After hearing some samples from their MySpace, I thought it was going to be their first album that was somewhat beyond mediocre.

No it's definitely average. There's a really tiny thrash influence but the thrashy songs are still way too long (yet only like 3 minutes). Their new singing bassist is totally tone deaf too, even in the album's overproduced state.

Is the clean vocalist different from the one that appeared in previous albums?

Yeah, he's the new singing bassist. I think they've had a different one on each of their last three albums but I don't follow them too closely.
