what about 9/3 -3 = 5/6
That doesn't make sense ... 9/3 is three ... so 9/3 - 3 is 0. and 0=5/6 isnt correct.
hahaha
help
9/3 - 3 = 5/6

would you get the common demonatnater which is 6... then what
You'd multiply all expressions by 6, a like so:

(9/3)6 - (3*6)=6(5/6)

Then, use simple algebra to figure out what happens.

First expression: the three divides into the six twice, leaving us with 9*2, which is 18.

Second expression: 3*6 = 18

Third expression: The 6's drop out, leaving us with 5.

18-18 is not equal to 5. Either you didn't give us a variable or your math book just sucks.

alright thx alot
final question
a rope with a length of 20feet is cut into 3 pieces, the second piece is 4 feet longer than the first. the third piece is tiwce as long as the second piece, give the lengh of each piece and show the algebraic expression used to solve this equation
Could ya help me out on these? I need to factor the following equations:

(m+5)^4 - 5 = m

and

a^8 - 8a^5 + 12a^2 = 0

thanks :)

:amaze:
(m+5)^4 - 5 = m
(m+5)(m+5)=(m^2+10m+25)(m+5)=(m^3+5m^2+10m^2+50m+25m+125)
=(m^3+15m^2+75m+125)(m+5)=m^4+5m^3+15m^3+75m^2+75m^2+375m+125m+625-5
=m^4+20m^3+150m^2+500m+620

so i did all that...why does it not seem right to me???

Let x equal the first piece.
The second piece is 4 feet loinger than the first, so the second is x+4.
The third is twice as long as the second piece, which means 2(x+4).

The total length is 20 feet. x + x + 4 + 2(x+4) = 20

x+x+4+2x+8 = 20
Add like terms.

4x + 12 = 20
Use the differential theorem to get the x's by themselves (AKA subtract by 12 on both sides).

4x= 20-12
4x=8

x=2

That means the first piece is 2, the second is 2+4, the third is 2(2+4)

First=2
Second=6
Third=12

I rule.
