This is a Guitar Pro 4 tab but it has pretty much everything, even that long as unison line at the end and the keyboard solo. Very fancy. Mysongbook is THE best place to find DT tabs. Some of them on there are a bit 'ooer' (especially Voices, Met. Pt1 and Hells Kitchen, but I fixed HK up a little. I've got no account, so I can't upload it, unfortunately) but there are some amazing ones like This Dying Soul, Home and Beyond This Life. It's amazing that some people are skilled enough to figure EVERYTHING out by themselves. |
Forum noob here
I have all the DT albums to date, and even a few bootlegs & misc stuff (cleaning out the closet, FIF & WDADU demos etc).. (almost) Each member, by himself, is the peak of today's musical "artistry": Mike Portnoy : band spokesperson, a musical "nutcase" in the good sense (he didn't win 21 Modern Drummer reader's polls -> http://www.mikeportnoy.com/default2.asp ), awing lyric-writer, my biggest influence on drumming to date (thanks, in part, to M2:SFAM DVD and Liquid Drum Theater)... John Petrucci: easily one of the best guitar players out there (can barely wait for his solo album.. i LOVE Damage Control -> 2001 G3 tour), also a grand songwriter, could take on the likes of Satriani and Vai anyday :naughty: John Myung : the epitamy of bass playing, apparently "anti-social" (i've read that, on tours, when they're not rehearsing or soundchecking, he's in some corner, practising... that shoul tell ya a thing or two :amaze: ) Jordan Rudess: for his second piano lesson, he had already composed improvisations for his "homework" (this being when he was either 5 or 9... can't remember now.. :D ), even does solo tours, has several solo albums... Plus if he does things like the piano solo he does on Dance Of Eternity, think about what he'd be able to do with Parkinson's  James LaBrie: a voice that fits in perfectly with what the other guys are doing (for an older proof of JLB's singing, look up Winter Rose, his Canadian band from the '80s.. nice old-school hard-rock, pretty much love-oriented lyrics, but nice overall), great live performance, wouldn't mind having him as a vocal in my band :D From another point of view, i must agree with some that TOT is really not the direction i would've expected DT to evolve.. Myself i "bask" in their older creations: IAW, ACOS, SFAM and even FIF (altough not each and every song.. Hell's Kitchen is one of their instrumental masterpieces). I can't quite say anything on the Portnoy-Carey debate.. i've only seen the video from whatever Tool put out from Lateralus... couldn' make much out concerning the drums, but the overall impression was.. "****, weird stuff..." but i HAVE seen Portnoy in action: Liquid Drum Theater and Progressive Drum Concepts should be a solid proof, reinforcing the Live Scenes From NY.. PS: i'd like to see/hear what Danny Carey would churn out in a week or so.. i don't suppose he'd have time to do that many occult equations or whatever :D , unlike Portnoy.. he & the LT guys did the 1st album in 5 DAYS, and the 2nd in about 15 days... that's gotta be tough to beat  It would be great if Portnoy, Petrucci, Rudess & Levin got together for an LTE3 :D |

I know, I was completely shoked... ***************************************************************** Check this out :http://www.dtfaq.com/category/?categoryid=11#112 Those are misheard lyrics... Pretty funny! Expecialy the one in "the mirror" when JLB sings "lets stare at the problem right in the eyes". You can hear "lets start a party it's friday night". |

Sweet.
i listen to stuff from Piosin all the way to Judas Priest...
my favorite 'area' is kind of in between (queensrych, iron maiden, skid row, tesla, whitesnake) would i like dream theater? is it like 'rapsody'? i do enjoy songs like 'rage of the titans' etc
DT are not even close to what Rhapsody does, and aren't as cheesy as them lol. They don't sing about kings and lord of the rings and don't have a power metal vibe going on (not saying power metal or rhapsody, I actually like power metal and Rhapsody). But you might enjoy DT for their skill and some songs, not sure if you will enjoy their composition though compared to rhapsody and the other bands you mentioned. |
I have a question for you. I've already posted it, but only 1 person answered it, so here it is: Which Mike Portnoy's drum kit is your favourite?
The Siamese monster : http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v618/heartwork_quebec/sspec.gif http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v618/heartwork_quebec/siamesemonster.jpgThis. It's MP's current Drum kit.

The purple monster: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v618/heartwork_quebec/kit2.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v618/heartwork_quebec/puple.jpg MP used this one for FII, SFAM and for touring.

The transatlantic kit: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v618/heartwork_quebec/tasetup.jpg The drum kit that MP used for various side projects.

The awake kit: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v618/heartwork_quebec/mapex2.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v618/heartwork_quebec/iwdrums.jpg This was MP'S kit for Awake and ACOS. It's now retired in MP's basement.
My vote goes to the awake kit. The colors are cool and its not too big. I really love the siamese monster but it's getting ridiculously big. |
It's hard for me to believe that he actually uses every drum and cymbal on the Siamese monster kit. There are like 400 little cymbals on that thing. Oh well, he kicks *** and I'm not a drummer.
|
I reckon his LTE kit is the best. It's small(er) simple, and its got the important stuff.
|
More room to explore and be creative on bigger kits, just like having more strings on a bass :-D My fav DT songs are Take The Time, Metropolis pt1, The Glass Prison, Strange Deja Vu, Fatal Tragedy, Blind Faith, and Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulance
|
It's ok to have a big kit, But he just goes overboard. it's useless having more things in your kit than you can hit in an entire album. And the siamese monster is just him taking advantage of endoursements. Lucky bastard :P LTE still best kit, there's enough to be creative, enough to explore, Dont need a kit much bigger than that.
|
It's one thing to have a big set, another thing to have a big set and be able to play it. There's no use in having a huge set and playing a couple toms, hi-hat, snare, bass, and a couple cymbals. He moves all around it. Look at Neil Peart, his set's humongous but he uses everything for his unique sounds. Same with Terry Bozzio and his chromatic toms (**** him for bein so good, lol), he uses em and it sounds awesome.
|
Those pics of his kits arn't workin for me, anyone know where else I can see more pics?

As a drummer, i'd personally go for a Purple Monster, but with a few subtractions, like:
- the stacked splash/bell on the far right - the gong bass drum - the percussion table (although useful, but i wouldn't use it everyday) - the crotales - the 18"china on the far left - the 32" thundersheet - (even) the two timbalitos   There.. That should make for a "decent"-sized kit, with stuff you could use constantly (other that hi-hats, bass/snare, ride and crash :D ) |

why so many drums?
as a drummer, i prefer five piece kits, one high tom, two floors, snare and a bass. Then two crashes, and nice big ride (A custom ping probably) and some pretty beasty hats. im getting live at the budakon (sp?) for christmas, i have never heard any DT, but am into alot of Prog and Power metal, so is it an ok place to start? |

Instrumedley's a great mix of DT's instrumental work and their are calm and heavy songs. I guess it'S a good start. :thumb: |
The Siamese Monster, its just so BIG!!!

:upset: why didwe stopped posting?
New MP's drumming DVD is out!http://www.mikeportnoy.com/portnoyarchives/dvd5.asp?menu=archives Does anybody here wanna buy it? I probably won't since i'm not a drummer. |
Sounds cool, but I don't play drums so I probably won't pick it up.
|
I can't wait until christmas. I get finally my Live In Budokan DVD! It's gonna be kickass. Anything else Dream Theater related i should pick up aswell?
