Shine On is the only song on WYWH I really like. Have a Cigar is okay, I guess.
You don't like the title track? It's such a masterpiece ballad, I just don't see how anyone could find something wrong with it. Welcome to the Machine is another favourite of mine. Such a different, twisted sound to it. |
The Wall never gives you a chance to rest except for in disc changes and Is There Anybody Out There.
Well if you have it on vinyl (like me:cool: ) Theres side changes as well. And they seem to divide the album perfectly in my opinion, Side 1 ends at Mother and Side 2 is more about the war etc. |
I love Shine On, and I like the rest of the songs on WYWH, they're all good. But none of them really seem to stand out, to me at least (except for Shine).

I found Animals on vinyl and I wanted it so bad. A post left on MX will never be enough to describe the shitty feeling I had when I had to accept the fact that I wouldn't be able to get it :upset:  But it's all good.
Time has one of the best lyrcs ever. Looking for them on the web I found this...LOL
http://bernie.cncfamily.com/spi/time.htm You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today And then one day you find that ten years have got behind you No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun
Those are great but how 'bout these ones from Breathe? Long you live and high you fly And smiles you'll give and tears you'll cry And all you touch and all you see Is all your life will ever be I'd love a shirt with that on the back. |
Breathe and Time are my favorite songs off of DSOTM.
Run, rabbit, run Dig that hole, forget the sun, And when at last the work is done Dont sit down, its time to dig another one Here's a little reason for why these lyrics are special to me. I had to read Watership Down (which is one of my favorite books) for school, and every day when reading, I listened to DSOTM. So when I was reading about all these rabbits trying to survive and I heard these lyrics, the sense of urgency was huge. Just thought that might be an interesting little story. |
^ I was just about to post that, actually.
Welcome To The Machine is a good song too. I love all of that synth. |
^ I was just about to post that, actually.
Second verse in Time is my favourite from DSOTM :)
And if anyone's not really into Welcome to the Machine, they should check out Roger Water's version of it on his live DVD/CD In The Flesh. It sounds 100x more amazing! :smoke: |
I remember going through my dad's collection of music and finding Wish You Were Here on tape. At the time Shine On didn't interest me overly much but Welcome To The Machine just blew me away (excuse the cliche).
|
How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year, Running over the same old ground. What have we found? The same old fears. Wish you were here. My favourite Floyd lyric. Great imagery and the use of rhyme works without sounding forced. I much prefer the first parts of 'Shine on' to the second; the build up works really well. |
^ another one of my favorite lyrics. There are so many floyd songs that I love.
|
I really like this one guitar riff towards the start of the second part, its hard to describe though since its such a guitar driven song.
|
I HATE Watership Down.
I like that Breathe has the same chords as Down By The River by Neil Young, so you can make a cool medley out of them. |
The whole of Shine On is probably my favorite guitar-work ever. Especially the first part, with those solos at the beginning. Such an incredible tone on the guitar.

All you touch and all you see,
Is all your life will ever be Best line ever, in the existence of menkind. Those lines are magic. |

I agree, it is amazing work... But my favorite work from Gilmour is probably Animals. He did an amazing job on the entire album with guitar, as with the post-Waters era, though overkill on the number of solos, they're all damn good. |
All you touch and all you see,

YES!!! I got Nick Mason's book for christmas :)

So many drum books. I wouldn't know; is Mason good? He sounds good but how the heck would I know?
|
I just got the Pulse dvd for christmas. :) I haven't watched it yet but am very excited.
So many drum books. I wouldn't know; is Mason good? He sounds good but how the heck would I know?
To be quite frank, no. He's actually a pretty terrible drummer. He's good for what Pink Floyd was, he makes up a big part of their sound by not being good. Most progressive bands have pretty good drumming, but that's really what makes Pink Floyd stand out, it's simple drumming and more complex other **** haha. |

That one's awesome! :thumb:
To be quite frank, no. He's actually a pretty terrible drummer. That's kind of weird to think about. Most prog bands have amazing drummers and bass players, and Pink Floyd has neither. Nick and Roger do alright, but they're definitly no Neil Peart and Geddy Lee.

Awesome! I love that DVD so much.
That's kind of weird to think about. Most prog bands have amazing drummers and bass players, and Pink Floyd has neither. Nick and Roger do alright, but they're definitly no Neil Peart and Geddy Lee.
Heh, well, Roger came up with some fun, if simple lines, and he made up for it all with his lyrics. And Mason made up for his drumming with the butterfly shirt in Live At Pompeii |
I don't really see the point of obsessing over the technicalities of instrumentation. If somebody can make their instrument sound good, I'd say they're "good" at that instrument, which can be just as easily defined by what they don't play. That's why I love Ringo Starr. The Beatles would suck with Neil Pert.
well, Rush sucked with Neil Pert, but that's not the point |

And Mason made up for his drumming with the butterfly shirt in Live At Pompeii
:thumb: I second that. The best thing that Mason brought to Floyd's music was his sound, the tones he got out of his drums and cymbals were exceptional; better than pretty much any other drummer out there. If I could get my snare sounding half as good as his I would be over the moon. I got Delicate Sound of Thunder yesterday, I think that that CD has finally completed my Floyd collection ... not had a chance to lsiten to it yet though. |
And Mason made up for his drumming with the butterfly shirt in Live At Pompeii
No truer statement has ever been made.
I don't really see the point of obsessing over the technicalities of instrumentation. It fits perfectly, and I dont think any other drummer would work with the music. Oh, and I got Darkside of the Moon and The Final Cut today on vinyl. This is good news, for me at least. I almost picked up Ummagumma too while I was there, but eh, another time. |

Where did you go? Millennium Music? And wait, do you own a record player? |
Haha, ya I forgot to tell you. I got one for christmas so I've been buying albums like a crazy man.
I went to a shop on Hawthorne called Crossroads Music. That place fucking rocks, so much good stuff. |
Ohhh I've heard of Crossroads. I just never have had the chance to get out there.
What are their prices like? |
Pretty cheap. I got six albums today for 25 bucks, and they all seem to be in working condition.
|
Wow great prices there.
I just picked up The Wall movie on DVD but I havn't seen it yet. Im real excited because it might help clear up some of my lyrics queries and theres heaps of extras. |
That's an awesome movie. I got that DVD a little while back....it really does help clear some things up. It's still a bit confusing though.
www.thewallanalysis.com ^ That site has some cool ideas on the movie, but it's a lot to read at once. |
That movie is awesome. The flowers and Goodbye Blue Sky scenes have awesome animation.
|
No Hey You though :(
They explain why in the commentary though. |
