North - Ruins
Pretty intro, with some nice audible bass and melodic guitar playing. I enjoy the drumming, slow and powerful and the song seems to be moving forward nice enough without getting too boring like a lot of post rock. Interesting guitar playing, seems to kind of be out of place in the soft sound but it's pretty good I suppose. The guitar is pretty nice throughout so far, it is a bit repetitive but still nice and upbeat. Interesting, idk if you would call it a solo but lead work nonetheless I liked it, the guitar chords are pretty good here, being a bit more upbeat creating some pretty nice atmospheres, then the song slowly fades out and the end. Overall a good song with some nice atmosphere that ended before it got boring. 7.5/10 Sorry if I didn't write that much but the song was pretty simple and short for post-rock. At the Drive-In - Invalid Litter Dept.
Starts with some scraping on guitar strings & effects by way of an intro, this persists throughout as we have this drum led part with slow keyboard stabs come in. A simple minor key guitar melody introduces itself, so far this song is slow moving trying to capture a kind of sincere moodiness. The singer comes in, and the lyrics and his delivery are by far the most notable part of the song. He reminds me of Zack De La Rocha meets Cyco Miko for some reason. It is something of an intense, vague angry rap, but with some nice vocal melodies in there as well. Interjected between verses, the repeated line Dancing on the corpses ashes really seems to make this song. The chorus is a similar kind of thing driven by power chords. Around 3:08 there is a nice little bridge part, featuring strong use of all instruments on the track into a pretty little dramatic section. It weaves back into the verse/chorus structure, which ends with the aforementioned line whispered softly which explodes into a crunchy end section. It brings the rock. Well it seems very passionate and well constructed, nice production. Hard to fault, it's a nice little song. I do remember this from when the band were getting big before they broke up a long time ago, it's been a while since. 7/10 Songs Danzig - How The Gods Kill (Hard Rock) Return To Forever - After The Cosmic Rain (Jazz Fusion) Burzum - Ea, Lord Of The Deeps (Black Metal) PJ Harvey - To Bring You My Love (Indie/Rock) Link Wray - The Swag (Rockabilly) |

Burzum - EA Lord of the Depths I havent heard too much black metal before, so that is why I chose this one. Being a genre that I am unfamiliar with, and also because I tend to need songs to sink in before I enjoy them, I gave this one about 4 or 5 listens to before writing this. the first thing that stood out was how incredibly repetitive the drums were. I knew a bit about the history of Mayhem, and it was interesting to read that this guy was the person who had murdered Euronymous. My favorite aspect of the song was the guitars. It seems like he wrote a simple drum beat, and then focused on other instruments for this track. The mudiness of the guitar reminded me of some of the earlier HUM sound, and after a few listens through, was somewhat relaxing and soothing to focus on, even though other things like the drums and occasional vocals were grating and intense most of the time. I enjoyed that it was all just one guy. there is always something that feels more pure about music that is completely a single vision, and not an entire groups input. Not really my type of music, but I found it interesting to listen to, and would like to hear other black metal so I have more to compare it to... I hate to give it a number, but 5 or 6 out of 10? Isis - Garden of Light
I've always wanted to check out some post metal/rock (especially Isis + Neurosis) and this was my first experience with this band, and the genre in whole, and it was a welcome surprise. The song starts off excellently, a slow, dreamy rhythm led by the drums and a great melody. The keyboards are done very well, and it draws you in, I'm not sure what I expected, but this wasn't it, relaxing, soothing and pleasantly simple. In fact, it's not until half way through the second minute when the distorted guitars kick in, followed by some chanting style vocals being slightly drowned by the heaviness of it all. From then on, there is a noticeable change in the atmosphere, the next section is much more menacing, and a lot less relaxing, the distortion stays, and for the first time you get treated to the powerful roar of the singer. This, I feel, suits the heavier parts much better, the growling and the powerful guitars give the music a heavy, exciting edge while the haunting, melodic parts make it more serene and beautiful. A mix that when talked about, shouldn't really work, but it does, and Isis pull it off effortlessly, I am definitely going to get more work by this band, and hope it is of the same quality as this song. Thurisaz - Circadian Rhythm
It starts with a dark deep synth buzz. Soon this is joined by some simple acoustic guitar, which builds into 3 layers of guitar, each more complex. With the intro over, it bursts into some melodic death metal with black metal vocals. Synth hangs around in the background adding chords to match the guitars. It goes through a few different sections, repeating a few, but seemingly changing key between a few of them. At 3 minutes is a completely new section, which features some clean vocals and even more synth. A guitar solo of sorts comes in the latter part of this, not bad but not at the usual technical level of prog metal. Acoustic guitar middle section, they have completely replaced the electric guitars and done it seamlessly.. it's actually a bit reminiscent of Opeth in structure, but I find this more interesting. A bit of acoustic soloing too, before returning to the heaviness of before. After this... well it keeps going some more, heavy melodic metal synthed up to the eyeballs. Well, I can't talk about every new section that comes up or it will be too much to read. It is pretty easy to listen to, probably a good transition song for someone looking to try heavier music. 8 minutes is long enough for me, I stopped taking so much notice after about 5 mins and let the rest play on... it's epic. The ending was a bit weak, but for a mid-album song, that might be ok. It's a fairly good song, easy to listen to. Too much synth for my liking, and I usually like it. I would get more of this band, but probably wouldn't pay full attention to the longer songs. 7.5/10 __________________________ Azure Ray - Sea Of Doubts .. dreamy ambient indie Deadsoul Tribe - In A Garden Made Of Stones .. hard rock The Mayan Factor - Self Storage .. rock Deftones - Knife Party .. experimental nu-metal {miocene} - A Message From Our Sponsors .. a heatbutt to the face Dead Letter Circus - Alien .. new wave of aus rock |

azure ray - seas of doubts
First thing I pick up listening to this is that it is a very piano driven song musically. This is based entirely around a piano melody, with various arrangements working it's way around. It is moody and sad, a kind of melancholic beauty exists throughout. A female vocal sings, and she has a very nice voice. I'm finding it difficult to find anything to discuss about this song, as i've pretty much summed it in it's entirety. It's nicely arranged musically, but very simple. It's good, and something I wouldn't mind hearing every now and then but as for something unique this is not that. It is good though. 7/10 Songs Danzig - How The Gods Kill (Hard Rock) Return To Forever - After The Cosmic Rain (Jazz Fusion) Tom Waits - Small Change (Avant Garde/Jazz/Beat) PJ Harvey - To Bring You My Love (Indie/Rock) Link Wray - The Swag (Rockabilly) |
Danzig - How The Gods Kill
Danzig is a name I've seen for years and yet I've never heard them. The intro is a rather quiet guitar picking on power chords. Some male soft calls of "Oohhh". Soon it becomes ominous with reverb drums and some descending lead-ish guitar. Soft male vocals, they sound familiar somehow. The music is fairly pushed back, so I guess the vocals words the most here, but I'm not a big take-notice-of-lyrics person. The singing and drum continue as the guitar goes back to the first riff again. It's a little simple, but not bad. There it is... power up at 2:45, though not as hard as I thought it might be, but that southern slowness.. nice. The lead guitar is translated to the lower strings with distortion and feedback. The swing-rhythm becomes very clear now. It has strong tinges of classic rock, like a cross between Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Tea Party and Down. It's good hard head-nodding/foot-tapping music. It quietens down after a short while, back to the very first guitar picking and some singing, though the drums keep going with power. Back to the hard bit.. nice, I like this bit. Ooh slight variation in the guitaring, with some delay it sounds even better. This doesn't last long before going back to the first riff again to finish. Well.. it was kind of simple but still quite good. I wouldn't have minded a bit more variation, especially with that intro picking they kept going back to. The harder bit was really good, pity they didn't use it more in the song. I would get more Danzig based on this song. 8/10 ____________________________________ D-theme Damien Rice - 9 Crimes .. v soft Dead Letter Circus - Alien .. new wave of aus rock Deadsoul Tribe - In A Garden Made Of Stones .. hard rock Deftones - Knife Party .. experimental nu-metal Delerium - Silence .. trip hop Down - Stone The Crow .. southern rock |
Dead Letter Circus - Alien
The song starts out with an almost "spacey" feeling with a touch of electronic. After about a minute, the song busts in, the lead guitar is quickly strumming octaves, giving a hint of post rock. Things mellow out for the verse. I can't decide if I like the vocals or not... he is a good singer, but I don't really like the tone of his voice. The bass plays some neat fills and the drummer keeps the pace going with his hi-hat. The chorus feels a bit anti-climatic, the verse felt a little more interesting to me. After an instrumental break and a cool transition it busts into a progressive sounding bridge section. One layered guitar picks some dissonant notes and I dig the drums. The song starts to slowly break apart and fade out. I don't really know what else to say. For the most part the song rode at the same momentum throughout. Even though it tried, I didn't really feel like there was a whole lot of dynamics, which is crucial for this type of music, I think. With that said, though, I did find myself coming around to the vocals by the end of the song. The bass hook throughout was cool, and I dug a lot of the stuff the drums and guitars where doing. All in all, definitely not a bad song, unfortunately I didn't find it very memorable. 6/10 Polkadot Cadaver - Any song (who know's what you'll get) Here's a couple: Sole Survivor (Rock) http://media.putfile.com/Polkadot-Cadaver---Soul-Survivor Brainwash http://media.putfile.com/Polkadot-Cadaver---Brainwash Ideamen - Know the Dance (Rock with a touch of Salsa) http://media.putfile.com/Ideamen---Know-the-Dance Hatrix - Status (Thrashy/Metal) Down - On March the Saints |

Polkadot Cadaver - Brainwash Oh man, boy band... or so it sounds at the start, but I've heard about this band, so it shouldn't be too bad. It has a bit of a laid back pop/rnb beat, sensual bass and high-soft male vocals. Theres a chorus with synth plucked strings and piano. Lyrics seem to be about a girl that makes the guys stop thinking, probably hence brainwash. Another rnb verse and chorus go by and I'm really starting to think it'll stay like this the whole way through. Luckily, it's not bad and definitely not radio material, it just emulates that sound. It has a bit of a Mike Patton feel about it, and I wouldn't be surprised if he was somehow connected to the band. Almost 2 minutes in, the rnb suddenly gives in to some straightforward hard rock guitar and drums for a new chorus. The transition from the rnb is surprisingly smooth, it has basically the same chord progression, which helps. Then after the chorus it gets a bit creepy. The anxiety level builds up very high due to the frequent snare activity. Probably representing that this guy has snapped out of his brainwash for a bit. He's getting angry at this girl.. she never loved him or something, amd he wants revenge while he has the chance. There's a little bit of higher guitar notes that add to the building power. It reaches an almost metal level of heaviness for a few bars.. but then the rnb sneaks back in. Not for too long, though. The hard rock mode comes back and pretty much ends the song after a few repeats. Not bad, not great. There were some interesting transitions between contrasting musical styles, but they were done in a very safe manner. I could listen to this easily, but passively - I wouldn't take that much notice of it when it came on. 7.5/10 ____________________________ A Wilhelm Scream - Dreaming Of Throwing Up .. technical punk Down - Jail .. trippy southern acoustic Gory Blister - The Soul-Slitters .. technical death metal Hanh Nguyen - Loi Ru Cua Me ..
