Bad Brains-Re-Ignition
I'd never heard this band, but I like them now. This song starts out with a short intro-riff then goes into a hardcore sounding riff. Then the singer starts, and it surprised me to find out that he was Jamaican. I love this guy's voice. The riff pretty much stays the same except for a couple of quick fills, until it goes into a solo and then back to the chorus. It was kind of a long song, but I'd reccomend this band to anyone who hasn't ried them. Joy Division- Warsaw
I've never listened to this band before, although I've heard about them, and after hearing this song I want to hear more. Warsaw starts with the singer going "3, 5, 0, 1 ,2 ,5, Go!" and then it goes into a simple, cool sounding guitar riff that continues into the first verse. The chorus of "31G" is catchy and has a cool bass part. It has a simple post-punk style solo that fits very well. The third verse that starts with "I can still hear the footsteps" is my favorite. It ends with the same "3, 5, 0, 1, 2, 5" that it starts with. Overall a simple yet very f'ucking good song. I am going to check out more Joy Division and post-punk in general. Okay, so I heard both of the other songs and couldn't find Big Bang so I did another one. I broke the rules a little bit, but not as much as doing a song I've already heard. It commences with a really catch and extremely awesome set of drums then a cool rock 'n roll guitar. After about 30 seconds the vocals come in and they sound very similar to a post-punk type of lyrics. The whole song sounds very punk 'n roll, similar to Johnny Thunders or Guitar Wolf. It's extremely well done and the vocals are much more calm and melodic. "I'd rather be your enemy, than to be nothin' at all" is the chorus. Hmm, very generic post-punk type of song. The song does not change much at all during it which definitely looses your attraction to it. But, oh how I loved the beginning. Very awesome song. It definitely makes me want to check out more of their music. 8/10. ▀▀▀▀ Recommendations: Zounds - This Land... Rudimentary Peni - Flesh Crucifix.
Short but really effective song. Everythings pretty basic. Starts off with basic drumming, basic guitar, but when those guitar effects (Im pretty sure theyre guitar effects) come in that sound like screams, its amazing. The singings slow, and its almost like theyre trying to numb the head of the listener. Rudi Peni, and especially this song really remind me of the Mob. I suggest anyone into 'trippy' (The Mob, Zounds, Poison Girls, etc) anarcho punk music check these guys out. (Cheers Anti Prefix, you gave me excuse to listen to a Rudi record I hadnt yet ;)). 9/10. I Oppose Thee - This Is The ALF (Excellent Conflict cover, with their own lyrics added) Thulsa Doom - Both Human (Anarcho punk with both male and female vocals) Erik Peterson - Olde Tyme Mem'ry (Socially aware folk music, Erik Peterson is a punk himself) Poison Girls - The Offending Article (Really angry feminist song) |
Thulsa Doom-Both Human
I'd never even heard of this band, ever. This song starts out with a simple bass riff and fast paced drumming ,then goes into your typical punk sound-until the singing begins. It has a guy and girl singer, they have a definately unique sound. Then it goes into a slow part with the girl talking, then a quick fill, and back to the fast paced punk soundwith the girl singing. Then the guy talks and there is another quick fill, and the guy sings and then back together again etc,you get it. The lyrics to this song, although one guy is a singer are very feminist. Very pissed off and talking about treating everyone equally. They kind of remiind me of CRASS lyrics...very good song. The Faction - Skate Harassment (2:01)
The song slowly creeps in with varified guitar strokes. "This song is called skate harassment" then more of the guitar. Next is a drum roll and the vocals begin. Very fast vocals sort of reminds me of Bad Brains, but not good Bad Brains. Then it goes into a cool guitar effect and solo. Then the singer sings his last words and the guitar echoes and ends. The song is pretty well done. I've heard much better hardcore than this though. So I guess I feel like I'm being comparative with this rating. Conflict - Tough Shit Mickey
I've always been meaning to get into more Conflict, but I dont know. I have Ten or so songs on my computer and they all pretty much put me to sleep. I'm not sure why because I love other Anarcho groups such as Youth in Asia, and Dirt, which are even more slower paced. I'm looking over the lyrics and they are pretty good, but in combination with the really slow music and the crechendo'd vocals it is kind of extreamly boring. The lyrics are actually amazing. I love the line "One son plays with soldiers; the other aggravates the cat." It is all greaty written.. but kind of executed wrong. It ends in a long squeling guitar feedback line, Very annoying. Never heard of them. This song starts out with a weird little voice and some screaming. Then the music starts and there is a simple metalish riff. Then the singer starts and is using some kind of tremolo voice effect, then a quick fill and back to the same riff and singing, then a fill type thing with a deep voice saying 'Just one fix, then to the same riff and a slow simple solo/riff in the background of the normal riff. I couldn't understand most of the lyrics, but he says 'Just one fix' a lot. All-in-all,it kind of gave me a rob zombie/white zombie vibe. I wasn't very crazy about it personally. I’ve never heard anything by this band, but I’ve heard the original song. I like the original better. Starts with slow heavy drums with random Spanish dialogue and static. The guitar quickly comes with a subtle build up and weird synth sounds. The singer has a decent voice, however it’s a little too pop punkish. The chorus has some nice whoa ohs, which I think they added for the cover. The break down goes back to just drums, vocals and quick radio chatter, then a return to the chorus. This song would’ve been a lot better without all the added studio effects. It does a poor job of emulating the 80s and it should’ve just completely reinvented it. A very standard and not too innovative punk cover. 2/10 Recommended: The Independents - Left for Dead (rockabilly/ska) (WC) Youth Brigade - Where Are All the Old Man Bars? I chose this song because I heard this band was good, and diffrent from other fat wreck chords bands. I don't know if that statement is entirely true. Starts out with a few chords, and bassic drumm beat, then the tempo revs up. The singers voice is nothing special, just basic. The song is very basic sounding. The lyrics seem to be about a drinking and such. Standard verse-chorus-cerse structure. Average, good party song though. This song starts off with a short intro which is just a power chord basically, then into the main riff. Then the chick starts singing. She gives me a distillers/courtney love vibe. It starts into an outro with the chick talking and builds up and it goes off. The lyrics were kinda funny, but kinda stupid all at the same time. I thought the distortion on the guitars was kind of annoying as well. The girl's voice was pretty good. It was a very average song. Starts out w/ a strum of the guitar and right into singing. Right away you can tell that they are a classic pop punk band. It is lyrically one of the "poppiest" pop punk songs I have heard. It is basically the same riffs, drumming and vocal structure the whole song. I like the tamborene in the song, different... It is a very enjoyable song. CUP O' TEA by the Mad Caddies
Starts off with a beat of a drum and a cool little pop-punkish riff. this riff has an overdrien sound and is pretty cool. then theres this little part that is just guitar and sounds very resonant. The singing kicks in and is pretty much classic mad caddies singing. fast and powerful. the singer has a strong voice. he sounds like he could definitely make a politically point very strongly because of his ska-ish voice. overall a pretty good song. i liked it. Typical reggae song. I like it a lot. It starts with a drum fill, then the rest of the band kicks in. There are a couple guitars playing, one with a wah-wah, and some kind of mallet instrument, a xylophone or marimba or something. Good lyrics, good instrumentation, good song.

The Weakerthans - Our Retired Explorer (Pop-Rock)
Song starts abruptly with all the instruments and vocals, reminiscent in style of Samson's previous Propagandhi. There's a bouncy ska guitar that joins the fast melodic bass. The chorus isn't too different and powerful, it just has somewhat profound guitar and increased emotion behind the singing. There's a three second pause of silence after, and it returns to the verse. After the second chorus there's a breakdown with emphasis on the ska guitar, then a second for just the bass, then a third for the vocals with repeated lyrics. I didn't detect any creative solos. Overall its not a terrible song, its catchy and short. Just nothing too interesting here. The Delegates - Something Wrong
Song starts off, with nice guitar riffs n trumpet backing. After awile of great instrumental the vocals kick in. The lead singer has a great voice especially for this band. Id have to say they're more ska-punkish because of the guitar and the lyrics the lyrics symbolize normal punk lyrics, but adding the trumpet makes it ska-punk. The chorus is very very catchy, its much louder everything lyrics upped, I really liked it. There's not much of a solo in this song which I was really looking forward to hearing as the intro was really awesome. I was disappointed in that part of the song, but usually in the solo area there is a lot better lyrics basically giving a solo on its own. This is overall a great song im not too big of a fan of ska but id have to say this band is amazing. 9/10 Recommend: 98 Mute - Ultimate High (Skate Punk) A Global Threat - Stop the Violence (Street Punk) Black Sabbath - War Pigs (Classic Rock) Kiss - Detriot Rock City (Classic Rock) Kiss - God of Thunder (Classic Rock) Leftover Crack - Gay Rude Boys Unite (Ska-punk) Minor Threat - Look Back and Laugh (SLC Punk - 80's Hardcore) Pennywise - Wouldn't It Be Nice (Pop-Punk) Hmmm thats enough recommendations. Leftover Crack - Gay Rude Boys Unite
Starts off with someone laughing, then a drum fill into a ska beat. It is an average ska beat. Then there is a few lines of singing for the first verse and then it gets harder for the chorus. Towards the end of the chorus, it picks up and they chant "We'll Take It Back!" a couple times. Then the second verse is the same ska beat, but is longer than the first verse. Then the chorus again. After that, there is a light guitar riff w/ another guitar playing chords and ppl cheering. And then back into the ska beat again, w/ the guitar still playing the light riff. It ends w/ ppl cheering and a weird guitar thing that is hard to explain. Overall, it is an average Leftover Crack song, not great, but not sh*tty. The song starts with a simple guitar intro and then the band starts screaming "Fuck You!" After that bit it gets a little quieter and its just vocals and bass. The lyrics are really cheesey, and it makes me kind of think that the song is a joke. The end of the song goes back to the "Fuck you!" part. I guess the ending's kinda catchy but otherwise this song is musically average and lyrically cheesier than an extra large pizza. Song starts with some quick snare hits, then a distorted rhythm guitar along with a cow-punkish riff and some “heys”. The singer has a full, energetic sounding voice. The verses are fairly simple, with fast palm muted guitar and intervals of the repeated intro. The structure was interesting, it seemed to go: verse 1, verse 2, chorus, and breakdown. The chorus was well done, utilizing the background vocals, as well as the breakdown. Overall, I liked how busy and rapid the song is. It doesn’t really excel too highly at anything else, though. Song starts off very quickly. Extremely Psychobillyilly. I don't really like his voice, you can't understand a word from his stupid psycho voice. Drums seem very old-school punkish. Bass and guitar go nicely. Some cool clapping in the song also. Eventually, the singer starts screaming a little bit more, and it gets better. A pretty simple, yet cool guitar solo follows. 6/10 Recomendations Marathon - I Don't Have A Dancing Problem (Melodic Hardcore) Afroman - She Won't Let Me F'uck (rap) Conflict - A Piss In The Ocean (anarcho) Filaments - Dub (Street-ska) Germs - No God (Bad all around music..just..the Germs.) |
Marathon - I Don't Have a Dancing Problem
Now I listen to see what all the fuss is about, and I determine if it is good fuss or bad fuss. Fuss, not fuzz. The kind of fuss that people go "Yea yea Marathon, oh yea!" and not the kind that goes "I want a apple", you know. The dude in this Marathon band begins to sing almost immediately after I press the sideways triangle (TRY-AYN-GUL, three angles). "Fuck this I'm going dancing" in a kind of pansy voice, although similar to Dave's voice from Big D. Yeah, this is definitely melodic (MUH-LAH-DIK or MELL-UH-DIK?) hardcore. Hey, I like the part where they say "Fight fight fight". but this guys voice isn't doing it for me. Around two minutes into the sond we got a bridge and a solo and junk, like that junk is the guitar going from one speaker to the next!!!! IT was crazy eh. "Fuck this I'm going dancing!" "Fuck this I'm going dancing" "Fuck this I'm going dancing" "I'll be alright.." Is how the story ends. I've already heard Westbound Train and FiFH and they're both great bands. I have been meaning to check out Epoxies so good deal. It starts off with drums and hi-hat. Then it has this techno/trance sound and it totally turns me off to the song. There's this very repetitive beat that begins and the female voice also commences. I don't really enjoy her voice that much, it's okay. That repetitive beat still continues. "Stop Looking At Me..." Okay to be honest with you, I cannot wait until this is over. That repetitive, almost annoying beat is still playing in the background. Whatever that beam of noise is in the background really irritates my brain. I'm in a bad mood, and this mad it worse. Maybe it's this perticular song. I don't like it. Song starts up with a slow, dsitorted riff, then drums and then vocals are added in. As the song progresses, the tempo seems to speed up; by half way through the song, its a lot faster then when it started, but not sure of the exact increase. Although some other sounds are built up over it, the same riff plays through the entire song, split occasionaly by a drum roll. Well, over all, the song was pretty good, even though I found it to be a bit repetetive, as there was no real change in what was played. As far as Anarcho stuff goes, I thought was was good, but I didn't personally didn't feel it was as good as Crass. Overall, I give it a 7/10. Would of been an 8 if it had a bit more variety. It starts off in an extremely fast chord strum that gets you into the song immdiately. Then you start to hear the bass, then the back-up guitar. It slowly pieces all the instruments slowly then the lead singer comes in. "I belong to the blank generation, but I can take it or leave it each time." After that this really cool solo plays and the singer continues. After that it's pretty repetitive and very poppy. Then this really big solo comes in around 1:30. This reminds me of very folk like '77 punk. It's very awesome. "I belong to the blank generation, I can take it or leave it each time." He starts to sing this more and more getting softer and softer as in delves into the end. Then there's singers in the background going "ooo, eee, ooo, eee, ooo." The drum intro is catchy and the starting riffs are powerful. I like the vocal style, it's got a raw but still poppy kind of sound. The chorus sounds pretty good but seems just like a faster version of the verse. The whole song is pretty catchy, definetly something I could see myself singing along too. The lyrics about noone caring anymore are pretty strong but they don't bring you away from the catchy tune and the melody of the vocals matches up really well with the melody of the guitar. Well, not sure if the version I found is infact the live version, as it seems to start off with a windswept sound, which implies a studio. Anyways, the vocals then come over on this, doing a sort of chant, and then a light build up of guitar. About a minute into the song, the guitars are brought up in sound, and vocals become more songlike (or at least as song like as the Subhumans usually are). Drums also come in, but about 30 seconds later, the beat and riff changes, becoming a lot faster. About 2 minutes in, the beat and riff returns to the slightly slower one, and are then followed by a neat little solo that was similar to the previous bridge beat wise. Solo lasts about a minute, and then goes into what I now assume is the chorus. Lyrically, it seems to be the standard anti-government fare - nothing wrong with that though - and put together rather well. Overall, I thought it was a pretty good song, and lived upto what I expect from the Subhumans. 8/10 Choices Ultravox! - New Europeans [Post-Punk/Synth-New Wave] 999 - Nasty Nasty [70's Punk] The Carpettes - Radio Wunderbar [70's Punk] Joe Strummer - Love Kills [New Wave?] |
