Jim 10-04-2006 07:14 AM

Hey I finally bought AMLOR. And after the first listen I can safely say I dig it entirely and don't think it deserves quite so much flack. A bit rough around the edges but I think they did well without Roger and it deserves to stand (albiet in the shadow) of it's bigger brother - The Division Bell.

Favourite tracks are probably Signs of Life, On the Turning Away, Yet Another Movie and Dogs of War - which is frankly the effing shiznit.

AHM is the only studio album I have left to get. Do I dare?

Jim 10-04-2006 07:21 AM

And I'll do a list too......

1. The Final Cut
2. Animals
3. The Wall
4. Dark Side of the Moon
5. The Division Bell
6. Wish You Were Here
7. Piper at the Gates of Dawn
8. A Momentary Lapse of Reason (so soon!)
9. A Saucerful of Secrets
10. Meddle

The last few are all basically the same anyhow.

7. Atom Heart Mother
8. The Wall
Hmm...

1. Meddle
2. Dark Side of the Moon

8. The Wall
Whoa, Meddle first? I'll admit that echoes is a great song but first?

Lunch 10-04-2006 06:40 PM

The rest of the album is amazing too, save for poor ol' Seamus.

Surf 10-04-2006 06:49 PM

a pillow of winds? its alright, but nothing special. its got nothing on wywh or dsotm.

meddle: one amazing song, two very good ones, and the rest are ok.
vs
wish you were here: three of floyd's best songs, and two very good ones

Lunch 10-04-2006 06:51 PM

Echoes and One of These Days are actually enough by themselves to compete with their other albums. Add in Fearless and San Tropez and there is a serious force to be reckoned with.

Surf 10-04-2006 06:53 PM

its a force yeah, but can fearless or one of these days rank against wish you were here? i don't really like san tropez, nor seamus

you could possibly argue echoes vs shine on, but i'd give it to shine on.

slack 10-04-2006 06:54 PM

1. Dark Side of the Moon
2. Animals
3. Wish You Were Here
4. Piper at the Gates of Dawn
5. The Wall
6. Meddle
7. Saucerful of Secrets
8. Obscured by Clouds

... and that's all I have at the moment.

Lunch 10-04-2006 06:56 PM

Maybe not individually, but as a whole I see Meddle on par with WYWH. I used to just be blown away by WYWH, but it's lost some effect on me now. Welcome to the Machine and Have a Cigar are great entertaining songs, but nothing that special. So basically you have that partial epic in Shine On (which isn't as good as Echoes) and WYWH (song) that to me isn't much more of an interesting listen than One of These Days.

Surf 10-04-2006 06:57 PM

to lunch: i still love wywh (my favourite song by them). and one of the main things is that i can honestly say that every track on the album is good; i'd listen to it. i couldn't say that about san tropez, seamus or pillow winds. the rest of medle is very good though, don't get me wrong.

s'up slack? i'd try out pulse, its a good introduction to their later years, plus its got some good renditions of the old songs

or if you felt depressive, you could try the final cut. tough going but worth it

AHM is much better than AMLOR imo and I think most people here would agree with me.

As for Meddle, I feel like Echoes, One of These Days, and Fealess are amazing, a Pillow of Winds is really good and chill, San Tropez is good, and Seamus is just filler. Wish You Were I find every song amazing, so I'd go with that first. Meddle isn't far behind though.

slack 10-04-2006 07:12 PM

A Pillow of Winds is probably my favorite track off Meddle. Seamus is interesting from time to time. It's not all that dreadful. :)
s'up slack? i'd try out pulse, its a good introduction to their later years, plus its got some good renditions of the old songs
Pulse is the new DVD, right? Yeah I've been meaning to get that.

Surf 10-04-2006 07:14 PM

its a cd aswell. i haven't actually seen the dvd (no money), but the cd's very good

when they performed seamus live (on the live at pompei film) they had a fill in dog. it wasn't much better to be honest

AnyColour74 10-04-2006 07:33 PM

you mean madomiselle nobs? seamus is better, but nobs is still alright. seamus rocks

Surf 10-04-2006 07:47 PM

thats it. the name slipped my mind. there was a story about seamus belonging to someone from some other band from the era, but i can't remember who. but he'd trained the dog to bark when music was played. i still don't like the song though.

AnyColour74 10-04-2006 08:31 PM

the story is David Gilmour was watching some friends dog who was seamus. the person taught the dog to sing anytime it heard music playing, so i guess gilmour had the idea to write a song and have seamus sing in the background. As for the song itself, you have to give it time to sink in. it's enjoyable once you listen to it a little more

AnyColour74 10-04-2006 08:31 PM

oops double post :smash:

Surf 10-04-2006 08:36 PM

i'm sure it went something like he had a friend (from some other band - i can't remember who) who had trained the dog to bark when music was played. the owner then went away on tour, leaving the dog with gilmour. when trying to record/playing music in his house, dave noticed the god barked. so the band decided to put it on the record. that's why there's voices audible in the background, talking about/to the dog. the band were recored with the dog playing, and the lyrics were overdubbed at a later date.

i got this from nick mason's book (very good) but i don't have it here with me. if somone has it, they can verify the story; wiki's got nothing really helpful

and as much as i listen to it, it doesn't grow on me. i'd like it to, but it doesn't

AnyColour74 10-04-2006 08:40 PM

something like that
anyways..................does anyone have the live wall cd?
