My other favorites from DSotM (or in general) are:

"Up...
and down....
and in the end, it's only round and round."
I saw that Classic Albums: DSotM thing where it juxtaposed that with videos of all these political riots and it made it seem so much more powerful.

Two Suns in the Sunset

"In my rear view mirror the sun is going down
Sinking behind bridges in the road
And I think of all the good things
That we have left undone
And I suffer premonitions
Confirm suspicions
Of the holocaust to come.

The rusty wire that holds the cork
That keeps the anger in
Gives way
And suddenly it's day again.
The sun is in the east
Even though the day is done.
Two suns in the sunset
Could be the human race is run.

Like the moment when the brakes lock
And you slide towards the big truck
You stretch the frozen moments with your fear.
And you'll never hear their voices
And you'll never see their faces
You have no recourse to the law anymore.

And as the windshield melts
My tears evaporate
Leaving only charcoal to defend.
Finally I understand the feelings of the few.
Ashes and diamonds
Foe and friend
We were all equal in the end."

I think we have a weiner :p That bolded part is my favourite lyric ever. Although the second verse in Time is utter brilliance. So many!!! :amaze:

rippa32 12-19-2006 01:37 AM

This may seem a little stupid but are those lyrics about the A-Bombs that got dropped?

Jim 12-19-2006 01:44 AM

Basically it's about a man experiencing (and dying as a result of) the dropping of a nuclear bomb and the time or date is really non-specific. It could be an alternate take on present day. The detail is frightening. Particularly in the last verse.

His metaphoric words in the second stanza are fantastic, and his description with "suddenly being day again" and "the sun is in the east, even though the day is done" I just dig entirely :)

rippa32 12-19-2006 05:53 AM

I think he is driving a car while it happens too. Talking about breaks and windshields. Actually its pretty damn obvious when you see the artwork(I have it on LP dunno if its different on CD)

Riva 12-19-2006 06:27 AM

I thought it was about a car crash too, what with the sampling of wheels squealing, the girl screaming "Daddy!" etc.

Though it might be all metaphorical! Who knows!?

rippa32 12-19-2006 05:22 PM

I actually don't think it is for a change. It's more depressing to think this person was probably coming home from work to see his wife/kids (possibly the character is a woman, so husband/kids). And getting wiped out before you could see them one last time.

Yield 12-19-2006 05:45 PM

I think he (Roger, that is) meant it to be a metaphor for the nuclear bomb idea, but I think it works either way.

Surf 12-19-2006 06:10 PM

right, my reading:
character is driving home in their car. They watch the sun (the real sun) as it sets in the rear view mirror. Then, the 'rusty cork' possibly a metaphor for control of/responsibility for nuclear arms, 'gives way', i.e. a bomb goes off, and its day again; the atom bomb is the second sun in the sunset.
Post bomb, nothing is left but ashes and diamonds, people having been turned into both (humans = carbon based, diamonds are created from carbon at high temperatures). Since everyone and everything has been turned into 'ashes and diamonds', everything is equal which is a nice touch of irony to finish the song on.
So in a way, you're all right. There is driving, and there are nuclear bombs going off, all at the surface level of the piece, whilst the metaphorical subtext is alluding to the nuclear arms race ('foe or friend') being like a car crash ('the moment when the breaks lock = the moment when the bomb goes off).

Yield 12-19-2006 06:14 PM

Yeah, that's basically what I thought of it.

on another note, Interstellar Overdrive is awesome when listening on headphones.

Apocalyptic Raids 12-19-2006 06:50 PM

I am getting Nick Mason's book for xmas :-)

TheMisterBungle 12-19-2006 06:51 PM

I have that book, it's really great.

Ew, it makes my eyes water all crazy-like. I don't know why, it's just literally painful to listen to for me.

Surf 12-19-2006 06:57 PM
I have that book, it's really great.
This. Its very easy to read and has some great pictures.

Whale and Wasp 12-19-2006 07:01 PM

i tried reading it but it was kind of boring, so i just looked through the pictures

maybe thats because i read "saucerful of secrets" prior to it. now that was an awesome book on pink floyd.

I dont think being in a car was meant to be metaphorical due to the artwork. The second sun of course is, but alluding a nuclear explosion to a second sun isnt original.

MattSharpIsCool 12-19-2006 09:54 PM

Oh damn I forgot to ask for Nick's book for Christmas! Crap!

Yes, Nick Mason and I are on a first name basis <_<

I love that one. I asked for Nick Mason's book for christmas though.

The final lines

"Finally I understand the feelings of the few"

-here, with certain death closing, he has an epiphany...

"Ashes and Diamonds,
Foe and Friend,
We were all equal in the end..."

It's a realisation that even things that are superior to others (diamonds to ashes) or intrinsically opposed (foe and friend) in the end suffer exactly the same fate. Humans dedicate so much time to bitter squabbling and insignificant matters, but at the end of the day we are all cold and buried in the ground. Presidents, bums, gold or copper. Our values society places on things don't mean anything. We are all equal in the end!

Sorry to carry on like a lune, but these lyrics hit me pretty hard :p And I enjoyed Nick's book quite alot :)

rippa32 12-20-2006 01:28 AM

I still think the lyrics for the Wall were better, well okay maybe not "better" but I enjoy deciphering them more. Haha it's not often an artist creates so much discussion over lyrcs.

Jim 12-20-2006 01:32 AM

I like these lyric discussions. Didn't we used to do them alot?

rippa32 12-20-2006 01:41 AM

No idea, im pretty new.

Jim 12-20-2006 01:43 AM

 S'alright.

I recall it happened alot. I remember discussions about Comfortably Numb and various other classics.

rippa32 12-20-2006 03:55 AM

I think I started one way back before I was a regular here. lol wouldnt surprise if it was Comfortably Numb, I always had trouble with that one.

Lunch 12-20-2006 09:02 AM

We used to have them more back when everyone was doing lyrical analysis for Pink Floyd's songs.

They are in the first post.

Yield 12-21-2006 05:24 PM

We need to start doing those again. I read a bunch of them a while ago and they were really cool.

CaptainWaits 12-22-2006 07:35 PM

I bought Meddle today. My Floyd collection is coming along nicely :)

magicbus 12-22-2006 07:37 PM

Meddle is great. My favorite only after WYWH and DSOTM.

I listened to WYWH again today. I forgot how great Shine On You Crazy Diamond is. They're such good songs!

CaptainWaits 12-22-2006 07:39 PM

Shine On You Crazy Diamond is the reason why WYWH is my favorite Floyd album. And yeh, so far Meddle is great.

At the moment, I think my most played Floyd record is Animals, I was very pleased with how that turned out. I love it.

Apocalyptic Raids 12-22-2006 07:57 PM
Meddle is great. My favorite only after WYWH and DSOTM.
:h5:

I like Animals, but it drags at times.

rippa32 12-22-2006 10:21 PM

I think I prefer the early stuff although I only own Meddle. But from songs ive heard before of the early stuff I think id prefer it.

randomthought9 12-23-2006 12:15 AM

That's kinda crazy that you guys bring up lyrics. I've never analyzed them really until recently, and now that I think about it, PF has really good lyrics.

rippa32 12-23-2006 12:53 AM

Oh yer, The Wall is like an overdose of good lyrics. In a good way :thumb:

Danger Bird 12-23-2006 01:15 AM

Shine On is the only song on WYWH I really like. Have a Cigar is okay, I guess.

rippa32 12-23-2006 01:41 AM

I think Have A Cigar is great.

Apocalyptic Raids 12-23-2006 01:48 AM

I love the lyrics to Have A Cigar, definitely one of my favourite Floyd tracks.

The Wall never gives you a chance to rest except for in disc changes and Is There Anybody Out There.

Time has one of the best lyrcs ever. Looking for them on the web I found this...LOL

http://bernie.cncfamily.com/spi/time.htm

You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today
And then one day you find that ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun

I've always liked the 2nd verse the best in Time.

And you run and you run to catch up with the sun, but it's sinking
And racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in the relative way, but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

Yield 12-23-2006 11:36 AM
Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today
And then one day you find that ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun
This has always been my favorite part of Time. The last two lines are just so awesome.
