That show made me realize how much I really hate new heavy DT, and also how Myung is probably the most talented and coolest member of the band.
Although I've never seen them Live, I'll agree to that.
But MP is also extremely talented imo..

the2stranger 08-28-2005 06:07 AM

it is so cool , the bass solo on metropolis part 1, if they play it live, you hear all kind of things in the bass solo that you don't hear on cd.
that solo rocks so hard

nowitzki 08-28-2005 09:53 AM
Dream Theater's Gigantour set really sucked honestly, the only cool things they did were play In the Name of God, Lie and a Pull Me Under and Metropolis medley. No Home, no Beyond this Life, no Learning to Live, no Glass Prison, no As I Am, etc etc etc.
I personally think that's what makes DT an awesome band to see live, the fact that they can change their set every night.
LSFNY and Budokan have completely different sets except for one song, yet they are both amazing 3 hour sets. There isn't much DT that I don't like so I doubt any set would dissapoint me too much. Hmm, well maybe the following would:

Goodnight Kiss
Dissapear
Lines in the sand
Anna Lee
The Silent Man
Eve
Through her eyes
The Answer lies within

... but I wouldn't mind any of them if they were part of a set with other songs I liked.

Deconstruction 08-28-2005 09:57 AM

Dream theater live are amazing. I would love to see any of their songs live again...

Deconstruction 08-28-2005 10:00 AM
Setlist was poor, the playing was good, the venue had some really weird reverb that made everything muddy sounding though.

Panic attack intro live :amaze:

Ouch...

The show I went to, I know they played 3 out of the 5 tracks that they didn't play there...Home, TGP, and As I Am. I know they didn't play Beyond This Life, and I don't know about the other one.

DT was stellar live...only little complaint is they didn't interact with the audience AT ALL. They just kinda stood there, and moved around ever so little.

Portney was interesting to watch, with his drumstick throwing and whatnot.

Jev 08-28-2005 11:10 AM

:( I'm not gonna be able to go see DT this October. I was looking forward to it all summer.

Yea I wish they would move around more, but oh well, at least they are one of the tightest live bands in the world :)

billsfan257 08-28-2005 12:08 PM

Yea i was there w/ shattered future, wut a great show, i wish they moved around alittle more too. But thier set was great at jones beach, they played: Lie, As I Am, Home, Glass Prision, Panick Attack, The Pull Me Under/Metropolis Encore, and a few others. One great thing was when they had Rich Christy and Mike Portony play drum solos together on the same set. Overall it was a great show from Dream Theater

vashts80 08-28-2005 11:09 PM

holy crap

The Root Of All Evil
A Fortune In Lies
Panic Attack
Under A Glass Moon
Endless Sacrifice
Caught In A Web
Just Let Me Breathe
Never Enough
Home
As I Am
---
Pull Me Under

was the set tonight in AC. I marked majorly for Home and As I Am. The last chorus of As I Am was the "eat my ass and balls" version, and Pull Me Under was cool. The first verse and chorus were normal speed, but the rest of the song was sped up. And Portnoy tore it up. He tried catching his stick a few times and missed, and his son was behind him playing air drums, haha

Darkness 08-28-2005 11:12 PM

"eat my ass and balls" version? I have to hear that!

MAthiAS 08-29-2005 12:37 AM

Man, why the hell was my setlist so horrible?

1One1 08-29-2005 04:39 AM

Alright, I've listened to Scenes from a Memory and love every second of it. I just have one problem:

I want more.

If I dig Scenes, what else from DT would I dig?

Deth 08-29-2005 06:38 AM

I'm listening to I&W for the first time, I'm liking it alot.

kurrpt 08-29-2005 06:46 AM

went to Gigantour on Saturday.

Portnoy came out, I recognized his arse, and go to talk to him for a bit

Me : "so are you gonna spit like a camel for us" :D
portnoy : "you better believe it"

when i saw them Portnoy was thowing his sticks too all the time but he caught them every time.

he even threw a broken stick to his drum tech, who was standing 10 meter away, and the drum tech only noticed at the llast moment, so he quickly threw another stick, and portnoy caught it and went on playing.

that was a pretty good catch :p

Ok i don't really know much about Dream Theatre but i'm trying to explore new bands and these guys sound good. so can anyone tell me what album would be a good one to start of with? and one thing, does the vocalist scream his vocals all the time or is it sung normally? just wondering 'cos im completely new to this band. thanks.

Yea...was quite brilliant.

Dude above me...try either A Change Of Seasons (the song), Scenes From A Memory, or Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulance (last 2 are albums)

I would also recomend the album Awake, one of their heaviest album, and a great one. O and Labrie sings normally, he doesn't scream.

ok
Dream Theater is a progressive Metal band.
featuring a guitarist, a bassist, a drummer, a keyboardist and a vocalist.
the songs are generaly quite long, and very technical
the vocals are clean, and mostly high in pitch.

I would recommend Images & Words as your first album.
it's there 2nd studio release, and shows the really progressive side of DT.
the album isn't all that heavy, and may sound a bit rockish even.

enjoy :)

the nameless 08-29-2005 12:05 PM

Wooo! thanks guys

Blind Guardian 08-29-2005 12:23 PM

Boy do I love Dream Theater, one of my most favorite bands. In my opinion they are easily the most talented band out there. Every single band member is one of the most talented musicians of their instrument and James LaBrie is one of my favorite vocalists too.
it was a small concert at the boston pavilion so i dont know about any BIG places, like theirs no way you would do it at a place thats alot bigger with alot more ppl
Hey I went to that show too. What town do you live in?

the2stranger 08-30-2005 12:19 PM

small gigs rock.
I prefer them to big gigs by a longshot
I wonder if I will ever see DT in such a small gig :(

Metropolis Pt 1: The Miracle and The Sleeper, from Images and Words, alot of the music in Scenes froma memory is a progression on this song. And this is the story that Scenes From A Memory was written about. The entire concept from that album is drawn from this song, which JP wrote the story/lyrics of.
Also, you might like to try the A Mind Beside Itself Trilogy of songs from Awake. One of my favourite suited songs from DT. Consists of:
Pt.1:Erotomania
Pt.2:Voices
Pt.3: The Silent man
Also, what, to everyone was the first Dt album you bought? Mine was Scenes from a Memory about a month after it came out, then I bought Live Scenes From New York the Day it came out in the UK, which was the 14th Sept 01, I spent ages looking for a copy of Live Scenes with the "Flaming Apple" cover. But couldn't find it. I remember Scenes astonished me so much. It still is my favourite Dt album, alongside I&W and Octavarium.

the2stranger 08-30-2005 01:41 PM

My first DT album was: Images & Words
and it's still my favorite
