the final cut was originally going to be called spare bricks

MrConeman 10-02-2006 03:44 PM

4 srs?
I didn't know that.

AnyColour74 10-02-2006 05:51 PM

what is 4 srs

Broken Arrow 10-02-2006 05:56 PM

"For serious" I'm guessing.

Kingofdudes 10-02-2006 06:11 PM
The general feel to it, and some of the musical ideas, I think it's quite like it indeed. The Wall dwarfs Final Cut though.
I can enjoy both albums as seperate peices, they just have shades of each other IMO.
Yeah, The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking has the same general feel too. Then again the basic material for all 3 records were written at the same time.

Surf 10-02-2006 06:20 PM

roger waters was at a band meeting, and was the only one with any new ideas for the next album (dave gilmor and rick wright having just completed solo projects) he presented two ideas: the pros and cons of hitchhiking and the wall. the wal voted unanimously in favor of the wallproject, whereas the manager (can't remember his name) voted for pros and cons....

when the wall was being made, there were several unused tracks, ones that the band didn't feel worked in the album setting (i say band, i mean roger waters and bob ezrin, the producer). this included when the tigers broke free. these were planned to be released later under the title spare bricks

however, when touching up the songs for release (...tigers had already been released on single, i think as a b-side to mother) waters was inspired by the outbreak of the faulklands war, and the project took on a life of its own, becoming very much a waters solo project.

roger also went on to record pros and cons by himself, with eric clapton on guitar.

AnyColour74 10-02-2006 07:47 PM

thats the basic story anyway

MrConeman 10-02-2006 07:50 PM

Cool, glad that was cleared up, thanks.

NP - Dogs.
God I had forgotten how amazing this song is, that riff is just...awh.
They keyboard stuff around the 10 minute mark is resonably orgasmic too.

AnyColour74 10-02-2006 07:54 PM

i love that one guitar solo right after david says "just another sad old man all alone dying of cancer" its awesome :chug:

publicastration 10-02-2006 08:15 PM

The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn is better than Dark Side Of The Moon.

Apocalyptic Raids 10-02-2006 08:28 PM

That was random.

I disagree btw.

Montana 10-02-2006 08:48 PM

I also disagree. As much as I love their old stuff, listening to Piper too much makes my head hurt, whereas Dark Side of the Moon is like vicodin. It's like the whole band gave so much to it equally(as far as I know); it feels balanced. Also, it's very dark and mysterious, especially with all the creepy whispering.

rippa32 10-02-2006 08:57 PM

Speaking of earlier Pink Floyd, from what I understand Meddle is the turning point in musical direction for the band, but was the earlier stuff with gilmour like the Syd Barret stuff or another thing altogether?

It was very different, although still very psychedelic. None of the albums in that era are as good as Piper, but they are very experimental and interesting.

AnyColour74 10-03-2006 03:22 PM

me likes saucerful of secrets the best of that era

Kingofdudes 10-03-2006 04:07 PM

ewwwww such a boring album. Their Soundtrack for More is probably the best of that era for me.

AnyColour74 10-03-2006 04:26 PM

more is like one of four pf albums i dont have. the only worth while track i remember from more is the nile song

robo2448 10-03-2006 04:28 PM

I'm not a huge fan of More. My favorite from that era is Obscured By Clouds. Actually, that's after Meddle so I guess that doesn't work. Saucerful then.

magicbus 10-03-2006 04:31 PM

The only More song I ever listen to is "Cirrus Minor". Pretty cool one.

Yield 10-03-2006 05:49 PM

haven't heard More, but it's on my list. I like Meddle and Sauceful about the same.

AnyColour74 10-03-2006 07:08 PM

my list of fav pink floyd albums (these are the albums i have, anyway):

1. Animals
2. Meddle
3. Wish You Were Here
4. Is There Anybody Out There? The Wall Performed Live 1980-1981
5. Dark Side Of The Moon
6. The Wall
7. A Saucerful Of Secrets
8. Piper At The Gates Of Dawn
9. Atom Heart Mother
10. The Division Bell

I've also got like relics and the delicate sound of thunder, but im too lazy to put them on here

Apocalyptic Raids 10-03-2006 08:29 PM

How is Obscured By Clouds?

Zebra 10-03-2006 08:45 PM
How is Obscured By Clouds?
It's my least favorite Pink Floyd album. It's kind of boring, but I haven't listened to it in ages and don't really want to.

Apocalyptic Raids 10-03-2006 08:50 PM

Ah, ok. I am interested in it, mostly because it's right in between Meddle and Dark Side of The Moon, which make up my top 3 Floyd albums along with Wish You Were Here (original, I know :p).

magicbus 10-03-2006 08:51 PM

OBC is pretty sweet. I'd put it before The Final Cut, The Division Bell, AMLOR, Relics, Saucerful, PATGOD, AHM, and More. I guess that makes it like number 7 or 8 on my list.

Raids I'd check it out. It's pretty characteristic of the Meddle era. Cool songs, and really cool guitar work by Gilmour on that one. The "Mudmen" and "Childhood's End" solos are some of my favorites.

Yes, it'd put it ahead of those. But those don't rank too highly. There are about 7 albums that I absolutely love and the rest are just OK.

Zebra 10-03-2006 08:56 PM

If you liked Meddle then you'd probably like OBC, but both of those two albums are probably my least favorites. :(

Apocalyptic Raids 10-03-2006 09:00 PM

I really like the Meddle sound, so I'll probably check it out. Thanks.

magicbus 10-03-2006 09:12 PM

Ahhh ****. Now I feel like doing a list of my favorites.

1. Wish You Were Here
2. Dark Side of the Moon
3. Meddle
4. The Wall
5. Ummagumma
6. Animals
7. Obscured By Clouds
8. Piper At The Gates of Dawn
9. A Saucerful of Secrets
10. Atom Heart Mother (only for the first song)

The Division Bell>More>Momentary Lapse of Reason>The Final Cut

I never listen to the last ones.
