Illmatic changed my life.
i'm sure that album changed a few lives, one of the greatest albums of all time imo . . . but even though, i'm not a big fan of the new Nas album . . . maybe i just have to give it a few more listens though . . .

pixiesfanyo 03-08-2007 02:10 PM

okay guys. we get it illmatic is a really good record.

perriwinkle 03-08-2007 03:29 PM

hieroglyphics - third eye vision is incredible thats my current favorite hip hop album

but as far as del himself goes, albums you have to check out are both sides of the brain and i wish my brother george was here (and third eye vision)

future development and no need for alarm are good but id only look into them if you really like all his other stuff first

but yo i want all interested in this thread to check out this very forward hip hop album out, its indie / ambient at times / abstract / whatever / good

fbcfabric & Reindeer - It's Not Who You Know, It's Whom You Know

http://theoryone.encosion.com/fbcfabric%20&%20Reindeer/
"is rap/hip hop dead?" "is rock dead?" "is heavy metal dead?" "is *insert genre here* dead?" questions like these are not only stupid imo, but very cliche almost...i think people who ask these questions haven't really looked hard enough, if it's still going, obviously it isn't dead in the technical sense and those who complain about it, maybe you should do something about it, if you don't like the current state.

It seems we always get these people, spanning from different generations to conjure this phrase as if it was some profound epiphany, which frankly is neither profound nor new, if only this could stifle as it doesn't bring anything new to the table itself and ironically, they have just made themselves apart of the situation, just by questioning it, maybe they should take a look in the mirror, MUSIC will never be 'dead' maybe they should open their eyes, we have access to many types of music and sources, especially in this day and age, it's literally at your fingertips, if you learn how to utilize these sources, perhaps you'll find a a new world of music you never knew existed.

When people ask these questions, what they are telling us is that they have lost their creative touch, imagination and so forth and now they are limited and can't find another angle to approach the specifics of what they are talking about...that is all i have to say
Uh... so you agree with me right?

I was writing about musical progression here. Is rap & hip/hop still progressing, or is it dormant right now? my history of rap isn't too good, but you could see a change from artist to artist back in the day.

Check it:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/r2music/documentaries/rap.shtml

I haven't heard anything totally mindblowing from the rap and hiphop industry lately. Nothing moves me like a good ol 'Hit em Up' or 'Nuthin' But a 'G' Thang'.

Gunit.

perriwinkle 03-08-2007 07:20 PM

personally i dont really enjoy G Unit very much at all, irony aside

you should check out that album that i posted earlier in this page

released last year. thats the kind of hip hop i like

[this part of the post sounded condescending so i edited it out]

Jesusmafia 03-08-2007 09:08 PM

has anyone heard of an artist named Diverse? i just got 'One A.M.' and i'm really diggin' it . . .

pulseczar 03-08-2007 09:13 PM

i heard one of his songs on a soundtrack, it was good.

Joe Beat's Indie Rock Blues. It's a pretentious mix of indie rock and hip-hop, but heh, it's new. Madlib continues to do new things with his work, again not very good but it is new.

haha, haven't heard any G Unit to be honest. I just think it's hilarious (the name), so I have adopted it as my greeting or salutation.

I agree that I don't think Nas' latest offering was too hot compared to his previous albums. It is still a great album though. Lets face it though; Nas is never going to be able to create an album on the same level as Illmatic in much the same way Metallica will never achieve what they achieved on their earlier albums.

I must say that Xzibits new album is one of the best of 2006, I've been waiting for X to the Z to drop something hot again for a while. Everyone should check out his earlier stuff if they haven't already, forget Pimp My Ride, Xzibit is a hip-hop legend.

That song earlier with Rakim, KRS-One, Nas, Kanye West and DJ Premier was as the song title implies "Classic"...Nas is definitely the standout on this track, yet more proof that he is possibly the greatest lyricist of all time.

Rams 03-09-2007 11:37 AM

Both Rakim and KRS-One are better rappers than Nas.

i thought Rakim owned on that track actually . . . although Nas is a legend, i haven't really 'loved' any album since Stillmatic . . .

Pwntendo 03-09-2007 03:52 PM

why are you comparing nas to metallica?

badtaste 03-09-2007 08:39 PM
why are you comparing nas to metallica?
Metallica have set the benchmark of 'St Anger''. Thus, whenever a singer or band do a really shitty album, you just say 'Looks like they did a Metallica' or 'Looks like they did a St Anger'.

I think Rakim's verse was the best on that song. I'd rate the verses like this: Rakim > KRS > Nas > Kanye.

Jesusmafia 03-10-2007 11:44 AM
Both Rakim and KRS-One are better rappers than Nas.
i've been listening to '18th Letter' a lot lately . . . it's such a good album . . .

Rams 03-10-2007 12:33 PM

Rakim is always solid, I just wish he had some albums with more recent beats on them. Eric B. & Rakim can be cool to listen to, but it sounds incredibly dated. While KRS-One and Nas have plenty of stuff with a modern sound to it.

So who here has heard INI yet?

Kyle 03-10-2007 03:27 PM

What do people think of EL-P? I just downloaded I'll Sleep When You're Dead and it's so wierd. Not sure what to make of it yet.

Grohlthegreat 03-10-2007 03:50 PM

Currently listening to Kanye West - Jesus Walks.

The rap/hip-hop i listen to: Kanye, Kano, Sun Zoo, 2Pac, Run DMC, A Tribe Called Quest (And possibly Gym Class Heroes if you can include them).

Amit 03-10-2007 04:09 PM

oh lawrd

All I needs is the instrumental version.

ATM 03-10-2007 05:32 PM

I'll give it a spin very soon. His solo stuff is pretty wierd.

Rams 03-10-2007 06:01 PM

El-P adds nothing to hip-hop.

i listened to this. it isn't forward thinking at all.

it's the same hey look we're making hip-hop legit. but this niche of rappers that is trying to make hip-hop completely different from it's roots is just as bad as the people who are stuck in keeping it the same.

Can you, or anyone, please give me some KRS-one stuff to get, that song is the first time I can recall hearing him, and his delivery and voice are sick. I want some more, please.
