Someone upload Brothers & Sisters, please :(
I've been wanting that album for awhile, and I saw it the other day for 10$, but then I remembered I needed gas.

Ulysses 06-22-2005 10:05 PM
It kind of works that way. A person slowly gets into prog, and a lot of the time Led Zep starts them off.
Yeah it seemed to me like the natural progression and now I love progressive rock, bands like King Crimson, Yes, Jade Warrior and Camel amongst others, awesome listening, pictures painted with sound.

Seafroggys 06-22-2005 10:21 PM

Heh, I'm the only one who started off with The Beatles, and went from there.

I still haven't fully got into Led Zeppelin, but they are ever so slowly growing on me. I liked AC/DC for awhile a year or so ago, but now I think they are boring and repetitive.

lunch998 06-22-2005 10:23 PM

I'm always proud to mention that I've listened to The Who since I was born.

ATM 06-22-2005 10:24 PM
I don't know why, but I could never really get into Sabbath.

What have you heard?

Ulysses 06-22-2005 10:26 PM

I progressed strangely enough from AC/DC backwards in time to The Beatles and into that whole era which I am currently infatuated with. I still listen to AC/DC when with mates and so forth but I have broadened my spectrum considerably and really discovered some great old and underground music and movements.

Glitterati 06-22-2005 10:52 PM

I got Master Of Reality off the YSI thread. I'm gonna give it a few more tries, but it doesn't really grab me...other than Sweet Leaf.

ATM 06-22-2005 10:54 PM

Sabbath songs you need to hear:

Wicked World
Fairies Wear Boots
Symptom of the Universe
The Wizard
Into the Void
Behind the Wall of Sleep
Snow Blind
Hole In the Sky

That should get you started.

Seafroggys 06-22-2005 10:55 PM

I need to get into more Sabbath. I own Paranoid (obviously) love War Pigs and Farires Wear Boots, but don't know what Sabbath to get next.

Glitterati 06-22-2005 11:03 PM

Ok, I'm going through MAR again. I like After Forever.

lunch998 06-22-2005 11:04 PM

Sabbath never really grabbed me either. Not taking anything away from them, just never got into them like everyone else did.

Glitterati 06-22-2005 11:10 PM
I'm always proud to mention that I've listened to The Who since I was born.
That's awesome. I remember when I first started taking guitar in school, a little way through the year. My teacher showed us a DVD of them doing "My Generation", when they smashed their instruments. It was the first time I had really seen such an angry performance, and after that, they were one of my favorite bands. Nearly two years later, they still are.

ATM 06-22-2005 11:11 PM

Canuck Guy, if you want I'll zip you up a Sabbath sampler tomorow, so you can hear the amazing stuff.

Glitterati 06-22-2005 11:17 PM

Sounds good, thanks.
I never bothered to listen to II because I don't like IV.
I know this quote is like 2 pages back but i honestly think II is where Zeppelin really started to establish themselves with songs like Whole Lotta Love, Heatbreaker, and Lemon Song.

BlackDeathMetalJazz or really ANYTHING else please- 06-23-2005 07:05 AM
Why is it overrated?
It simply bores me. The 2 most popular bands sucked at playing psychedelia. I mean it's not like I haven't given them a chance either because I've tried giving the Dead a chance but I just find it to be unlistinable and just plain boring. Lack of diversity also plays a role. I'm not saying it didn't produce some great bands but compared to the LA scene it just seems mediocore.
If so, judging by some the other Psychedelic bands you compare them to, they aren't as Psychedelic (Unless you're talking about Syd Barrett). Unlike bands like the USA, melody/harmony play a large role, there is a pop element.
Why do you mention just USA? Are you saying I don't listin to psychedelic bands that have pop elements and melody/harmony in them? What about the Moon, Os Mutantes, the Beatles, West Coast Art Experimental Band, Beach Boys (/Brian Wilson)? All of those have plenty of melody/harmony and pop element in them. Are you saying Syd Barrett isn't as psychedelic?
They do not try to play avant garde forms and be that experimental, they play songs and covers. And because of this, these bands are enjoyable to more people and at least listenable.
Being experimental is what psychedelia is all about. I mean without that experimentation factor psychedelic music wouldn't exist.
On the topic of The USA, I find their s/t extremely overrated; I can't even listen to it.
I find it rather ironic that a Dead Head is calling USA "unlistinable". Anthem of the Sun is a real breeze to listin to.

Don't knock Anthem 'round these parts.

Also I love USA's s/t, but I always like zone out while listening to it.

I do the same thing. people can come up to me and start talking but if i'm listening to that, it's like I don't hear them.
Very cool, I don't have any vinyls, but i'm going to start buying them.
Make sure you have a good turntable (otherwise the sound quality will always be bad, you'll still have to contend with poor vinyls) and that you like having to buy your music multiple times. Sadly vinyls don't fit in the CD holder in the car. Maybe I'm just spoiled by all this technology, but I find CD's much more... versatile.

That being said, I just snatched that copy of Jessica. I love that song. Heh, but I don't have any copies of that. It reminds me, that I should go put my dad's vinyls of Eat a Peach and Live at Fillmore East on. No, that's not hypocrisy... ;)

I was listening to a little bit of Blue Oyster Cult too. It's cool that they're a local band (local to me), but I didn't really know what to expect from them. Besides (don't fear) the reaper, astronomy is a cool song and I love how they integrate the clapping rhythm with tne solo. Godzilla is funny. Heh. I've got a feveh, and the only prescription is more cowbell!

Yeah, I think my dad might have a good turntable but I'm not sure. I'll have to see before I buy anything.

RobNY 06-23-2005 08:23 AM

Whoa, I just clicked on the Incubus thread by mistake. Here I am going... what the hell... two pages on incubus discussion? This is sure going unusually fast. Then I kinda looked up. And I was relieved. That was scary.

To uh, keep this on topic, I've finally given Inner Mounting Flame a thorough listen-through. Good stuff. Works very well as an album.

basschick52892 06-23-2005 08:49 AM

dude, i LOVE the classic stuff, Ledzep, the who, etc. but all my friends think i'm weird b/c i can share the same record collection as my parents(my mom almost went into labor with me when she was at a Clapton concert) it might just be @ my school, but 90% of them couldnt pick Robert Plant out of a lineup if their life depended on it.

basschick52892 06-23-2005 08:53 AM
yea i was worried that was just my imagination. o i just discovered a great classic rock band by the name of The Moody Blues. now they are good. check out "Nights in White Satin," "Tuesday Afternoon," "Ride my SeeSaw," and "I'm just a singer (in a rock and roll band)."
dude, you want moody blues? my parents have every single album and have seen them twice live, so i grew up with that
I'll agree with you there. :)

/a little late, but Mark Knopfler also played on Jokerman ;)
I'm pretty sure that Mick Taylor formerly of the Stones played on the Infidels album.

/even later

And The Beatles got me into classic rock too. My parents got 1, and that got me hooked. For my birthday that year I got Rubber Soul and Revolver :D. Then I took like a 2 year vacation from pretty much all music until I got into music again a little over a year ago.

Oh yeah, my parents also played Springsteen on every single car trip.

I've never liked Zeppelin. Robert Plant just sounds like a squealing little gay bitch to me, and I just can't get past his singing. I've tried, but the singing just ruins it all for me.

Have any of you ever caught two classic rock stations playing the same song at the same time? It's fine if it is a good song, but terrrible if it's a bad song
