Yeah but the sort of numbers game treatment you're giving it makes it sound like we have, say, a +5 of happiness and -5 of sadness and he's just at a constant 0 thus at least partly justifying his lifestyle which really isn't the case

I would agree. Sure life isn't full of roses, but it isn't all doom and gloom either. The experience of both is what makes life, life. You live, you learn. Fear of either is denying your potential in life.
