My school doesnt offer AP music theory. :-( But I will be chilling with my Music theory from last year a lot so I guess i can learn a thing or 2.

I'm taking Popular Music Studies this year (sophomore), and by the time I leave high school I'm going to take AP Music Theory.

I don't know if my school offers AP music theory. It might be an AP class but maybe not, they don't specify with some classes here (Calculus, Art 5). If it is, I'll have 2 AP classes. Art and Theory. I'm glad I dropped Calc becaue I would've failed instantly.


Anyway, I just played bass for 4.5 hours straight. It was sweet but my fingers really hurt. I haven't played bass or much guitar in a month and today I had a really long jam session with some friends (started off as Bass Guitar and Sax then we found a drummer for the last 2 hours)
Our last song had just hit the 20 minute mark when the drummer's dad told us to turn it off and go home.

So I just came back from an open mic night. One of my closest friends from high school was playing, and since I hadn't seen her since Christmas holiday break for her birthday, she asked me to go, so I did.

The only issue I have is that I'm extremely uncomfortable around my friend's friends. My friend is either bi-sexual or lesbian (I forget, since it changes and I hadn't seen her for months), so that means that most of her friends are.

Now, don't get me wrong: I don't judge her for how she leads her life. I certainly wouldn't want to be judged for who I am. Besides, like I said, she was one of my closest friends in high school.

But, man, her friends are so gay.

Again, I'm not homophobic, but at every social-like event I'm at with these people, their homosexuality goes on parade to an extreme level. Example: hands going up skirts. Seriously. And then when they approach me, I feel queered out because I'm so uneasy around how they act. They think it's no big deal, but it's still kind of unsettling. I mean, I would say the same thing with a heterosexual couple, but a lot of this I base on past experiences (being the only straight male at her birthday party, for example, was very, very unnerving).

Anyway, to make a long story short, the open mic night was pretty awful.

The first band that played was a combination of Modest Mouse and a wounded seal. The three members were an acoustic guitar/singer, a Fisher Price accordian (I only wish I was kidding), and a xylophone. The singer absolutely sucked, and his pitch was waaaaayyyyy off, and his voice kept cracking the higher he got. But hey, he thought he sounded good, so more power to him. The other two members did not say a word.

The second act that played were these two idiots I went to high school with. I used to be okay friends with them, but let's just say there was a little skermish in an athletics competition. Anyways, one kid is pure gump, while the other is pure stoner.

The gump's guitar was overdriven on distortion way too much, while the singer's (stoner's) amp was turned way down so you could barely hear him. The gump had naturally no charisma, but stoner kid did okay in playing a lead part.

Then there's always the hilarious one-string solo where a bunch of the same notes are played as fast as possible with a bunch of slides going to each fret.

Seriously, this was one of the solos:

I wanted to shout, "Congratulations! You know where the fret dots are!"

Forget it, you get the idea. But it was ear-splitting with the overly distorted guitar and then the almost no sound coming out of the vocal mic.

And plus, their last song was an absolutely stirring chorus of:

Yes. They freaking stole the "Ohh" thing from "Vertigo" by U2. I could barely contain my laughing.

I do have to say that the stoner's lead parts were pretty good behind the gump's overly distorted, power chord, downstroking riffs.

And finally, my friend got up to play. She played eight songs or so because she was the only one that was good (the shop owner kept telling her to play, heh). Her voice has improved a ton since she was at university. She said that she plays a lot of open mic nights, and battled the butterflies by going out in front of new people all the time.

I could upload a song or two from her, but I doubt people would care, heh. Her biggest influence is Ani DiFranco (sp?) Ando ther artists like that... where they sort of do spoken-word over guitar chords.

The big shocker for me was that she asked me to sing with her on a song :o

But it sounded decent, so hey. Then she tried getting me to play guitar and I was like, nah, my four minutes of fame tonight are more than I expected.

There is a musical theory class at my school but if I'm not mistaken, it's only available for school band/orchestra kids. :(

Ive been to two open mics before.

The first was my friend Kevin, who is an incredible jazz and rock guitarist. He played great. I only watched him (he was on second last) and the last band. The last band called him up on stage and they played Purple Haze it was awesome.

Then the other one was awful. My friends stepdad played his songs, which were cool, but the rest of the people were a bunch of scene kids playing like screamo music and helpless guitar players playing Good Charlotte and Simple Plan.

That's the other "issue" I had with her friends, they were all scene kids. This meant stupid-looking skirts, socks pulled up all the way above the knees (red and black striped socks seemed to be "in"), and everything being black clothes-wise. It was like, am I at a concert for The Faint or what?!

More like a funeral.
