Pretty much no experience of this band before.
Wumpscut - Black Death (french concept) - 5:50 Starts off with what I think is a synth tone, then what sounds like someone hitting a mic, and a loop of a quarter second of speech, is played over a woman speaking French. 0:53 it gets dense and close, with menacing vocals - reminds me somewhat of VNV Nation (an industrial band). Around 1:00 it goes loud, and heavy, sounds like another form of industrial. The mechanical riffing is fairly fast-paced. Then it goes back to the synth and female French, before what I think are German vocals, and a lower synth tone, lead back into the dense, claustrophobic heavy industrial riffing. It pretty much continues in this way, going from the soft, female vocalled French w/synth to the dense riffage, sometimes adding extra or removing surplus tones and sounds from the quiet part. Often the German vocals lead the one into the other. Near to the end, we get English, male vocals during a quiet bit, before a sample leads back into a final, even more chaotic heavy part to finish on. Well, that was excellent. It's a fairly intense song; the contrast works well, and the dense industrial sections remind me of another band I'm listening to at the moment called Axis of Perdition (though Axis.. have black metal influence as well). 9/10 Bruford - Five G (Jazz/fusion) Xavier Rudd - 9 Times a Day (I know it's already been done, but it must be heard more :)) Circle Takes the Square - Crowquill (emo-core/"screamo" - available here, lyrics here) |

Bruford - Five G
Funky slap bass intro with hi hats. Then guitar joins and does a run-up riff a few times. I think I heard horns in there somehwere too. Then a keyboard joins and its rather spazzy. At 1:20 the music changes, going more melodic for a bit, theres a guitar solo. Then back to the run up riffs, though maybe a bit different this time, the guitar solo comes back over this. It just keeps going and changing and guitar soloing, I think I lost interest in it because I'm 2:30 into the next song on the playlist and didn't really notice... not a good sign. It reminds me of Gordian Knot - Code Anticode just without the crunch of distortion, and a bit more jazziness. The intstruments music is pretty technical in execution except probably the drums. 6/10 It's technical, unusual, and all that comes with jazz/fusion, but very little in the interesting factor for me. It just faded out without any climax or conclusion or anything.. __________________________ John Butler Trio - big live songs thing explained in detail at the end of this post: http://www.musicianforums.com/forums/showpost.php?p=3633185&postcount=220 Battles - Tras 2 - blippy math rock Zero Hour - Stratagem - progressive power metal, for fans of weird time sigs. 8 minutes long |

Zero Hour - Stratagem - 8:04
I had written a longer review but my pc crashed and I lost it :upset: I've never heard of this band before and I was very intrigued by the progressive power metal title. The song begins with a very cool bass riff. The guitars slowly build up from underneath the bass and at 0:26 when it all starts to kick off. The guitar and bass then play the same riff in unison although with a few alterations everynow and then. At 1:10 the song changes pace into a heavier section. At 1:33 a very techincal sounding bass riff is played. Spoken word vocals enter at 2:17 over cleanly played guitar. The vocals properly start at 2:43 I enjoy the singer although he isn't anything special, it is a pretty generic power metal vocalist. The song continues along in pretty much the same vain for a couple of minutes. At 4:49 the song changes pace again to a clean guitar and some backing vocals or synth's i'm not quite sure. The singing re enters at 5:18 I really like this part its one of favourite parts of the song. At 5:52 the distorted guitars come back into the mix. The song carries on in this vain for the rest of the song. Overall I really enjoyed the song. Alot of the bass reminded me alot of cynic in a few places. Overall I highly recommend this song for anyone who enjoys techincal or progressive metal. 8.5/10 My Recommendations Axis Of Perdition - To Walk The Corridors Of Hell ( Techno/Industrial Black metal) Damien Rice - Cannonball (Acoustic) Spastic Ink - Aquanet (Techincal/Progressive metal, 8 minutes long) Any problems just grab me on peter_alcock@hotmail.com and I can send it you :) |

Axis Of Perdition - To Walk The Corridors Of Hell
I'm only slightly familiar with black metal, but I know it's general sound and I'm not much of a liker of it. The intro doesnt sound too bad, guitar with AUDIBLE DRUMS :O featuring some double bass machine guns. Now the vocalist (plural?) comes in growling something in all capital letters, still it's not too overpowering vs the other instruments. I can see the spectrum analyzer bands on winamp peaking at nearly every frequency. I can hear it too, but that's the black metal for you. I'm completely lost and have no clue what's happened, but its a hell of a lot faster than before and there's a tapping guitar solo now. Slowed down again, theres a relatively quiet bit here, I actually could make out some of the lyrics, only because it's the song title. It fades out from whatever is going on at 5:30 or so and some noisy fan blade electronic feedback solo finishes the track, probably the intro to the next one. This is a disgusting thing to listen to due to the noise of the recording and the noise of the vocals, but some interesting guitar bits shine through every now and then. Near impossible to follow, and I don't think I have the patience to get used to it either. Despite saying all that, it wasn't that bad actually, it just seemed 'right' for some reason. The one thing that surprised me was even though the recording was typicaly BM distorted, the instruments were balanced and the guitar was not the only thing right in your face. 5/10 - I guess you need to be a BM fan to enjoy this kind of thing. ____________________ Substitute Inc. - The Chase - Scene 3 and 4 (one song spread over two tracks) - underwater progressive trippy-disco sci-fi rock (get it from me, Blueser57 on soulseek, Quick, while I'm still on, I seriously doubt anyone else has this) John Butler Trio - live songs thing details at the end of this post: http://www.musicianforums.com/forums/showpost.php?p=3633185&postcount=220 Battles - Tras 2 - blippy math rock Cog - Moshiach - aboriginal tinged heavy rock (the singer is also the guitarist, and both parts aren't easy to do at once) either version is fine - 5:32 or 6:43 |

Battles - Tras 2 - 5:50
Starts off with what I can only describe as weird noises. It might be a very distorter/altered guitar picking. I think I hear a bassline in the background. 20 seconds in; I give up on the play-by-play approach, I don't think it's going to work. This is just strange. It's a mass of what could just as easily be electronically produced sounds as actual instruments. That said, it's not just a morass of these sounds, it has some structure, and follows a main melody the whole way through. Theremain elements seem to be picked guitar, which is pretty good, and what could be bass in the background. I'm not noticing the bass sounds as much now (about 3:30) as at the start of the song. There's also drums, which sound physical (rather than programmed), and sound like they could have a tambourine on them, as each strike also makes a jangly tambourine noise. Might be a cymbal though. From about 4:00 onwards, it's just drums, playing more or less the same rhythm, with a little variation now and then. Surprisingly it's not that bad to listen to, I quite like it. Towards the end I think I can make out the sound of a record coming to an end on a player. The rhythm gets less and less varied until it's pretty much a single repeated drum beat, and then just that cymbal/tambourine noise repeated over and over, until it finishes. That reminded me of the first time I heard Tetra-sync, though without the same "wow" effect. 8/10. In the end, surprisingly good, and recommended. Would I listen to more of the same band? Based on that song, yes, but I think I've seen blue say that it's their only decent one. Michael Bublé - Crazy little thing Called Love
It starts off with some great drumming, and piano playing. It al flows fabulously. The singers voice then comes in. He has a good voice, reminds me of Dean Martin or someone else from The Rat Pack. The love the Swing feel, and the brass instruments that break into the mix. A great guitar solo is thrown out quite rapidly. Brian Setzer like. And following the solo, the bass lines start getting very noticable. And the drummer is given openings to do fills, which he exectues perfectly. 10/10 Great song. I love Swing. Fabulous rythm aswell as vocals. -------------------------------------------------------------------- The String Cheese Incident - No woman No Cry (live cover) (Reggae/Bluegrass) Blues Traveler - Optimistic Thought (recorded) (Blues rock) Phish - Farmhouse (recorded) (Rock) The Grateful Dead - Sugar Magnolia (recorded) (Psychedelish Rock) The Allman Brothers - Rambling Man (recorded) (Bluegrassish Rock) |

Very cool, simple, Dead song. I've never really got into them, but I might check them out some more. I like that country rock vibe they have going. Sounds a lot like the Allman Bros. 9/10 Song: Jedi Mind Tricks- I against I |
I found the rest of EP C quite annoying, Tras 2 was the first song I heard and the only one I really listen to from it. Apparently they have another cd out but I never knew that until looking them up again right now, and I still might check it out. Btw, John Stainer is the drummer. |
John Stainer?
Blues Traveler - Optimistic Thought - 3:30 Starts off mid-paced and happy, with quite a few instruments - definitely guitars, drums and bass, and what could be many things - a whistle, or a stringed instrument, or a flute, harmonica. I really like the guitar in the verse, I love that adept, fairly fast-paced picking/strumming. The vocalist is really good as well. His accent is addictive, and he's got a good rhythm going in the verses. Around 1:47, the harmonica/flute/whatever goes off on a solo, which is pretty cool, and is followed immediately by a solo on electric guitar, which I can relate to more easily. 2:20, the vocals come back in, and they're even better! Great voice, and he knows how to use it to stress different points of the line. Most instruments (except drums) cut out for an awesome vocal part, singing about embracing life - definitely lives up to it's title. Then there's none-lyrical vocals to lead out on. 9/10 Another awesome song. I hope badmoon and joshmay keep recommending stuff like this, I've been missing out :( Would I listen to more of the same band? Yup. This is my more in depth version, though the song was very basic and there really wasn't that much to say about it.
Grateful Dead- Sugar Magnolias Very cool, simple, Dead song. I've never really got into them, but I might check them out some more. I like that country rock vibe they have going. Sounds a lot like the Allman Bros. Edit: Fine. It starts off kind of reminesent of Brewer & Shipley's "One toke over the Line." The chord changes are typical Dead/Southern Rock. It doesn't really change that much throughout the song, it has several solo sections in it, but they are kind of repetitive noodling stuff that jam bands are often plagued with. It kind of reminds me of the Freebird solo, because the solos in this song mainly consist of five or less notes. Just penatonic solos, nothing too inventive. Now that I realize it, this song is not a nine, it more like a seven. It gets boring, but it is good for what it is 7/10 Song: Jedi Mind Tricks- I against I |
Dibs, I'll do one from both of your lists.

Jedi Mind Tricks - I Against I
The song opend with some organ playing, and possibly some background bass playing. The rapping then comes in with the drumming. The beat is rather nice, with some good timing. The rapping is good, but I could really rate it becauseI can't rate rapping. The simple, and smooth background playing matches great with the rappers. I also believe there is some flute (Or something) playing in the background at certain times. The rappers switch over time, which gives the song some variety. I couldn't tell you how many different rappers there are exactly, but I think three. The track is okay. 6.5/10 The Pogues - Rocky Road to Dublin The track opens with some great viloin playing. The vocals soon come, they're obviously from Ireland. And their voices obviously have the accent, which occasionally gets annoying, but is nice. I like the drumming, rather simple though. And the wide varety of instruments keeps me interested. t's slightly surprising to hear an electric guitar in the mix. For obviously reason. A little more than half way in, each musician changes the tempo up, and starts a...breakdown, I guess. I liked the song. I never really listed to any other Folk than America. Good stuff. 7.5/10 --------------------------------------------------------------------- The String cheese Incident - No Woman No Cry (Reggae/Bluegrass) (Live Cover) The Allman Brothers - Rambling Man (Blues Rock) Phish - Reba (Other; Rather long, you can stop reviewing after the vocals, and when the guitar solo starts) The Grateful Dead - Cumberland Blues (Bluegrass) |
Phish - Reba
I've heard this once or twice, about 4-5 months ago, then forgot about it. So I couldn't remember it at all really. So anyway. This is a great song. There's about a 2:30 actual 'song' as such, and the rest is basically a huge jam. The first bit is humerous, but really nothing to get excited about. It's pretty catchy, and has all these weird time signature changes, which makes it cool. The drums are good as well. I like the bass tone as well. And the descending bit at about 1:02 is splendid. Then, after a chorus, the jam begins. This is pretty awesome. Great background music, and it is engaging enough to sit and listen to all the way through. There are changing phrases throughout the entire song, but the guitar (I don;'t know his name) is basically soloing throughout. The drum solo (about 6:30) is awesome, though. It seems to be all premeditated, because the phrasing is far too good to be made on the spot (or perhaps, they were just superb musicians) it mellows out after the drum solo for a while, which is probably my favourite part of the jam. After it has all finished, there is this cool whistle bit, which is my favourite part of the song - the drums make it even better. And there is a cool little harmony. After that, there is a couple of choruses, and then the mammoth song ends. Excellent song, which I recommend to everyone. 10/10. ------- Lykathea Aflame - Land Where Sympathy is Air (Technical Death/Grind) A Perfect Circle - 3 Libras (Prog rock, I suppose. A Perfect Circle - "3 Libras" 03:35
This is the first time I have herd this song.
The intro of the song is great with the acoustics and strings (Awsome sound). The bass line in this song is very catchy aswell. This song is great for those times when you have a lot of things on ya mind, its a great song to just sit back and relax and take the whole song in. The chorus is very powerful in this song. I must admitt I have not herd much of A Perfect Circle but I really like this song, I think it is excellent and all people here should listen to it, I reakon most people in thease forums will enjoy it. My final rating is excellent 5/5 :thumb: The songs I recomend are: John Butler Trio - "What You want" (Folk rock Aussie band) Radiohead - "Pyramid Song" (Soft Rock) Ben Harper - "Like A King" (Folk/Rock/Reggee) Peace Beaze |

Okay, sorry this took so long, but I was determined to get this one song rather than either of the others.
I absolutely loved the last Ben Harper song I heard, so I've got high hopes. Ben Harper - Like a King (I'll Rise) - 10:03 Okay, for a ten minute song I'm not doing a play-by-play. His voice isn't as high (most of the time) as it is on When it's Good, but he's got a great voice, so I think it'll sound good no matter how he uses it. The whole song seems to be Harper and an acoustic guitar. This is absolutely no bad thing, as his way of playing the guitar (really quick, adept picking/strumming - anyone tell me it's proper name?) is fast becoming a favourite of mine. It's totally excellent. His playing basically follows the mood of the song - if he is singing, it is generally low-key and melancholy (the lyrics are fairly bitter and unhappy, but I like them); there is just the occasional quiet guitar to back it up. This is punctuated by bursts of captivating, manic playing, such as there is for about 2 minutes towards the start of the song. The last four minutes or so (from 4-8) have been focused on his singing - I'm really drawn in, captivated, it's amazing. I'm usually more susceptible to instruments than beautiful vocals..but this is, well, beautiful. No other description for it. Oh wait, 8:35 or so and the song stops, and a crowd applauds. Guess that was a live version. The last minute and a half is applause, and thanks from Ben. 10/10, no question. Songs: The Pogues - Streets of Sorrow/Birmingham Six or Medley - The Recruiting Sergeant/Rocky Road to Dublin/Galway Races (Irish folk) Michael Bublé - For Once In My Life (Swing) Devin Townsend - Stagnant or Down and Under |
