The Pot is my favourite so far. It's amazing. Rosetta Stoned kinda sounds like Korn of something. :-/

Its only 9 more days if you live in Aussieland. Will be leaving this thread until the album is actually out.
Its a bit of a shame i think that it went so long without a leak, then it all came out. See you all on the 29th of April |
Morning all. Listened to the album in bed last night once all the way through, then I think I listened to a bit more, but was too tired so went to sleep. Listening to it again now.
Very interesting experience. Vicarious is a great song, I love it now. So catchy, great atmosphere. Spoiler: Jambi, I wasn't getting at first, the vocals were kinda cool in places, but I have to say that the one chord chugga thing wasn't amazing, by far the most amazing part of the song was the talkbox solo, which was one of the most interesting solos I've ever heard, at first I thought it was a heavily effect laden Maynard, I've never heard Talkbox used like that, amazing. Song in general sounded better the second time, it'll be a grower. The Mesuggah influence is apparent. New sound for Tool. Wings was a cool intro. Builds up nicely. Parabol part 2, yet not at all. 10, 000 Days I enjoyed a lot. Great atmosphere, I loved how they incorporated the storm and rain into the song seemlessly. Very progressive, very interesting sound. Maynards vocals were amazing in places. The music was very interesting. The Pot just made me grin so much. I loved it on my first listen. can't wait to get to it in the album again. Maynard is an amazing vocalist, after this many years and hearing him recorded so many times, how does he come up with new sounds like this. Awesome. Lipan Conjuring is like, a much better version of mantra in my mind, a transision track that I could actually listen to. Did I hear a talkbox guitar in there at one point too disguised as a voice? Cool stuff. Lost Keys is weird. Good weird, I guess. Intermission on LSD. Rosetta Stoned... Was quite cool. I thought it was quite good though I don't remember much of it. After this song I just remember it all being very progressive and new sounding. This sounds nothing like Lateralus. It's a great album, we'll see how it goes over time. Maynard sounds great on it (when you can hear him), and the instruments are very cool too. Anyone who likes the more progressive side of Tool should end up really enjoying this album. |
yea I'm downloading it!
60%...almost...almost... |
Christian beliefs have a lot to do with being a good person, and I think Lateralus is all about how to be one. I'm not saying Lateralus is christian, but there could be a connection.
all religion in the world tells you how to be a good person. not only the christian. for me Lateralus is general a spiritual album; edit: ups... that was a bump... from site 8xx  i followed a wrong link |
Nothing can top Lateralus, this doesn't come close. Liking Jambi much better now.
|
I'm not really feeling any temptation to download the leak either. I can hang out in here as long as people aren't discussing the album.
I feel the same. Not that I dont want to hear it,but I just have no major urge to download the leak and ruin it for myself. I salute all you who stand in our corner, and those that have listened and posted reviews, thanks for the clear spoiler heads up (well, those that bothered to anyway). The thread is still readable thanks to that :) (there isnt any sarcasm in that statement btw, in case it was misinterpreted) |
*SPOILER*
I was so dissapointed last night...After waiting an hour and a half for my download i burnt my cd and tucked myself up in bed. So i likten to vicarious and am all :) then jambi come on with tat annoying fckin riff and i'm like 'i can deal with this' well it turned out to be a mediocre song, sounding a little too APC-like for my liking. So then the next track kicks in and im falling asleep WHAT? It's 6 mins of boredom, now i don't know if i wanted it to move too fast or anything, it was nice when the heavy part kicked in but it was somewhat shortlived. 10,000 days was OK i suppose, after the annoying intro but by this time i was feeling tired and frustrated. It wasn't the 77minute eargasm i was expecting i turned off after track 5 and went to sleep. So this morning i am going again, more awake and with a better, almost pessemistic attitude, we shall see how it goes... |
Yah it's pretty much reflex to come to R&M only for this thread, so I can't help but open it everytime I come on Mx.

Setting yourself up for disappointment is so silly. :( This album is very progressive. I can see fans of Undertow and much of Ænima being alienated by much of this release, even much of Lateralus isn't quite progressive in the same way that this is. This album isn't bad, it just might not be to a lot of peoples tastes. |
My expectation has always been that this will be the best Tool album yet, not the best album ever by any band, I cant even judge what deserves that spot. I cant see anything short of a total musical change of direction would dissapoint me
|
It doesn't touch aenima.
At the moment every song seems too long. And i was listening with headphones yesterday, the production makes it seem overly pretentious and some of the sh!t going on messed with my head...:-/ The Pot is a great song. Tool goes to funky town. |
i trust the band knows what they are doing

I'm so angry they didn't continue with the Rosetta Stoned part 1:13 - 1:30. The best part on the album and it's only 17 seconds long  :smash: |
*Spoiler?*
I haven't got past track 5 in a listen yet...lol But i'm talking about stuff like the intro to 10k days...and the pot in general. This album should not be 77minutes long from what im hearing at the moment. It just seems far too drawn out. But maybe that'll help it's replay value. Also this album isn't seeming as 'heavy' as i thought it was gonna be. Aftyer vicarious and Jambi i was thinking it was gonna be pretty intense but it's a little softer than i anticipated. |
To be fair though. Throwing positive/negative opinions around at this stage beyond passing comments about parts of songs is fairly unfounded. Tool's music has always taken a while to sink in for me. I was NEVER, AMAZINGLY awed by Lateralus from the first listen, I thought parts were cool, just like this time. But when you don't know where songs build and climax and sooth then you don't know how to react. When this album has sunk in we will know how to appreicate it and when to act appropriately. Some parts may be shite (or not), I imagine people will have so many conflicting opinions about this release though, it's Tool's Kid A, in a way.
Impressions after my second listen are that this is, for the majority going to be a grower. |
So you didn't hear Intension and Right In Two? Two of the best songs on the record. 10 000 days (song) currently is a big disappointment. Not saying it's bad just I was expecting something completely different.
Shadius I'm saying what I think at this stage. I thought Lateralus sucked when I first listened to it so this all may change. I already changed my opinion about Jambi. I'm still not liking The Pot though, sounds to me like an Undertow B-side. |
ive got it...
I've put it on my iPod and I'll be back in a while. |
Spoiler:
The 10,000 Days song with all the sound effects and such, that song totally took me to some cave with north American indians and shit in a forest. Some people really don't like sound effects in music though, so I can see a lot of people not liking it very much. I can see myself enjoying it a lot over time though. |
Alot of talk on the 10k days forums about this being a decoy. I can't believe they would do it. But then i don't know how suprised i would be if it was true.
It is better on second listen, but i haven't popped a boner over it or anything. Shadius, listen to it with good headphones..it messes with your head... |
I think the people on those forums are morons for the mostpart, and they give Tool too much and equally not enough credit.
Decoy album? Well... This album has some quality stuff on it even at this stage, so why would they go to all the trouble? Nothing about Tool would suprise me, making a decoy album is possible, but in my honest opinion it's highly, highly unlikely. The people over on Tool Navy or whereever have heard it, not been blown away in a single listen, or not got the sound, or expected something totally different and been disappointed, and they're searching for hope that they'll get a heavier Lateralus part II. Spolierish: And yeah man, my headphones are half decent, it was crazy stuff. Some of the riffs on the album totally buzz around all over the place. Am I detecting a LUSTMORD influence here? Particulary the last track. It's like a Faaip de Oaid type deal, but with a Lustmord sound. :) |
I dunno what you're detecting but i feel better with it coming through speakers lol.
|
I just realised, Tool's lyrics do seem to have gone in the direction I thought they would. After the spiritual/positive tones of Lateralus, they went more down to earth. This is their disappointed album, in the flaws of human nature. Their blues album.
After all that bigging us all up, and spiraling out, we're going down to the nitty gritty. |
I don't know why, but the whole album minus vicarious gives me a swampy, marsh like vibe
|
They said that's what they thought it would be...
Right in two is sounding nice... |
has the album art leaked?
