NEEDTOPOST 04-13-2012 12:28 PM

dorky dudes with hot chicks is a really common motif and it's catered to this exact audience

it's sort of funny that it backfires half of the time cuz people like juddy actually get jealous and upset at the fictitious situation

Gorgon 04-13-2012 12:30 PM

that's why they make the relationships so fucked up and unstable, makes people feel good about themselves

NEEDTOPOST 04-13-2012 12:34 PM

so glad i stopped watching tv when i did

y'all should too

fingers mccoy 04-13-2012 12:38 PM

cooking shows

Gorgon 04-13-2012 12:38 PM

we're cancelling cable at my place finally

just gonna download/netflix/buy the shows that are worth it. which isn't many

house will be much quieter now, which I am excited for

I want to move out so bad uuuuugh

NEEDTOPOST 04-13-2012 12:39 PM

i always look forward to going home because it's a beautiful setting and a beautiful house but the sound of the tv is inescapable with its layout and its really really frustrating

very difficult for me to read

but i'm moving back in a few months and building a brick sleeping/reading shack

very very excited

Gorgon 04-13-2012 12:42 PM

I've never lived outside of this house, lived here my whole life. Movies aren't annoying, but TV with commercials is so uncomfortable and chaotic. Can't study, read, write, relax or do anything with it on.

that's cool, how big will the shack be?

NEEDTOPOST 04-13-2012 12:46 PM

idk roughly 11 x 7 x 8

gonna try to last the winter in it

Gorgon 04-13-2012 12:48 PM

will there be power?

NEEDTOPOST 04-13-2012 12:53 PM

no

raised bunk. shelving. desk. fireplace. candle or kerosene lamps for light
god i'm excited
thinking about doing it with an amalgam of reclaimed tiles instead of brick.

basically one small barrel vault with earthen shelter to the north side

it's so i can practice with structural tiling/reinforced brick. sorta like that in terms of structure but way smaller and simpler

Gorgon 04-13-2012 12:54 PM

must not get that cold where you live then, eh?

NEEDTOPOST 04-13-2012 12:57 PM

no it gets very cold, historically

wont be a problem at all, will be very well insulated with earth and the fireplace is going to be built with large stones under the earthen shelter to the north so that the heat will be stored and released over long periods

Gorgon 04-13-2012 12:59 PM

well if there are any cracks or the bricks aren't placed perfectly won't it not be able to keep the air out?

I don't think I fully understand the structure of this thing

NEEDTOPOST 04-13-2012 01:04 PM

in any structure you want some air circulation at all times, in all weather

which is actually an issue with this sort of structure because cracks are rare relative to other methods. this structure is basically clay tile layered or "sandwiched" over reinforced mortar (imbued with tensile strength through a bunch of different stuff, chopped straw for example) and lasts for fucking ever with absolutely minimal maintenance

the gaudi structure pictured is a little different because of the climate. def doesnt have any cracks, has windows tho

hmm so how are you going to get air in? worst thing would be to have stagnant air near the fire producing CO or worse yet making the fire go out.
Maybe windows would be good to put in?

NEEDTOPOST 04-13-2012 01:14 PM

it'll maybe have a window to the south, maybe a hatch above the bunk, definitely two adjustable circular vents/openings on the underside of the apex of the barrel on either side which will both be reachable from the bunk

air will circulate through the imperfect doorway and up the chimney regardless

Gorgon 04-13-2012 01:17 PM

when the fire is going air isnt' supposed to go down it, right? that's not safe, right?

and oh yeah that's true about the door.

NEEDTOPOST 04-13-2012 01:20 PM

it wouldnt go down it

Gorgon 04-13-2012 01:22 PM

yeah that's what I thought, but would the amount of air coming in through the door's imperfections be enough to keep the fire running correctly?

my first instinct is no

NEEDTOPOST 04-13-2012 01:23 PM

re: two vents

they'll be there

Gorgon 04-13-2012 01:23 PM

OK I JUST DONT WANT YOU DYING!!!!!!!!!

NEEDTOPOST 04-13-2012 01:24 PM

lol thanks i wont, it's a simple operation

Gorgon 04-13-2012 01:31 PM

that's a cool project, though. Definitely something to brag about if you get it to work correctly.

This summer I'm working on my fitness and am going to start writing more poetry since some of my friends found some of my poems and said I was pretty good (they're actually critical too and would tell me if it sucked). Either way it's just self-improvement time for me this summer. I need to relax and actually take a break, I feel like I'm starting to burn out

NEEDTOPOST 04-13-2012 01:34 PM

nice

poetry is awesome, it's really really hard to do well though, to my mind

send me some of your stuff

also read poetics of space, it will teach you a lot about writing, indirectly

NEEDTOPOST 04-13-2012 01:37 PM

and read walking on water, the one by jensen

Gorgon 04-13-2012 01:39 PM

I bought "Creating Poetry" by John Drury for normal poetry and technique and theory, started reading but I have exams

and I bought "The Book of Rhymes" which is an analytical look at rap, wanted it so that I could write a rap with my two friends (one of our projects)

and I would but I'm not that happy with any of my work yet, it's all just been practice, really. if you give me your email I could send you some later, though.

I will get those, too.

fingers mccoy 04-13-2012 02:19 PM

i get dissuaded from poetry cause i read my stuff critically, see that something is a cliche then have an argument with myself for many months about whether or not cliche is acceptable and get angry with the entire art itself

12XU 04-13-2012 02:21 PM

so the past like 2 pages have been 2 people talking back and forth to each other? yup place hasn't changed

fingers mccoy 04-13-2012 02:23 PM

oh ok let's be real then

just burped up a taco bell

will j/o to azns later

you're all white and i am not as white

Juddybear 04-13-2012 02:32 PM

started playing skyrim again after not playing for like, three weeks

trying to beat all the daedra quests

shortz 04-13-2012 02:38 PM

As much as I like not working and being finished school I feel so lost.

I'm bored out of my mind, how the fuck does Brent do this shit everyday.

I don't think about cliches when I write, I just try and be fresh and expressive. When I read my stuff again I don't find cliches, maybe just cause I have been practicing weirder free verse stuff and reading lots of contemporary poetry

I dunno, if you're that unsure and detached from your poetry that you can be that upset about whether something is cliche or not you might just not like writing poetry.

I feel like that when I try and write music: while trying to be innovative I feel like I'm just being gimmicky and fake, like I hear myself just copying rhythms from artists I listen to or making melodies that sound the same. Then I hear my friend write and improvise and everything is so confident about it that things that are borrowed from other artists don't come off as stolen but as homages. If you know what I mean
