Sorry, I still don't have my review up. I'm really lazy, but I promise I might get it up sometime.

Anyways let's keep the Opeth coming.
yeah, Remember Tomorrow has one of the coolest acoustic/ electric mixes.
It's an Iron Maiden song.

PeEpHoLe_10 07-30-2004 03:49 AM

I have a few comments concerning issues in this thread, so here goes..
I love, love, love Opeth and only have three of their albums (deliverence,****ation and recently, like yesterday blackwater park). I shall be getting them all in the not too distant future though.
Flynn, that is not in you in your avatar, just like someone else said i have seen that picture some where else before. But if we are wrong, prove it and post another pic of you.But your still cool for loving Opeth anyway, so its okay that your lying.
And finally, Jmetallica, although i dont live on this board like others i have seen you around alot and thought you had a pretty good taste in music, but you have blown it with that comment about Opeth. How on earth are they boring? Alot more exciting and interesting than the overrated band that is Metallica!

_HiGhVoLtAgE_ 07-30-2004 04:05 AM

i think the best opeth song is a fair judgement. but all of them rock.

XlxRazorxBladexlX 07-30-2004 06:35 PM

I think Opeth are great. Simply amazing, cannot put this band in a genre. They simply are Opeth. Intricate instruments, poetic lyrics, amazing vocals.

I first picked up Blackwater Park because a friend recommended it. So I did, when I first listened to the album, it was like a snooze album. But after listening to more often, I started to like it more after every listen. Now I can't put down the **** CD.

Will definitely buy more albums buy them when I get money.
What about the awesome ones of ****ation, like Windowpane and Death Whispered a Lullaby
Ever since Windowpane was played on MTV, I tend not to talk about it. Great song though especially Death Whispered A Lullaby. :thumb:

Does anyone besides me think Harvest isn't great?

I cannot see what is so good about that song. Not to mention that annoying screeching sound in the backround of every Blackwater Park song. Well not really, but that noise is something that shouldn't be there at all. What is it anyways? Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

It's still an awesome CD.
Steel was a joke that Dan Swanö and Mikael thought up in the recording of Morningrise. They wrote three songs pretty quick, not much effort on any of them, they never really clarified who wrote most of the music, because quite frankly it didn't matter. each song was about two or three simple riffs and that was it. Dan Swanös voice is hilarious in Steel though
That record is quite good actually.

Yeah. I prefer Opeth's version.

You guys know where I can find teh video for Windowpane other than a file sharing program?

Shadows 07-31-2004 11:45 AM
That would be cool, if everyone is up for that. I can do an Orchid one, I have been listening to that alot lately.
****, I was kinda hoping to do Orchid...

naboo 07-31-2004 11:49 AM

Opeth are my all time favorite band. Morningrise is the best album ever.

bucket 07-31-2004 09:46 PM

I am doing Deliverance's review RIGHT NOW. :)

I haven't done a review before, so it might not be good.

Be looking for it up in an hour or two :amaze:

Yepperz, Great recording. One of their finest. I am a bit concerned with what Mikael said about a particular song from that LP though. His least favourite Opeth song is The Night And The Silent Water which bugs the hell out of me. I love that song! It's pry my 2nd fav from that LP! WHY DOESN'T HE LIKE IT!? I really want to find out. Anyone know?

See she there
Entwined with love
Unclean she is

And she comes down to me

Actually...he doesn't like it because when he wrote it, Mike's grandfather died, to which he was close to, so he associates the song with his passing.

Though, I don't know why Peter doesn't like it, but it might be for the same reason Mike doesn't like it.

I still think Blackwater Park is their best, but not knocking Morningrise (which, I was actually gonna name my band that for a while, but we don't play metal)

I still think Still Life doesn't get the credit it deserves...****ing amazing album. Is there a more beautiful song than Benighted? I doubt it

Also, does anyone notice that the guitar riff right after the chorus on PT's "Prodigal" is very similar to the hard riff in "Face of Melinda"??

I always thought that was strange, but Steven probably liked it and wanted to use it

-Listy- 08-08-2004 11:40 AM

Steven is amazing, he brings some great ideas to their music, as shown on the DVD, you should check out his band Porcupine tree, they are quite good
I had to post this. A lot of my old fav bands have sold out and most of the crap I listened to 5-10 years ago just flat out suck now. I bought a CD last year entitled Orchid by Opeth. Lemme tell you...It opened my mind to Music. I listened to Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Pantera etc when I was younger, I am talking the early 90's. There are a select few good bands that have been out there forever and havn't sold out. Slayer, Iron Maiden etc. But Opeth...I don't think It's possible. if you havn't heard of them or heard them I suggest Buying ALL of their CD's. The most Intricate band In my opinion. Songs average around 13 minutes...And you just want MORE!!! The first song I heard by Opeth was In Mist She Was Standing. I had goosebumps....Just when I thought There were no good bands out there Opeth rescued me.

Opeth has no Genre. They are Opeth :thumb:

While Lopez does use that one beat quite often (you know which one I mean), I don't see how you can call him repetitive, especially compared to most all other drummers out there. He's highly creative with his lines, and knows exactly what to play to fit a song.

relliK 08-08-2004 03:53 PM

I truely love this band but they are a bit overrated.I read posts of people busting nuts just talking about them.

I think the drum work on Delieverance (the song) is amazing, espeically at the end.

I think the exotic drums on Closure is also a nice touch and shows his Latin roots and his range

PIGS(1 different one) 08-08-2004 08:27 PM

I first got into Opeth in the fall of 2001. Blackwater park was making a big stink and everyone on the internet was talking about it.

At the time I belonged to the muchmusic "loud" message board, and that was basically the only band I heard mention of...

I decided to download some stuff, the first song I heard was a cover of celtic frosts( I think) circle of tyrants... I did not really like it at first. I knew it was going to be death metal vocals, but I heard they had great clean singing so I decided to get more.

Next... I downloaded to Bid you farewell, I absolutely loved this tune, it made me cry the first time I heard it,NEVER HAD I HEARD MORE EMOTIONAL MUSIC... I needed more to feed my addiction... I sat through the death parts to get to the ever so sweet clean singing, I eventually loved every aspect of Opeth's music. They even led me to like death metal, no band will ever impact me as much as Opeth. I used to listen to them months on end, no other band, just Opeth, all the time.

I seen them live for the first time last Febuary, no one would ever go with me for the previous shows, I am just happy I got more people into this great band so I could actually go with someone. The concert was easily the best I have ever seen, nothing compares.

They are my favorite band X1I9023982983928392839

Det_Nosnip 08-08-2004 08:49 PM

I've recently been bitten by the Opeth bug.

It was actually Arjen Lucassen's "Ayreon" project that got me into Opeth, ironically. I absolutely fell in love with "The Human Equation," IMO the best album released this year without a doubt. After hearing the album, I decided to go out and track down all of the individual vocalists from the project and hear what their respective bands sounded like...

Obviously, I had already heard of Opeth, and had heard a few songs. The first listens had not really left an impression on me...I don't think that I was ready for the DM vocals, and they distracted me from being able to hear the whole picture.

After hearing Akerfeldt's performance with Ayreon, and reading a few articles on the man I thought "I HAVE to give that band another chance!"

I managed to get "Blackwater Park" and "****ation" off of the internet, but went out and bought BP anyways to respect the band.

I CAN'T GET ENOUGH OF IT! Seriously...I probably listen to it at least 2 or 3 times a day, it absolutely never gets old. "Leper Affinity", the first track to BP, was what got me hooked...by this time, I had grown somewhat accustomed to growling vocals, and this time around, I enjoyed them. And then...

Lost are days of Spring
You sighed and let me in
Keep the beast inside
Shackled within my hide
Screaming out too late
Losing to my hate
Grew together with your skin
And paced the trails of sin."

 Yeah...that part *really* did it for me. As I progressed through the album, I realized just how absurdly diverse and amazing the band is. When it's all said and done, my two favorite tracks are "Harvest" and "The Funeral Portrait," which each represent a polar opposite on Opeth's spectrum, and are both incredible in their own way. The band has quickly skyrocketed to be one of my favorite bands.

-Listy- 08-08-2004 09:07 PM

glad to see alot of Opeth fans :D , yea its nice in their heavier songs, when it breaks into a softer acoustic part or whatever, keeps the song interesting,
Blackwater Park was my first album as well, i think it was Harvest and The Drapery Falls,(altho i love the 'death metal vocal' songs equally) that got me listening to them, i had never heard anything like it in my life

and PIGS, **** your lucky..gettin to see them live :thumb:

'To Bid you Farewell' is 1 of the most beautiful pieces of music ive ever heard

IvortheEngineDriver 08-08-2004 10:33 PM

I almost saw them in OKC in Februrary, but I was snowed in...pissed me off :upset:

Cardboard Headgear 08-09-2004 01:03 AM

Saw them back in January or February, whenever it was they were in San Francisco.

Odyssey316 08-09-2004 01:42 AM

Yes, Opeth is one of my favorite bands of all time. I have seen them 3 times live, each more astounding than the last. The first was mainly a heavy set, small crowd in the Detroit area 200 people approx. The second show they toured with Porcupine Tree, one of my other favorite bands of all time. They played pretty much an all easy listening set, along with Porcupine Tree. I didnt mind at all, hearing the new ****ation tracks were amazing. The 3rd time around they played almost all heavy with an encore of "Demon Of The Fall", the bands favorite song to play. Also being a bass player, I noticed their bassist' fingers go INSANE live. One time I was fairly drunk and I swear his picking hand looked similar to that of a giant spider break dancing all over the strings, truly a spectacle to be seen.

Opeths songs, when I hear them, something seems to just click and I just love their sound and the way they seamlessly flow through heavy and melodic pieces, making for quite an experience.\

Also, unsure if anyone has posted previously or has known. Opeth is currently working on a new album that will be released some time in 2005. As long as they keep up their going trends, I'm sure it will be astounding.
