OK I'm going to rant for a while so read if you like (fifth listen)

SPOILERS

I'm having a real problem with the track order which brings me to, this album is seriously lacking in flow. The climax (Wings/10000) is also placed at an awkward point of the album. The interludes pretty much suck. I mean Viginti Tres is utter filler. Lost Keys sucks and I can come up with a better interlude in five minutes. Wings For Marie is great and beautiful but it kinda leads to nowhere. It doesn't have the climax Parabol had when going into Parabola. The music just stops and an even quiter 10 000 days starts.

Another flow killer is putting Lipan Conjuring and Lost Keys back to back. The production seems unpolished at some points. I mean Tool was doing what 7 songs for this fricking long. Hell they could have easilly released an EP. Intension sound like a slightly different Disposition.

I love how people say this is way different than anything tool done before. I can actually see the difference with all the Indian stuff going on with 10 000 days but on many of the tracks they seem to borrow the exact same power chord order like in some previous tracks but in a less polished/catchy way. Tell me some more differences? Rosseta stoned seems like a bunch of unfinished ideas and it's flow into Intension and Right In Two seems to copy the way Dispo/Refl/Triad went into one antoher. Been there, done that. Oh then there's the tablas. Wow how different. Danny uses tablas. Completely awesome. Many ideas are left unexplored and many tracks end suddenly without a proper ending.

Also Maynard and Danny barely have any catchy moments on this album. I loved to sing along to some of the tracks on Aenima/Lateralus. On this record I'm just, Ok Danny's good but this is not what I was expecting. Where is Thicks intro? Where's Reflection/Grudge/Thicks type singing? Where are the songs I actually find myself singing along with?

Ok now I feel better. Sorry guys.
The way I look at the downloading thing...

Now that the album is leaked, me not downloading it won't have an effect on anything. Tool will not be happier because I didn't download it. The only good that will come out of it is me knowing that if tool did know that I waited, they would be happy (well probably wouldn't care either way). It's not like they have a list of how many people downloaded it and who didn't. If I was helping tool in anyway possible by not dling it, I wouldn't dl it.
I'm not downloading it for my own benefit though because it's all about the expirience of coming home, looking at the album art, and popping it in the stereo. It's so much better that way. The albums that mean the most to me are the ones I have bought. The albums that I download don't have as much depth to me.

Right in... well, one.

Interesting.

got tool? 04-19-2006 05:37 PM

Yeah so i downloaded the album last night in the frantic scramble, and i've gotta say i like it a lot. So far i really like Vicarious, the pot, Rosetta Stoned, and Right in Two. AS for the others, i'm sure that they'll get better as i listen to em more. The only annoying moment on the album for me is that talk box solo in Jambi. Doesn't quite fit in to me.

And can anyone tell me what exactly The Pot is about? I mean, there's the obvious hint from the title and the repetition of "you must've been...high", but in the song there seems to be a lot of talk about hippocrasy ("Foot in mouth and head up ***, so watcha talkin bout?...Who are you to wave your finger, so full of it, ankles deep in muddy waters, fucking hippocrite..."). I figures it was like kids nowadays telling there parents" hey, you smoked pot back in the day...so what's so bad about me doing the same?" I dunno.

I apologize for the lengthy post. It's a record for me.

Edit: great, beaten by fellow posters again :(

Shadius 04-19-2006 05:45 PM

To be honest, I think your opinion on the album will change if you give it a chance. You're not singing along because you don't know the words yet.
quit crying about the album and go make your own
Quit living.:thumb:

Seriously, nobody is crying about the album. Shit in another forum.

Reywas 04-19-2006 06:01 PM

I will give it a chance. You can bet on that. But there's something in the lack of material to explore. The Pot/Jambi/Intension are pretty straightforward, not much to explore. On the other hand Right In Two/10 000 Days/Rosetta Stoned seem to be very explorable and interesting so I'll probably like them much more later on.

That doesn't change the fact this album lacks material or maybe I was just too spoiled to begin with.

Shadius 04-19-2006 06:09 PM

I think all the songs are fairly explorable, atmospherically as well as just what plain notes they're playing. Once expectations fade, I think the music will sink in. It's so early, you know.

Oh, I asked in this thread... maybe a year ago now if people knew what catchy powerchord song Tool covered at at least one of their shows on their Lateralus tour. Turns out it was Commando by the Ramones.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=Y82eYsAfXGc&search=tool

Such an odd song for Tool to cover, even though they seem to do it really well. Especially on the Lateralus tour, lol.

circlethedrain 04-19-2006 06:14 PM

I changed my mind again lol.

Anyone mind hooking me up with the cd? I will luv you long time.

thanks

It's from the phrase 'the pot calling the kettle black.'

The marijuana angle kinda makes sense.

I've been reading some very interesting stuff on Toolnavy. Copied and pasted from Toolnavy:

if 10,000 days is 27 years, and its how long keenans mother was sick...
and maynards 42 now....

42-27 is 15.

i think she died about 4 years ago, if so, hed be 11 when he found out she would sick.

sure would make 11 stand still.

Makes sense to me. Just thought I'd share, so those who don't lurk/post there could see. Also read some interesting stuff on Rosetta Stoned alluding to the Raelian movement.

Shadius 04-19-2006 06:44 PM

I read that as well before the it required me to register, how the heck did everyone else register? I can't seem to use any email to register for those forums.

The song jimmy is based around, supposedly Maynard being 11 and events that took place around that time.

The album may have been named 10, 000 Days because of his mothers paralysis. Possibly the paralysis could be a metaphor for what Tool feels the world and mankind is doing about it's problems.

*shrug*

The Persian 04-19-2006 06:52 PM

I heard the album... and I really need to listen to it more cause it's really not what i expected, nothing like their old stuff

denboy 04-19-2006 06:58 PM

Haha.. I just noticed that on my version of the leak, on Right In Two, at 6:01.. There's a soundclip going "TIMMY!"..
