one. The fact that this song is 8:10 could have meant it dragged on in places, and if I'm honest I think that the intro could have been a bit shorter but hey! What do I know??? When the distortion kicked in the song changed from sad to cathartic - a good song to vent off agression to. 9.5/10, only the length of the intro prevents it from getting the full whack Would I listen to more of this band? 9.5/10, hmm lets think about this... (that means yes) :thumb: My songs... Khanate - Skin Coat
Song starts off extremely slow and sludgey with screams. It sounds like the guitarist is just improvising right now. At about 2:10 the guitar riff changes to a very riff with the drums very little drums in the background. At about 3:10 the guitars seem to go back to improvisation (atleast that's what it sounds like) At about 4:10 the song picks up a little speed with a guitar riff that is a little faster along with more consistant drumming. At about 5:10, there is a clean part which sounds like nothing really, soon the drums enter along with vocals. The vocalist is talking about staying warm in his skin coat. This part is extremely boring. At 7:21 the clean riff becomes distorted, the drums and the vocals stay the same though. At 9:05 the song takes a turn to the weird with just drums, they use a swell effect up until the song fades out on this. This song gets a 2/10. It seems that it was just improvised with the exception of a few measures. The only plus about it was, the vocalist sounded like Golem (from the Lord of the Rings :p ) Songs.... Vintersorg - A Dialoge with the stars or Om RegnbÄgen Materialiserades (Folk progressive black metal-ish) Arcturus - Fall of Man (Symphonic black metal) Sinners Bleed - The Ludo Game (Technical Death Metal) Necrophagist - Only Ash Remains (Technical Death Metal) |

To per ardua ad astra, i dont really like that song either! It just struck me as so weird i wanted to see what other people thought of it.
:thumb: |
I'm rather looking forward to hearing this, as I've heard comparisons to Necrophagist, who is/are awesome.
Sinners Bleed - The Ludo Game - 3:57 Kicks off straight away with heavy riffing and fairly quick drumming, and a nice, deep, vocal roar. Good - the vocals don't sound pathetic. The foundations for a decent death metal band are set. Pretty soon (around 0:15) there's a really good section of riffing, and the drummer throws in impressive fills where appropriate. The vocals come back in around 0:40, and they're not only not pathetic - they're actually pretty good. He can not only do long roars (another of which he does to introduce the first verse), but can carry on the barking, growling vocals for the verse itself. Around 1:40, I think the riff changes for a few seconds, and I'm pretty sure I made out the bass showing through for a couple of notes. 2:14, a solo starts in one channel, and at 2:24 plays through the other channel. It's not blisteringly fast, but it's impressive. Oh wait, now it's blisteringly fast, and switches from one channel to the other and back once more. Around 3:10, the vocalist comes back in, and the whole bands goes into full-on brutal mode for the end of the song. Overall, very impressive..but it's not Necrophagist :) 8/10 Would I listen to more of the same band? Yep. Just a note to the crazy-guy -who-is-not-ashamed-of-it: You were right about the part where you said the song was about losing a beloved person. About "If there is a metal side to them" - Hell yes, and if you download the other song I posted here, you'd find it very death-metal-ic, as I mentioned. Bassically, they are one of my favorite bands, and I love them for the combination of death and doom metal they make, and for the fact they are israeli, which makes me feel really proud, being one too. I am very happy you liked them, and I hope some more people would start to know them and listen to them, because from all the bands in the metal industry nowadays, they are ones of the most deserving ones.

Devin Townsend - Stagnant
What the hell? I was expecting something really crushingly heavy, but I get almost a Bon Jovi song! He's got a great voice, but the music is pretty bad. The whole song is focused on the vocals, the background music is pretty poor, there is nothing special anywhere, it is all chord progressions. The only highlight of the whole song, in my opinion, is his great, strong voice, which is probably what the band is all about. I've never heard Strapping Young Lad before, so I don't really know if it is any different. The guitar solo near end is pretty good, but I will stay away from this guy's solo work. If you like Bon Jovi, check it out, I reckon. 4/10. -------- Lykathea Aflame - Land Where Sympathy is Air (Technical Death/Grind) Coroner - Suicide Command (Technical Thrash) Meshuggah - Future Breed Machine (Technical Metal) Yeah i like technical stuff. |
Strapping Young Lad is much heavier than his solo work
|
Stagnant probably wasn't the best song to recommend anyway. Most of the really good ones are over the 6 minute mark though.
Bump, can't find either of the two I haven't heard. |
I'll dibs, although I'm not that deep into technical stuff... :)

Meshuggah - Future Breed Machine
The only song I found, although it was the lowest on my priorities-list... And I should say - My intuition proved to be more trustfull than ever before. Intro - some machines working or something, then the guitars drop in, although only 2 chords strummed all over, along with some beeping BG noise... Nothing amusing, but not that terrible either... Some kind of bridge where two guitars play... Then the drums drop in. Torture to my ears! It sounds asif the drummer strikes random drums in random order over and over... Then the vocals enters - terrible, incomprehensible screaming... Never heared a better example for the definition "Dick in the throat". Chorus - you can distinguish it from the rest of the song only by the different way of screaming... The guitars and drums are on their own... Asif noone of the band members hears what the others are doing... Still screaming... Then comes some acoustic part that I like, even do like, but goes away immediately... :upset: Then some other guitars, though not as terrible as the rest of the song... But well, as expected, doesn't last too long either... ****ty power chord repeated over and over... As if that's the only thing that the guitarist is able to play, but here, comes in some shredding - ****ty tremolo-picking, again, the same notes all over the place... OOOOH! Again! ****ty screaming, incomprehensible combination of whatever there is in the room - I bet they were beating on the tables and used the mic-stand as one of the drumsticks! It seems the guitarists decided to try out a new picking technique - "Feet Picking" - That is, jumping on the guitar which lies on the floor over and over... Sarcasm aside, The sound is TERRIBLE! The song goes away suddenly, and the relief of Symphony X which was next on my playlist comes to my tortured head! Thank fate it did stand there... Score: I would give it a -2/10, if not the acoustic part, and the shredding, so 1/10. Would I listen to them again? Maby in hell, being tortured to the rest of my etrnal, miserable stay there... But that is, only through my dead body - You'll need to kill me first! My suggestions: Symphony X - Awakening[Progressive Metal] Axxis - When The Sun Is Going Down[Heavy/Progressive Metal] Dark Funeral - The Arrival Of Satan's Empire[Black Metal](Frankly not the best of my liking, but not bad...) Grave Digger - The Grave Digger[Can't say, decide yourselves, and tell me.] Megadeth - A Tout Le Monde[Thrash Metal](I guess everyone have heared that one... Still, I love this song...) Gamma Ray - Heaven or Hell[Power Metal] Sorry for puting only too famous songs/artists... I'm just having tons of each... |
Megadeth - A Tout Le Monde
------------------------------------------ Wow...I love the way it just starts out, and I love the slow intro, kinda reminds me of Cemetary Gates. I love when it kicks in! Im a Megadeth fan and i've never heard this song, im loving it. It's very melodic I love the guitar! Nice solo to... My Score: 3.5/5 Not the best Megadeth song but its a good one. My suggestion: Take The Reins - Tsunami Bomb |
Bump. Should we count that?

It was short and undescriptive, but if anyone wants to do jet black stare's suggestion, i guess they could.
This is not a dibs, as i'm extremely tired. |

|
Aw... Meshuggah aren't that bad.
|
I don't like Meshuggah either, but I'd agree they're not a 1/10. Especially not FBM.
I wanted to do that Axxis song, but couldn't find it anywhere. Anyway, I haven't heard any Dark Funeral before. Dark Funeral - The Arrival of Satan's Empire - 4:22 Starts off with some strangely toned guitar, and a few drum blasts, before a decently long scream. The vocals are pretty much full on, I like them, the guy seems to be putting his all into them. The drumming is fairly fast, but nothing fancy. I like the main riff of the song, but again it's nothing spectacular. At around 2:45 (like, 15 seconds), the guys vocals stop for a while, and we can concentrate on the music a little bit, but nothing changes, which is strange. There's a very short space with some impressive drum fills at the very end, before the songs comes to to a sudden stop. All in all, a decent black metal song. Absolutely no variation in the music, which was a bit annoying, but the vocals were somewhat above average. 6.5/10 Nothing particularly wrong with it, except that it seems to fit very well into the "yes yes, very good, but what's the fucking point?"-niche. Would I listen to more of the same band? Not at the top of my list, but maybe in the future. Songs: Arghoslent - The Purging Fires of War (melodic death metal) Mannhai - Spender (stoner rock) Ben Harper - When it's Good (blues/jam) Blues Traveler - Optimistic Thought (blues/rock) Winds - What is Beauty? (symphonic metal, plenty of strings) Circle Takes the Square - In the Nervous Light of Sunday (emocore/screamo) Farmakon - Loosely of Amoebas (Gothenburg melodic death, with a bit of a twist) |
Not dibs, but Dark Funeral did an awesome cover of Mayhem's 'Pagan Fears'. It's way better than the original, I reckon.
