You guys are being kind of biased.St.Anger had alot of nu metal qualities.

What nu-metal qualities did it have? I don't see any.
You guys are being kind of biased.St.Anger had alot of nu metal qualities.
Actually yeah it did have some. But that isn't what Metallica was aiming for. The main nu metal elements though weren't there. It just so happens that a couple of stuff that nu metal ppl do was in a couple of the songs. Its mostly just metal.

Sph 01-15-2006 01:58 PM

It's just coincidence, not nu-metal.

PepsiMetal 01-15-2006 02:16 PM
You guys are being kind of biased.St.Anger had alot of nu metal qualities.
Nu-metal - Often has rapping, a DJ, simple guitar riffs, simple bass that follows guitar, hip hop inspired beats, no or short solos, etc...

The only things I see with st. anger that's nu metal is no solos, and the agressive vocals. It sounds thrashy, it sounds speedy, so yea, it's not fair to classify them as limp bizkit.

BLS_Infernus 01-15-2006 03:11 PM

I don't know about St. Anger being Nu Metal. there are only maybe one or two songs that could be consider Nu Metal because James used a 7 string and a Baritone on them

Sph 01-15-2006 03:16 PM

:amaze: I never saw a 7 string or a baritone on the rehearsal dvd.

BLS_Infernus 01-15-2006 03:23 PM

the LTD Viper with the green flames was a baritone and the LTD F series guitar with the bolt-on neck was a 7 string

BartDude 01-15-2006 03:23 PM
:amaze: I never saw a 7 string or a baritone on the rehearsal dvd.
He used a 7-string when recording most of the persidio stuff. (or so he says)
I don't know about St. Anger being Nu Metal. there are only maybe one or two songs that could be consider Nu Metal because James used a 7 string and a Baritone on them
I agree. Most of St. Anger isn't really Nu Metal. Plus you can say that James practically raps in the verses of Purify. But other than that I wouldn't classify St.Anger as Nu Metal.

Britton 01-15-2006 03:29 PM

Hey ya'll check it out! Kirk playing little wing!

http://www.youtube.com/w/Kirk-Hammet-Live-Guitar-Solo?v=uVSEDiyK3-Y&search=Metallica

BLS_Infernus 01-15-2006 03:35 PM

in the rehearsal video he uses a 7 string on Some Kind of Monster, Baritone on Invisible Kid. I would hardly call those Nu Metal and most Nu Metal bands use baritones and 7 strings to get that downtuned song

St. Anger =\= Nu Metal

Sph 01-15-2006 03:37 PM
the LTD Viper with the green flames was a baritone
The Grinch? Don't you have one too?

Which song(s) was that?

BLS_Infernus 01-15-2006 03:45 PM

yeah I have a LTD Grynch...nice guitar

Littlecreep 01-15-2006 03:46 PM

Hi there!

i wanted to visit mxtabs for... tabs, and was suprised that they don't have them anymore...
anyway, i read a few threads when i bumped into this one...

now, you have to know that i live in Freiberg Am Neckar, which is near Stuttgart, germany. freiberg and stuttgart are nice - the only problem is: in 15 years i've lived in this region i haven't met somebody to talk about metallica seriously. (also it might explain why my language isn't 100% grammatically correct :) )

so, lets get to the point.. you may want to understand that i didn't want to read 1000+ posts, so i dunno if this was asked/said before...

i'd like to know why so many people don't like the st.anger album.
sure, it's no match to the old stuff, which i also know good, but imo you can't compare it to each other.
sure, it sounds bad, sometimes simply wrong! but if you look at it from that way that it was meant to be as close to 'live' as possible (not concert-live!), and that it's not about the music in the first way, but about the feelings you get by listening and the messages that are (i can't find a better word...) 'said/expressed', it's a kick *** album!
just listen to purify: the way james screams 'PURIFY! C'MON, PURIFY!' at 4:30 (actually the whole passage from 3:55 to 4:30, 'won't you help me??!' ), it sounds so desperate, so close to how he really (seems) to feel.
There are lots of examples ('the unnamed feeling', 'sweet amber',...).
just try out singing/screaming along with james, it's a ******* good feeling!

also, what the do to the rythm is astonishing! again, 'the unnamed feeling' is a good example.
though all the tracks have a similar sounding, many songs are fully packed with variety.

don't get me wrong: the old stuff is great, too. i start crying once in a while when i'm in the right mood and a song (master of puppets and battery the most) strikes me with my pants down!

woh!long post. again, plz excuse my spelling whatsoever.
just wanted to let you guys know: metal up stuttgarts ***, i'll do what i can do ;)
cu

Wow, your English is certainly better than my German.

Our feelings have been for St. Anger have been discussed many times. And most of (I think?) feel that it's not as bad as everyone thought it was. I think there are some good tracks, and the only real problem I have with that album is the drum production and the silly lyrics, such as in Frantic, though Frantic is my favorite track on St. Anger.

Welcome to MX

Sph 01-15-2006 03:55 PM

Welcome to the forums but I have no idea on what your post is about.

Edit: Nevermind, I understand it now. It's 8am, I haven't slept and the odd placement of paragraphs was messing with my mind.

Jev 01-15-2006 03:57 PM

My band's doing a Metallica Medley for an upcoming gig. How awesome is that?

Bazarov 01-15-2006 03:57 PM

What I got from his post is that, St. Anger is more about the Metallica's emotions and feelings. And that if you really listen to James' vocals and how he sings you can see all the emotion put into the songs.

BLS_Infernus 01-15-2006 04:00 PM

yeah I got that feeling as well...my favorites would be 'My World', 'The Unnamed Feeling' and 'Invisible Kid' as well as 'Sweet Amber'
My band's doing a Metallica Medley for an upcoming gig. How awesome is that?
Mine too! One --> FTB --> Breadfan --> Creeping Death.

Welcome to Littlecreep.
I have no idea why so many people don't like it. It's probably got a lot to do with how much different it is from previous albums. I like it a lot, but there are plenty of things they could have and should have done differently and better.

I figured out how to put videos on my iPod. I'm about to have a ton of Metallica on there.

BLS-- I got the Unamed Feeling EP. It's one of the videos going on my iPod. It's one of my favorites on St Anger

Awesome. So far ours contains a part of every song off MOP.

Littlecreep 01-15-2006 04:11 PM

hey, fast answer!

@butcher: frantic is silly indeed, but if you haven't seen it already i'll recommend you to watch 'some kind o f monster', the video they produced 2001 or what.
you'll understand what those few, repetitive and short verses are about and that it doesn't need many words to explain those feelings.

but nice to hear that not everybody flames it :)

@kingjay: about that i wanted to see if the people i know have not the faintest idea of music or if i'm not alone...
[edit] nevermind... [/edit]

i agree, they should have taken some persidio stuff you hear in 'some kind of monster'. by the way, did they release that somewhere?

BartDude 01-15-2006 04:21 PM
My band's doing a Metallica Medley for an upcoming gig. How awesome is that?
My old band did a Metallica medley at our school's talent show. It went like this:
Creeping Death - Intro to the end of the 1st chorus
Seek & Destroy - Interlude with the guitar solo
Puppets - Intro to the end of chorus
Enter Sandman - Basically the Outro.

That's all we could do cause of the strict time limit. We had to edit some of the songs verses and such to stay within the limit.

BLS_Infernus 01-15-2006 04:22 PM

I've always wonder what if they released Temptation...that song kicked so much *** on the Some Kind of Monster DVD. It wouldn't have fit on St. Anger but they could have released it on the singles album or as a B-side

BartDude 01-15-2006 04:24 PM

Haha Infernus that what I said when i saw SKOM. I actually liked Temptation. They should have released that one song that Lar's dad made them delete. haha

"I really.... really.... I really... don't think so."

Oh yeah, I love St. Anger. No competition with their older stuff though.

Just found and downloaded the 'elevator version' of Nothing Else Matter. Acoustic guitar, no drums, no bass (?), and the strings section alot louder than the original.

I'll upload it if anyone hasn't heard it.

BLS_Infernus 01-15-2006 04:32 PM

Temptation wreck my head
Temptation make you dead
Temptation suck my soul
Temptation fill no hole

the beat on that thing was sweet...nothing fancy but just brillant and amazing

We have a time limit of about 25 minutes. Our setlist is about an hour long.

Then again your talking about an actual gig right? I was reffering to my old middle school talent show.

BLS_Infernus 01-15-2006 05:12 PM

when my band gigs we tend to get an hour. we play most of our own songs but we pick about 3-4 songs out of a hat to cover. most of the songs are either Metallica, Pantera, Slayer or BLS

Sph 01-15-2006 05:16 PM

Question, 'Tallica tune to Eb on Live Shit, don't they?

Edit: After listening again, it actually sounds like E...

I haven't been in a band for like... a year. I jammed with this guitarist last weekend and I know this bassist that likes Metallica so we might start something up. All we need is another guitarist that likes our style of music. There's so many people in my school that love Greenday it's sickening. Very rare will you find a Metallica fan besides... maybe a handful of people in each grade.

pep 01-15-2006 06:00 PM

Same in my school. My band and I are almost the only ones in our grade that like metal. Everybody knows Metallica, but the only song they know is master of puppets and they dont like it cuz its too long. Kinda pisses me off:angry:

PepsiMetal 01-15-2006 06:03 PM

When I went to high school in georgia, well most people liked rap obviously, it was a black school. When I went to high school here in St. Louis, people kinda liked tallica, but usually their popular radio songs. It was mostly green day and other pop punk stuff too though. Metallica aren't known as much as they are said to be known in real life. Online though, there are 1.54 trillion metallica fans.

So have you all seen that acoustic set where it's just James and his guitar?

PepsiMetal 01-15-2006 06:15 PM

No, where?
