emeralds - does it look like i'm here?
very cool
for some reason I find something about the album to be really cheap. The record was main with a bunch of cheap set ups of mini-synths and effects pedals and I feel like it had the potential to sound very warm, but instead of using textures to progress each song, the songs just sort of lulled into a blur. cool story me. I'm actually looking to review it. |
i like it a lot; i think part of the reason is the whole 'blur' effect. there are certain parts that sound sort of cheap but i'm a sucker for nostalgic sounds and this one basks in them (mostly the obvious video game-esque stuff). basically a huge wall of epic sounds stolen from gameboy soundchips (well, this probably wasn't the actual process but that's how i visualize it). and then there are sort of checkpoints like 'goes by' (one of my favorites) which remind you, like, 'hey, you're here, this is it, okay back to what we were doing before.'
there are also some standouts like the closer ('access granted'), which sort of have little melodies to grasp onto. it's a really interesting balance between the abstract and the grounded, and it often hits that sweet spot just in between the two--blurs the line! a fave for sure |

have you heard the new album? that's where i'm placing all my praise. his EPs have about three really great songs between them while the rest are just solid background noise, but his debut nails whatever he was trying to do |

Scrawl - Velvet Hammer
Monolake - HongKong |
new james blake is fucking crazy. his singing adds a whole new perspective. on past eps he would sort of toy around with rnb samples and on klavierwerke he learned subtlety and was a tad more authentic. But god his new shit is so soulful, it's great.
