Six Foot Revolver 11-06-2005 06:33 PM
At least you know real musicians. Whenever I meet one here, they fit one of the following stereotypes:

1. MTV kiddie. Thinks Slipknot is brutal death metal or Green Day is tr00 punk rawk.
2. Only holding the guitar in hopes of getting laid.
3. Only wants to play Metallica.
Same here with 90% fitting into category 1.

Lord Abortion 11-06-2005 07:42 PM
whats wrong with wanting to play metallica...its good stuff to start out with.
Well, that's not the point, we're not little kids starting out, I personally think we have progressed beyond this and should be writing our own stuff and covering bands more suited to us, not Metallica...

That's bad, but round here is worse
Catergory 1 would not have heard of Slipknot, even
Cat 2 would be driving a lame old car complete with annoying stereo and silly wheels in the hope of getting laid
Cat.3 would only want to play Greenday.

Steerpike 11-07-2005 05:40 AM

You win.

Still, it does get annoying for me that I have to explain my influences as a guitarist and singer, and nobody knows what the fuck I'm talking about.

"Well, I was deeply inspired by Criss Oliva's intensely melodic and multi-faceted guitarwork, but I also really love the stoner/doom sound in Candlemass and Cathedral. And of course I really admire the achingly expressive style of Michael Schenker and Buck Dharma. But as a singer, I'd say my biggest inspirations would have to be Jon Oliva's raw emotional power, Glenn Danzig's ghoulish croon, Michale Graves classic styling blended with punk energy, and Matt Barlow's incredible adaptability."

By then, they just sort of stare at me with a glassy look trying to figure out who the hell these people are.

Riva 11-07-2005 05:42 AM

Alex, your presence on MSN is required, post haste!

Lord Abortion 11-07-2005 07:30 AM

well, I didn't know the guitarists, but I knew the vocalists you mentioned alright...

Steerpike 11-07-2005 07:39 AM
well, I didn't know the guitarists, but I knew the vocalists you mentioned alright...
You'd think anyone who talks to me as much as you guys do would know who Criss Oliva is at the very least.

Lord Abortion 11-07-2005 07:40 AM
You'd think anyone who talks to me as much as you guys do would know who Criss Oliva is at the very least.
Momentarily slipped my mind:upset:

Steerpike 11-07-2005 07:42 AM

Well, just for clarity, one of my earlier spotlights was on Michael Schenker. And Buck Dharma is lead guitarist for Blue Oyster Cult.

And I don't think I need to name the guitarist of Cathedral, seeing as you're already a fan.

Lord Abortion 11-07-2005 07:47 AM

/hangs head in shame

Steerpike 11-07-2005 07:52 AM

At least you know who the singers are. I once told someone I listened to Michale Graves, and they thought it was the same guy who makes kitchen fixtures.

Lord Abortion 11-07-2005 12:09 PM

Is it just me, or are the intros to The art of War by Dungeon and Iced earth's The hunter really similar?

Lord Tim 11-07-2005 09:03 PM

You know, I've really gotta hear that song one day! I've been told that by heaps of people now!

Hells Bells 11-07-2005 09:39 PM
Same here with 90% fitting into category 1.
Heh, yeah, and I work in a mall, so I get to put up with them whenever I work

You should, man The version on Alive in athens is superb. my favourite live album now...It's surpassing Live after death for me, which me being such a frenzied maidenite as I am, is praise indeed:p

shadow_stalker 11-08-2005 11:06 AM

Im sad to say that im abit dissapointed with galloglass' new album, it doesnt quite stand up to legends from now and evermore :upset: but its still a good album

IheartSP 11-08-2005 11:21 AM

Steerpike I knew almost all of those people, half of them from you and your Savatage whoring :p

Stoic 11-08-2005 01:05 PM

So, I listened to a song off the new edguy EP on the radio and thought it was too poppy even for the power standards. However, Tobias sounds at his best.

Kronos 11-10-2005 12:09 PM

Hey you guys - I found this thread languishing on page 5!

Oh the shame...

NP - Opeth Fair Judgement

Skeksis 11-10-2005 12:42 PM

sup Power Metal thread.

I've been listening to a lot of Strato lately, Elements pt. I more specifically. Some of the songs in there are awesome.

Too bad their latest album sucked donky balls. An Strato fans?
So, I listened to a song off the new edguy EP on the radio and thought it was too poppy even for the power standards. However, Tobias sounds at his best.
Can you recommend some Edguy album to start off with? I've heard a lot from this band...

I honestly think it's some of their best work yet. Maybe I'm just a fag, I don't know.

Steerpike 11-10-2005 12:45 PM

Hellfire Club. Best album yet.

Lord Tim 11-10-2005 07:36 PM

Lord Abortion 11-11-2005 03:14 AM
Hellfire Club. Best album yet.
Yep, I could honestly cry with joy.

Dragonforce and Edguy...on the same night!
I'm excited already, plus I'm for the bar afterword too as I'll be 18 by then.

Steerpike 11-11-2005 04:47 AM

Lucky bastard.

Anyway, I just started listening to Nevermore. Hello spotlight.

Riva 11-11-2005 04:54 AM

I'm one of Galloglass' top fans on Audioscrob! :D

Nevermore are brilliant indeed, Alex.

Steerpike 11-11-2005 05:04 AM

I've also decided that since R&M needs a little spice injected into it, I'm going to try and broaden the scope of my series a little bit. At least every other poll there is going to be a wild card band, a group whom you'd expect to find in a different forum, but have been spotlighted for the sake of diversity.

Riva 11-11-2005 05:18 AM

All I know is that Kool and the Gang, or Mike Oldfield, had better be some of your wildcards.

Slapping Penguin 11-11-2005 05:27 AM

Lol Jason. Who just loves the chorus for Sonata Arctica's Wellballergy.

Steerpike 11-11-2005 05:28 AM
All I know is that Kool and the Gang, or Mike Oldfield, had better be some of your wildcards.
If I had the money to buy their albums, they would be. But at the moment, I'm a little short.

Lord Abortion 11-11-2005 07:34 AM

How about Morris Day and the Time?
or Elvis Costello?
what about Ian Dury and the Blockheads?

see...I don't just listen to true metal!

shadow_stalker 11-11-2005 08:16 AM

Ollie you ever listend to Richard Cheese?

Steerpike 11-11-2005 08:42 AM

Well, I've already revealed that tonights poll will include Michale Graves and Blackmore's Night. You'll just have to wait and see who the other two are.

Lord Abortion 11-11-2005 08:50 AM
Ollie you ever listend to Richard Cheese?
Can't say that I have...

shadow_stalker 11-11-2005 03:12 PM

You should he is awesome.

I would get pissed at the bar at Newcastle but i have to work the next day :upset:

Brew 11-11-2005 03:24 PM
Ollie you ever listend to Richard Cheese?
Mr.Cheese is great, every now and again me and a few friends find it amusing to say we're going to listen to some Dick Cheese.

shadow_stalker 11-11-2005 03:30 PM

Hehe i would love him to play something like Dragonforce

ooh he should do nightwish :D

Brew 11-11-2005 03:31 PM
Hehe i would love him to play something like Dragonforce

A jazzed up version of Fury of the Storm would be great to hear.

Slapping Penguin 11-11-2005 11:28 PM
If I had the money to buy their albums, they would be. But at the moment, I'm a little short.
I could send you Mike Oldfield.
