Single.

Dani California isn't bad, though.

denboy 04-17-2006 08:33 AM
When the song first leaked someone had a link to the pads he used. There insane. Do you really think it's all electric though? Those cymbals and snare don't sound electric to me.
I'm pretty sure he's said that he's gone all electric for this album

Download it. What's the big deal? Unless of course you want to make the album some holy experience, then be disappointed when it's not Lateralus 2.

Don't just call me pessimist.
Try and read between the lines.

The album will still be great, regardless of hearing the single on the radio like most people will have soon anyway. It's the first song, the introduction, the prelude.

Syncratic 04-17-2006 08:35 AM

I heard that he was using a mix of both electric pads and acoustic drums for this album. Perhaps that's the case.

Done.

He did? I thought he said he'd use a lot more electric stuff, not fully though. I could be wrong.

kurrpt 04-17-2006 08:37 AM

i dont think you guys would know the difference honestly;

That's the point. It's amazing how good electric drums are getting.
Although I still think the buildup from 0:38 to 0:46 sounds very "non-real"

So turn your TV/computer off and go on a walk and play it a few times.

(:

well, i think more than the quality of the electric drums, theres so much production involved in a studio album, that you could use POD tones, and they would sound accurate.

kurrpt 04-17-2006 08:51 AM

kurrpt 04-17-2006 09:01 AM

i used a different link, and im JUST NOW listening to the full song.

I was hoping that in 5 years, AJ would learn some mother fukking chops, but i guess not

Turkish 04-17-2006 09:01 AM

Dude, yesterday I had a day off and while I was gaming...I listened to this song back to back like all day.

I can't wait for the cd...it's needs to be released now.

lol, to be honest, if I heard some bluesy or metal (or jazz, or whatever) licks in a Tool song I don't think it would really sound that great, but who knows.

kurrpt 04-17-2006 09:05 AM

i think it would be a nice change to whole note solos ranging about 12-20 bars...

its more of a personal wish i guess

Syncratic 04-17-2006 09:06 AM

What page is this link on? The one that works?

Esoteric_Creator 04-17-2006 09:16 AM

After awhile I get nauseated just reading those forums (TDN), man. I'm damned proud I'm nowhere near being a member of that trash (I would be bombing computers left and right...viruses galore!). Long story short...I would be hated..

The single in my mind is great. Homage, or no homage, the introductory track really hits hard and maybe sets a great first impression for the rest album. I had been waiting for a more aggressive approach, and this single is just a taste of more to come...sweet. You can never know what to expect from Tool..

I still don't understand how people can take the lyrics and say, "They're too damned stupid and simple. WTF?" Wah! I don't think the lyrics are simple at all, but rather straight foreward emotional. They are still metaphorical, but this time I don't think Maynard is trying to leave anyone in the dark anymore about a the message..
I read one person where they were b i t c hing because they didn't understand why Maynard would "want to see things die from a safe distance". (If only I had cyber-punch gizmo, so help me gods) It would be easier to show the 15 yr. old that things aren't always to be taken as first person. What do these teachers teach these kids nowadays..? *shakes fit violently*

Maynard vox is different. Reminds me of Puscifer, but it works well with the single. It's f u c king insane at the end with the final chorus though, because it's old fashioned Maynard..

Is that Adam at the end that shreds with Danny? That was something I never thought could come out of him. Bravo, indeed..! And I must give it up for Justin. He does a mind vibe good..

kurrpt 04-17-2006 09:18 AM

wait, he DOES shred

i didnt get to listen to the last minute of it yet. at work

Esoteric_Creator 04-17-2006 09:23 AM

It sounds like him, unless it's Justin getting creative with the bass..

At the very end of the song Danny goes into this quick (excuse my descriptions. I play by ear and I'm not musically technical at all.) beat, and is accompanied by what sounds like an electric guitar note for beat. I'm guessing that's Adam..

denboy 04-17-2006 09:35 AM

Guitar wise, this is probably the most "technical" Tool song to date.. IMO

Duncster 04-17-2006 09:35 AM

Yeah he plays some pretty fast sixtuplets, nothing to great but its cool, definitely an awesome riff.

Syncratic 04-17-2006 09:36 AM

That shred at the end was nuts. I can definately see why they chose this as the single.

I hope 'The Pot' kicks ***.

kurrpt 04-17-2006 09:38 AM

i would HARDLY characterize that as shred guys

denboy 04-17-2006 09:39 AM
i would HARDLY characterize that as shred guys
Agreed, and it seems mostly legato.
But it's still a step up from anything before

Det_Nosnip 04-17-2006 09:40 AM
I really don't agree about Stinkfist. Doesn't sound anything like Undertow.

Also Vicarious doesn't sound like most of Lateralus aside from The Grudge, which was supposed to be an introduction song right?
It sounded like they were using alot of the same bass/guitar harmonies that they did on Schism, and the intro is somewhat reminiscent.

Anyways, I love the new song.
