I've seen him may times and that's all I've ever seen him do...even on the Metallica covers Dream Theater did. don't get me wrong the man can do all kinds of tricks and cool **** (I find him kind of boring and emotionless though) but if you can down pick stuff and still play from Battery's speed and up then in my book you are the man

I think actually James did most of the MOP album down picked. I know Puppets and Leper Messiah are, I just found out Battery is, it seems like Orion is, most of Sanitarium is. Crazy.

I'm fairly happy with my Master of Puppets now, I KNOW I can do the first 3:30 at full speed (Well I've never actually timed it with the song, but from ear it is pretty accurate imo) since I'm the only guitarist, and I really don't have that much skill, I'm not going to try to do anymore of it until we find a Lead guitarist I guess.

Yeah that's what I was thinking you meant. I guess my post didn't come out the right way. I think the hardest song to downpick on [I]Master Of Puppets[/I], is [B]Disposable Heros[/B]. It took me so long to finally play that song entirely without stopping. It's pure aggression for guitarists. It's a great song to practice on for speed picking.

he is... i find downpicking only important if your looking for a specific attack sound on the strings other then that why not be economical and alt pick evrything? does it really matter?

not really but downpicking thing of makes your playing ability faster if you change to alt. or economical picking

Yeah the verse part is pretty exhausting, especially if you haven't warmed up first.

That's what a mate told me, when I first started playing guitar I just used alt. pick (Or maybe a mix between economy and alt.) but was never very fast, he said I should learn most songs with a downpick first for the speed though....

hahaha yeah. Try pllaying Flattening Of Emotions by Death, then go back to Disposable Heros. It should be cake. :) Although, flattening of emotions is mainly trebble picking, it's still a good warm-up song.
