Jaundice 07-08-2009 02:14 AM
try saying the letter n covering your nostrils
i tried to do this and it made me lolol

Jaundice 07-08-2009 02:15 AM

oh man im still cracking up, dont know why.

kris. 07-08-2009 02:16 AM

Don't get it. Sounds like n.

Jaundice 07-08-2009 02:22 AM

First I tried saying "N", and I laughed a little.

But then I tried making the N sound, which I think is what he was talking about, because it made me laugh my ****ing *** off.

illmitch 07-08-2009 02:23 AM

yeah, try making an elongated nnnnnnnnnnnnnn sound

Jaundice 07-08-2009 02:23 AM

its funny as hell. where'd you hear about this?

illmitch 07-08-2009 02:32 AM

im a linguistics student, so i kinda figured it out

n is a nasal consonant, so when you say it air comes out your nose

Jaundice 07-08-2009 02:32 AM

also, you can't just cover your nostrils casually, you have to block the air flow for it to work

EDIT: late

so anyway are there other nasal consonants i should know about?

illmitch 07-08-2009 02:35 AM

n and m are the only ones really used in english, theres also ng like in running

Jaundice 07-08-2009 02:39 AM

I'm incapable of rolling my R's.
I'm incapable of rolling my R's.
Just listen to a bunch of Thai folk music and imitate those chinks and you'll be rolling R's like a pro in no time
im a linguistics student
Sieg

Retroflex 'n' from Hindi et al is pretty cool

Meatplow 07-08-2009 02:48 AM

cellar door is as far as I go with linguistics knowledge

illmitch 07-08-2009 02:49 AM

you mean like the tolkien thing?

and yeah i really need to learn how to roll my R's, almost all other languages that i can think of use normal R's and not the r's in germanic languages

Meatplow 07-08-2009 02:54 AM

Yep, read about it in a magazine somewhere.

Dimmu Burger 07-08-2009 03:00 AM

This is an interesting page.

Jaundice 07-08-2009 03:03 AM

Haha, it is.

I just looked up cellar door on wikipedia and if it weren't for the fact that i was listening to a cool song while reading I would really want that minute or two back
