I can't really see how Metallica are classed as thrash, I think everything they did was Speed Metal.

EDIT:WTF? I posted this after Cathedral.

Neoteric 02-18-2006 11:46 AM
Dave mustaine's depart from metallica didn't really change them at all. They still kicked ass. They did however start changing once Cliff died. So he was probably the main songwriter back then.
the songs with Dave Mustaine are more speed metal while without Dave it was thrash metal.

Britton 02-18-2006 12:33 PM
I disagree with that, but seeing as though you say that, I'm gonna assume you don't like Ride The Lightning.

It's great actually, I've been listenning to S.C.I.E.N.C.E era Incubus heaps lately, love it, so that's what I've been playing more, it's a lot slower then Metallica :p
Burton didn't have that much of a say so in RTL but more so then KEA.
I am very happy Metallica kicked Mustaine out, but I still think he wrote a lot of/influenced Metallica's earlier sound, and honestly that's the only era of Metallica I enjoy.
I'm glad that ghe got kicked out because then we get Megadeth and Metallica

Bloody Knives 02-18-2006 06:20 PM

I strongly disagree about Mustaine influencing Metallica after he was out. Mustaine wrote very immature songs and it was kind of that L.A. thing he wrote when he was in Metallica. Metallica grew so much after he was out.

Jev 02-18-2006 06:28 PM

As did Mustaine. Although some songs on Peace Sells are immature (particularly Liar)

Bloody Knives 02-18-2006 06:56 PM

Mustaine seems to have this thing in his write like he's better then everything and he can over come it all. I'm glad that Metallica shows some maturaty in there write and it shows that they are flawed and can't over come it all.

Liar is on SFSGSW.

And yes, Metallica shows more maturity in their lyrics than Megadeth.

Dude, that's awesome, I didn't know you liked Incubus :D
I fkn love them, I would LOVE to get a hold of this cover after you have done it? :D
As did Mustaine. Although some songs on Peace Sells are immature (particularly Liar)
There's a Liar on Peace Sells?! or are you just getting me excited :p

Hollywood Rose 02-18-2006 07:51 PM

When's the new album come out?

Bloody Knives 02-18-2006 07:54 PM

Probably anywhere from June to December

Jev 02-18-2006 08:07 PM

I'm doubting it'll be out this year.

Seed Awakening 02-18-2006 08:18 PM

Any word on whether there will be solo's on the new album?

PepsiMetal 02-18-2006 08:20 PM

Yea, kirk said himself they will be there.

Yea dude I'll send it your way when we get it done I'll tell you and you can give me your E-mail.

Metallica!

I think it's good that Mustaine got pressed out of Tallica...we ended up with two of the greatest Metal bands ever because of it.

God we need this new album...so this thread can have another three yeras of life lol

Well, i heard that Metallica is playing some new stuff at Download, maybe some of the MX'rs who are going could record some of the new material and share it with the rest of us.

That may add another year of life.

meh. you cant really judge it that way.eg. EXODUS(Kirk)

Sph 02-18-2006 11:58 PM

One of the things I have always wondered when it came to Kirk, is what he would have done had he stayed with Exodus...

Wrote more songs for Exodus.... I mean I don't think he would have done much. I do know he wouldn't be as famous though.

Guitar World when he was on the cover

PepsiMetal 02-19-2006 12:22 AM
When did he say that?
Some guitarist magazine. Not sure of the name, but it was posted like 50 pages ago.

Oops, beaten.
Wrote more songs for Exodus.... I mean I don't think he would have done much. I do know he wouldn't be as famous though.
Well if he still made enter sandman riff, then exodus would probably be bigger than they are now. :p

Darkness 02-19-2006 12:24 AM

Ok, that statement alone shows some promise. :)

Huber 02-19-2006 12:30 AM

Man guys I just got back from jamming with these guys at there pad and it was sweet. We were tearin' it up Metallica style. We should have recorded our Master of Puppets. It was awesome. I need to do that more often.

On the solos:

Yeah, in Guitar World he said he thinks everyone misses the guitar solos, so they will almost for sure be back.

Yeah that is true.

Bloody Knives 02-19-2006 12:39 AM

Well if they didn't have Kirk and he stayed in Exodus then who would be the lead guitarist? That there is the question of the millenium

DaveTheAmazing 2.0 02-19-2006 05:51 AM

Why is Ride The Lightning considered to be great? That album is crap

Stoo 02-19-2006 06:51 AM

Why do you think that?

DaveTheAmazing 2.0 02-19-2006 07:12 AM

Hmm where to start.. Ah, I'll start with track 1, FFWF. The acoustic bit at the start just doesn't belong in the song. It does absolutely nothing for it. It doesn't belong on the album at all. The song as a whole is basically 2, maybe 3 ideas, which aren't that great anyway.

The song RTL. The intro riff, the first time I heard it, made me think "this is gunna be an awesome song", but I was wrong. The singing, to me, sounds off. The solo, IMO, doesn't really fit the song. The song as a whole just doesn't sound solid to me.

For Whom The Bell tolls is OK. I got bored of it quite a long time ago, but yeah, its alright. Needs a solo though.

Fade to Black is the only really good song, imo, on the album.

I'm sure a lot of Metallica fans would agree with me when I say TUI and Escape are poor songs. Both are just lousy songs.

Creeping Death is OK, gets boring and repetetive after the "die, die, die" bit though.

The Call of Ktulu is my least favourite Metallica instrumental. It drags on and there really isn't anything great about it.

I also think the production of the album isn't good at all.

With MOP, you can listen to Master of Puppets and Battery, and think "Hey, these belong on an album together." You can listen to The Frayed Ends of Sanity and Harvestor of Sorrow and think "Hey, these belong on an album together." You can do it with Damage, Inc, and Sanitarium, Blackened and Eye of the Beholder, etc etc etc

But when I see Fight Fire with Fire and Fade to Black on an album together, I think "Hmm, these don't sound like part of the same album." I can't pair any two songs from RTL and see that they belong on the same album. RTL's songs lack that quality. Maybe it's just me, but still.

I just don't get how the fans of Metallica see RTL as a brilliant album. It really isn't. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.
Why is Ride The Lightning considered to be great? That album is crap
It's a brilliant album. I think it's better than MOP. Every song on it (minus Trapped Under Ice and Escape) is a Metallica classic.

Better than MOP? Are you kidding? Every song on MOP is a masterpiece. Orion mops the floor with The Call of Ktulu. Battery can kick FFWF's *** any day. Mop>Rtl. F2B is the ONLY song on RTL that stands a chance against anything on MOP. Get with the times, old man

Jev 02-19-2006 07:26 AM

Yes, I prefer it to MOP, that's my opinion.

DaveTheAmazing 2.0 02-19-2006 07:29 AM

Ronnie>anything on RTL

Stormrider 02-19-2006 08:24 AM

RTL and MoP are both very good albums. But right now, I think I rather MoP. It changes though.

NP - Opeth - Forest of October

Apocalyptic Raids 02-19-2006 08:35 AM

MOP > RTL for sure.
