Has anyone heard the Sydney band Tourettes? I saw them at the BDO and i thought they were pretty awesome. They have a female singer and my god she can sing/scream/growl really well.

Captain Quentin 03-12-2006 03:11 AM
The Red Paintings are fantastic from what I leeched from a Forced Listening thread and got from their website, thanks for these uploads.

I could try and do a Crowded House post but I bet everyone already knows them.

/hopes this post isn't against the rules
crowded house aren't aussie you idiot, they're New Zealanders

great band though :thumb:

Riva 03-12-2006 03:55 AM

We always steal their bands though, hehe. But Split Enz > Crowded House.

Captain Quentin 03-12-2006 05:52 PM

lol so true, i haven't heard much of split endz but neil finn is a genius

Jim 03-13-2006 01:54 AM

123. Who else could spend six months in a leaky boat and live to tell the tale?
123. Who else could spend six months in a leaky boat and live to tell the tale?
Little Birdy?

Jim 03-13-2006 02:06 AM

Yeah, but they didn't really I bet.

blueyxd 03-13-2006 02:08 AM

It was the name of one of their songs or cds.

Jim 03-13-2006 02:11 AM

Which was a Split Enz cover!

Rage4ever 03-19-2006 05:16 PM

Anyone heard of the Aussie band "Wolfmother" they are really good, they sound like the White Stripes, but more rockish, i suggest you try them out. They have a song that is played on IMF channel called Minds eye

dUSK 03-19-2006 11:12 PM

Wolfmother are really well known around these parts. :)

They are currently doing a US/European tour I think.

Apocalyptic Raids 03-20-2006 01:44 AM

Yeah, Wolfmother are very popular here.

I still haven't heard them. I can't be bothered :(

Turbojugend 03-22-2006 03:35 AM

The Datsuns, anyone? Just made a thread about them actually.

www.thedatsuns.com

Werny 03-22-2006 07:53 AM

When my friend got an iRiver, he went to his uncle and got stacks of music from him.

So he comes to school one day and says "I've got the funniest band... but they suck so much. They're stupid as". "Who are they?" I says, and he replies "Blood Duster". He shows me them and I couldn't stop laughing for ages, here's a mid-paced grindcore band with a southern-rock leaning growling about rubbing his fat one in a porn store!

They began in 1991 largely inspired by the early grindcore of Carcass and Napalm Death. They got signed to the Dr. Jim's label in '93 and later cut a deal with Relapse Records to get their music over to America. This had no influence on their music whatsoever; they continue to sound like a drunken tribute to Carcass (with a healthy Australian sense of humour). Half of the time they'll be playing a hard rock anthem, the next they'll be belting out a healthy grinding.

Don't take them seriously, just listen and have a laugh. Under the hilarious lyrics is a talent for great rock riffs and grind assaults.

dUSK 03-22-2006 08:00 AM

I actually saw Blood Duster at Overcranked the on Saturday. I only got to see 3 songs though. They were pretty decent, although sound was terrible (some idiot decided to put two stages in a shed with a low roof).
"Who got a spray on tattoo???"
*Crowd cheers*
"Your a fucking homo......who does this *spirit fingers* whenever theres a lead break in a song???"
*Crowd cheers*
"Your a fucking homo"
I didn't actually see him say that, but I thought it was amusing. I remember thinking how gay the whole spirit fingers thing is earlier in the day, when I was watching some crappy Hardcore band.

Apocalyptic Raids 03-22-2006 08:08 AM

have you read his coloumn (of sorts) in Kerrang?

I know, Kerrang is shitty, but his thing is the only decent part.

dUSK 03-22-2006 08:14 AM

Nope, haven't seen it.

Some guy got angry at me on another forum one day as well, because I said Blood Duster were cool. He happened to know a guy who owns a (crappy) venue in Brisbane, where Blood Duster got banned for throwing red paint all over the place. I also thought that was amusing.

Bat_Country 03-22-2006 08:16 AM

Has anyone mentioned 'The Valley'?

www.myspace.com/thevalley

I can't do a proper review because i'm at college but they're a really good band i discovered on myspace.
I highly reccomend them.

dUSK 03-22-2006 08:18 AM

I wouldn't worry about doing a big write up anymore. This thread has kind of deteriorated. Plus, long write ups never generate the discussion you'd hope they would anyway. :(

Seascapes of the Interior

Seascapes are an incredibly good Australian Post Rock band. Unfortunately, they split up at the end of last year, after only releasing one album in their 8 year history. It is however, an awesome album, particularly the final 20 minute song, Moving. They have material available on their website. I recommend Discriminating Wisdom.

Fagan

Fagan are a Trip Hop-ish duo, who make use of a lot of session musicians. They have the ability to create some really beautiful stuff, and then in the next breath seem very mediocore. Hit and miss really. If you go to their website, I suggest downloading Dante and The Beautiful Mundane.

True Live

True Live are a group that I've gotten in to recently. They're a Hip Hop/Rap group, but instead of the usual DJ providing the beat, a band does. This consists of a Drummer, Double Bassist, Violin, Cello and a Keyboard. They've won many awards for their live show, which I haven't seen, but apparently they've put numerous International Artists to shame. Both songs on their myspace are great.

Metallurgy

Metallurgy are a band who are showing a great amount of potential at the moment. Influenced largely by Traditional/Power Metal, they are about to release their first EP (on April 8th). It's actually my most anticipated release at the moment, after seeing a couple of their live shows. James, the guitarist, is a born frontman. They are also really young. I think the oldest is 19. They only have one live recording on the web at the moment, but it gives a good idea of what they have to offer.

I might edit some more stuff in tomorrow, but for now these are a couple of lesser known bands who are worthy of a listen.

Hehehehehehe!

I think "I Just Finished Sucking Off Metalheads In The Mens Urinals" gets the award for funniest song title ever.

Although... I can't really say I know what "spirit fingers" is.

dUSK 03-22-2006 09:38 AM

Ah I had to explain this the other day. Wait up a sec.
Umm, have you ever been to see a hardcore gig, and when there is a lead break in the song, the crowd raises both hands in the air and wriggles their fingers really fast, imitating the guitarist? Thats pretty much what it is, and people called it spirit fingers thanks to some teen movie about cheerleaders. I'm trying to find a pic to show you.
I didn't end up finding a suitable pic.

Australian Rock Bands

I want to introduce a few Aussie rock bands to you fellow rockers around the world (that's to say if you haven't already heard them). I'm interested to see how well known our local bands are and if you're heard of them, and more importantly what you think of them. If some of the bands are unknown to you, I've suggested a few tracks you might wanna download and have a listen. Of course, if you like what you hear.... buy the album!

COG - First cab of the rank is the band called COG, hailing from Bondi beach in Sydney. Try these: COG - 'My enemy' or 'Run' or 'Real Life' or 'Doors' (my fave)

KARNIVOOL - 2nd is a band called KARNIVOOL hailing from Western Australia. Check these out by Karnivool - 'Themata' or 'Shutter Speed'

THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT - 3rd is a band called The Butterfly Effect who hail from my home town Brisbane (Brisvegas). Have a listen to these tracks: 'Phoenix' or 'One Second Of Insanity' or 'Crave'. New album out soon... looking foward to it

TESTEAGLES - 4th is band called Testeagles who hail from, I think, Adelaide. Try these tracks from TE's - 'Turn That **** Up' or 'Underdog'. (What the hell has happened to TE's anyone??... haven't heard from em in aaaaagess!!)

MELODYSSEY - 5th is a band called Melodyssey who hail from the Sunny Coast. Look for 'Aquaplane' from these guys. Recording new album soon also.

Anyway theres 5 there for you guys n girls too look at. Let us know if you've heard of them and what you think. If you are having trouble finding a mp3 or whatever, give me a yell and I'll sort you out. Also, if I missed any other good bands you know of then I'm sure some of my fellow irrate Aussies will let me know good and proper. :chug:

StreetlightRock 05-12-2006 02:43 AM

Although im from Sydney, Ive only heard music from Cog. which was.... not so exciting. Ive been meaning to check out Karnivool. But dude, theres a massive Australian Artists thread around which might be better to check out:

http://www.sputnikmusic.com/forums/showthread.php?t=349460&highlight=Australian+Artists

Apocalyptic Raids 05-12-2006 02:44 AM

I've heard of those bands.

I remember Testeagles being a huge RATM rip off.

bradc1988 05-12-2006 02:50 AM

The only good Australian band I can think of is The Living End, everything else is predominantly crap.

RePyNz 05-12-2006 03:03 AM

Ah ok nice one StreetlightRock, didn't see that thread there, I don't use this forum much as you might guess. Apocalyptic Raids I don't think I agree with you on TE's being RATM rip offs. They do have that element of rap with rock sound Rage has but their style differs in other ways.

Brad thats a huge outlandish call you made there. Not one that would gain much respect from other musicians, Australian or international. But hey everyones got their right to an opinion...

bradc1988 05-12-2006 03:27 AM

Yes, yes I do. I'm into bands like Freak Kitchen, Dream Theater/LTE, Symphony X, Zappa, Derek Sherinian and such and there's nothing like that here, just crappy "music". A friend tried to get me onto to Wolfmother, but god they're boring.

I just went through my playlist and to add to The Living End are;

Silverchair
INXS, but new INXS is crap
The Whitlams

Oh yeah it is obvious considering you've made 14 posts in like 5 years.

borisdablade 05-12-2006 03:28 AM

I am inclined to side with brad, other than mainstream rock there arent that many decent Aussie bands about. But we do have some pretty awesome mainstream rock bands, living end, something for kate, eskimo joe, silverchair.

And on a complete tangent WHAT HAPPENED TO FRENZAL RHOMB! These guys rocked my world in high school, they were just so much fun, and their concerts were brilliant.
