great stuff guys, thanks.
pete and rog are still rocking on. you know this thread isn't very active anymore but i'm gonna do some posting in it and see if i can't bring it up a little. the return of The Who was sort of this threads climax, i think? and the return was somewhat bittersweet for me. i liked reading the old stories, listening to the old music, and knowing where The Who ended. and understanding that end. the old legend. now we have this whole pete & roger thing to consider. well i've considered it long enough! i'm taking my Who back :( |
I like Endless Wire.
|
Well I finally paid my dues and finally bought "The Kids are Alright." I rented it from the library twice about two years ago, but I'm sick and tired of watching WGFA and See Me Feel Me on crappy youtube. It was cheap and an impulse buy, about $8.

1980 My Generation, Audio only

On my way down to the Tull concert on Tuesday, I stopped by a place where I had a $20 gift card. I bought a Tull album (Stand Up) and got the Who Sell Out, which I'm finally listening to. Not familiar with any of these songs, but I'm listening to Armenia City in the Sky and its fantastic. Didn't know they were this good that early on.
EDIT: wtf is up with Rael? Its like the same exact thing as Sparks, but with words! |
Sell Out is alright. Jaguar is seriously the greatest song they've ever done. The bass tone on Hall of The Mountain King is awesome. Lowest point has to be Silas Stingy. I like John's songs, but this really disappointed me.
Yeah, Rael kinda pissed me off. It is interesting to see how some of the ideas evolved into Tommy though. I actually like A Quick One way better than Sell Out. |
General consensus says that A Quick One is their worst album overall, which is why I got this one instead. I know Lunch really likes Sell Out.
|
i like A Quick One. i think its tight, has some nice pop things, rock things. The Who were pretty experimental at this time. perhaps not so much as The Beatles (who were really out there and great, too) but they were more so than many. Townshend was quirky as hell sometimes, all that art school stuff running through his veins, as well as the r&b he loved so much and his own blossoming songwriting sensibilities.
i don't care for Sell Out as much as some. certainly not as much as Lunch. its a good "what is yet to come" album. full of good ideas, some not so good. i think its interesting and wildly uneven and something of a breakthrough album for The Who, but its not among my favorites. |
Worse than the two post-Moon albums from the '80's? No wai.
|
i like Face Dances. nothing is worse than Its Hard.
EDIT: very very very very hard.....so HARRRD! meh |
Yeah the bonus tracks on this album are real meh. Its as if they didn't care at all, like they jokingly go through the vocal takes.
|
All this is silly talk since Sell Out is best thing Townshend has ever done. Absolutely nothing uneven about. All of his other record combined don't come even close to that record. Face Dances is also one the best records Pete ever did, total POP music/lyrical goodness.

This is music, there's no general consensus... |
