The Freshman is sort of a sad song too.
That's the Verve Pipe... not the Verve.

Bukowski 10-30-2005 11:07 AM

Yo La Tengo - Tears are in your Eyes

darrell 10-30-2005 11:28 AM

The Ataris - Between You And Me

I believe that's a pretty sad song. Can't say I'm a big fan of the band, but I love that song.

lilsolsman 10-30-2005 03:35 PM
The Smiths - There is a Light That Never Goes Out
That is, IMO, one of the most uplifting songs ever written.

Bukowski 10-30-2005 04:03 PM

That reminds me:

The Smiths - Asleep

Very, very sad song. It's probably been mentioned, but i havn't looked through this thread. This is probably my favorite Smiths song.

guitarded_chuck 10-30-2005 04:12 PM

-Johnny Cash/NIN - Hurt

RollerQueen 10-30-2005 10:27 PM
Mineral - Parking Lot
Really? That song seems to pick up after the first verse, after he gets the "violently crying guitar" part done. "Slower" seems much more depressing.

Zmev 10-31-2005 03:22 AM

The Zombies - Maybe After Hes Gone
Husker Du - Never Talking to You again, broken home broken heart
Morrissey - Angel, angel, down we go together

andy is dead 10-31-2005 05:29 AM

Joy Division - The Eternal

The most depressing song I've ever heard.

StaticSynth 10-31-2005 07:46 AM
That is, IMO, one of the most uplifting songs ever written.
Eh, something about the song really saddens me, though now that I think about it, it's not really one of the saddest I've heard.

Yeah, you could look at it that way too. The wailing guitar sounds really sad to me though. I can see what you mean.

Either way you look at it, great song.

Baliente 10-31-2005 09:32 PM
Romulus and Casimir Pulaski Day are so much more heartbreaking.

Especially when he plays it live.

I almost cried.
John Wayne Gacy Jr. has always been the saddest to me, his voice is just so haunting in that song. But I love it.

Glitterati 11-03-2005 08:12 PM

Saddest Songs

No Problem - Crash Basket (http://www.crashbasket.com)

Everybody Hurts - REM

RollerQueen 11-04-2005 01:39 PM

In the first couple of listens, I noticed that The Verve's "The Drugs Don't Work" sort of sounds like The Smiths' "I Know It's Over."

Robert Crumb 11-04-2005 02:24 PM

Randy Newman's "God's Song (That's Why I Love Mankind)" or maybe "Old Man."

Happymeal 11-04-2005 04:27 PM

"Dagger" by Slowdive sucks the life out of me.
