I want someone to write an essay on "Progession, musicianship, technicality and innovation in hardcore."

Call it "With Honor and why they own everyone else so hard right now."

What I dont want to read is another essay on the 'Roots' of anything.ever. So no mention of Minor Threat or The Clash.

But how will cats who only read rolling stone know that it's punk?

Try to scream and fail on purpose, that should get you close to their sound.

edit: If you were born a failure, you'll have a head start on the technique. :thumb:

who taught you to be so funny?

I'm liking the influx of the new people on the board again.
The good ole days of when UnderOATH going screamo was big news.
Love it.

What bands were in the San Diego "artcore" movement and what bands were in the Chicago "post-emo" movement?
I'm intrigued by this.

Artcore Bands

Heroin
Antioch Arrow
Swing Kids
Angel Hair (originally from Colorado)
Clikatat Ikatowi (maybe misspelled)
The Locust (arguably more of a grind band)

Chicago Post-Emo

Friction-(Bob Nanna's first band that I'm aware of)
Cap'n Jazz- (probably the best bridge I can think of between tight, poppy indie-emo and a lot of the aforementioned artcore bands)
Braid-(Pretty widely considered as the commercial, if not artistic apex of Chicago Post-Emo, Hey Mercedes doesn't really count in terms of being post-emo given the extent to which they lost a lot of the math rock influence that made braid so intriguing.)
Promise Ring (I consider them a poppier extension of the sound, even though they were based in Wisconsin, particularly given that Davey was in Cap'n Jazz and has a similiar lyrical approach to both Tim and Bob, especially in terms of extending word games and puns into whole lines or concepts to build a song around.)
Sky Corvair- Bob NAnna and Tim Kinsella both sang in this one.
Sweep the Leg Johnny (arguably a Jazz fusion project, but very similiar in aesthetic and approach to a lot of the others)
American Football- maybe a reach, it certainly is more guitar based than a lot of other later Kinsella projects
Make Believe- One of my favorite current bands.

Clarisse gets killed by the government, Montag decides to plant books in firemens houses with the help of Faber, Beatty comes to get Montag because his wife and his wifes friends report that he has books, Montag torches Beatty with a flame thrower, Montag starts running from the mechanical hound, he gets to the river and the hound loses the scent, so the TV people show the hound killing an innocent guy so they don't look bad. Then Montag meets a bunch of professors and scholar hobos who memorize books and then destroy them, so they can rewrite them in a new world. The world builds itself up and destroys it self. That's essentially it. Good book.

SunnyDayRealEstateAM 07-17-2005 11:54 AM

Thank You

oopyman 07-17-2005 11:57 AM

Do you have to do anything other than read it?

sink sink 07-17-2005 12:20 PM

I'm re-reading Fahrenheit 451, good book. I have to write a big essay on any subject and I'll probably write about dystopian novels (1984, Fahrenheit 451, Brave New World, A Clockwork Orange.)

Now let's try to relate this to emo/screamo in some way. Circle Takes The Square have some brainy references in their music, so I think they would get torched in Fahrenheit 451.

oopyman 07-17-2005 12:21 PM

I'm reading The Divine Comedy.

sink sink 07-17-2005 12:25 PM

i'm going to get around to reading that someday

oopyman 07-17-2005 12:33 PM

It's interesting. So many different versions though. They are provide different interpretaions too. Some keep the poetic aspect completely intact, others make it more accessible to the average person. Make sure you find a good one.

Fahrenheit 451 rules, one of my favorite books. I have to read The Great Batsby and A Farewell To Arms.
