/question from ages ago Serious question Ben, what IS it you actually want to do? I'm doing a creative writing degree in lieu of journalism because it covers a much broader range of writing including journalism and also has literature components and stylistics/writing theory units. Main reason being because it's what I'm best at, ideally wanting to just freelance around doing odds and ends whilst working a day job in something I love like animals/pet/aquarium industry. Oh, and because it gives me skills I need to write half-decent fiction. But you're doing some kind of English Lit. course right? Are you aiming do be a linguistics/stylistics writer or something? |

I'm interested in modern literature, particularly speculative fiction and its social commentary, so I might pursue that at a higher level. Conversely, I might end up as a copy editor at a newspaper or other publication, since I've got a knack for the more technical aspects of English, and high literacy is always a desirable work trait. Honestly, though: I've got no fucking clue what I want to do. I'd love to write fiction for a living, but I first have to actually start finishing some of the things I write. |

I like modern literature more than "classic", I learnt that very quickly doing lit subjects. Spec fic and social commentary, you like Philip K. Dick? I don't know what I want to do when I finish, probably study more, either music or vet/animal studies. But before I decide I just want to work a job and do freelance writing until I can get a hold into the industry with a regular column/editing job or something. If I can do that then that's enough for me, I'd love to write for a magazine or something, not journalistic, but creative type pieces. Personal essays, travel, reviews and such. Eh, time will tell. Back to auditing manuscripts I go. |
Yeah, I quite enjoy Philip K. Dick. Haven't read a lot of his stuff, but Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? is one of my favorite books.

Agreed, completely.
Martian Time Slip, is a good one, one of the earlier ones and very experimental with the narrative structure; there's a few scenes that play through 6 or 7 times through different perspectives with different exposition. It's weird, but a magnificent use of repetition and characterisation. I'm actually using it as the subject of an oral I have to give about narrative devices of a chose author for stylistics class. |
Do you care for modern drama at all? If so, and you enjoy repetition, you probably like Samuel Beckett, yeah? Endgame is a brilliant play that just goes around in circles.
|
I have heard of but not read much of Beckett. I think repetition is a very difficult technique to master, it's far too easy to overdo it, but on the same token, underdoing it makes it pointless.
Circular narrative always interested me, not only because it's the most complex, but goes back to my film study days. I love how something can end but only be beginning at the same time. Playing with time and reality is hard but fun. |
Just ordered two EMG 45DC's for my schecter and an Aggy OBP-3 for the 8-string. w00t
The finger ramp is almost complete for my schecter - it's quite extensive. It is the same radius and height of the fretboard and extends nearly all the way to the bridge. It fits over the pickups too. Oooh, I'm excited to finish it and stain it. Bass Agenda: Setup my remaining 3 basses Install new pickups and pre Satin Poly on my Stingray's neck Order Akai Headrush E2 What's on your bass/guitar agenda? |
I need a distortion/OD that I like more than my Big Muff. My problem is that it's too fuzzy. I'm thinking about a Pro Co Rat. Any other ideas?
I still need to get out and try out a Tele, because I'm very curious about those guitars. Everyone says it's best to change the pickups on the MIM Teles, can you confirm or deny if this is really worth it? People usually say they can be quite noisy and such. And I want to pick up a decent acoustic for cheap. The acoustic I have is kind of trash. |
I have basses with four strings. Hurrrrrr.
I need to upgrade the bridge and get new pots for my Jazz, main bass. Maybe get the fretboard refinished. Really need a bigger amp more than anything. But I also want an acoustic bass. |
Oh I want a cheapish decent acoustic guitar too. That'll do me, I have too much other **** to blow all my money on music gear sadly.

I'd recommend replacing them with humbuckers, which seems to be a fairly common mod with teles. |

Anybody ever tried that black ice onboard overdrive mod? Sounded kind of interesting.
PS, sup d00d? |
I'm outta cigarettes, I think I'm in the begining stages of bronchitis or some other respiratory infection, and I was supposed to take my car into the shop a few hours ago, but I was sleeping and now can't get ahold of my dad who is responsible for the logistical aspect of the whole deal.
But other than that, life is pretty much going as awesomely as it could be. Yousir? |
anybody got their hands on the new mewithoutyou album? my torrent isnt working lame.
|
Spiff, if you want good guitar distortion, get a good valve amp instead of pissing about with pedals. You'll thank me in the long run :p And yeah, I don't like the Tele tone - get some meatier pickups in there that aren't as weedy and thin sounding as those single coils.
My bass agenda has far too much on it, so I'm not even going to try to write it down. Shouldn't be too long before its done for now though :) Also my Zune broke. Need a new mp3 player. 80GB or more. Not ridiculously expensive. Not shit. Options? |
Older model Ipod Video. They work fine, and ought to be pretty cheap.
eBay it up. |

Creative unfortunately don't make any remotely large MP3 players anymore.
|
Used to have a Creative Zen and didn't like it. Have they got better?
|
My mom has a newer one that kicks the old Zen's ***. Faster response, better looking, less finicky.
|
I have a few years old Creative Zen Vision:M 60GB. Sounds amazing.
Before that I had tried to get one of the original Creative Zen's but it was just as they were phasing them out, and the one I bought was defective so I returned it and got the new Vision:M when it came out. I will cry like a little girl if it ever breaks because there is no suitable replacement for it. |

Oh really? I bought mine 5 or 6 years ago, I think, so I couldn't remember. Always thought it was decent, though I like my iPod a lot more. |
apple really did the mp3 player right. as much as i hate macs and mac users, the ipod just cannot be beaten.
