I am going to see The Who again, at Roskilde! :P
|
I saw them when they came to Boston. Such a great band and what a great show. Pete is incredible!
|
I saw them December 2 in Boston. Is that the one you went to?
|
nah i went to the sept 16 show. it was really good.
here is some stuff i found on youtube. omg Trick Of The Light http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=esrl1WZ8o2Q&mode=related&search= Summertime Blues http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6pHWVfxqhzw&mode=related&search= they are from dress rehearsals for the '89 tour. interesting because no crowd is involved. the Trick Of The Light clip is awesome and a rarity, indeed. both clips feature John prominently, of course. also for those who don't know all these clips are easily downloaded with a Firefox extension by the name of DownloadHelper. i have quite the collection of Who clips from youtube now :) |
Hey, what's a good album to start out with?
|
Hard to say. The Who were very different live then on album and vice versa, of course. To start I would go with Who's Next or Quadrophenia. Or a live album such as Live At Leeds or Live At The Isle Of Wright. Others might suggest Tommy to you. I also like the soundtrack to The Kids Are Alright. Its rough but gives a nice overview.
Personally I recommend Quadrophenia. |
My first two albums were Who Are You and Who's Next, mainly because my dad had them on vinyl and I was a huge fan of the two 'hits' off of those albums (Behind Blue Eyes and Who Are You). However, I didn't become that huge of a fan until I was introduced to live Who. Tommy and Quadrophenia really opened up a ton of doors.

Good place to start is everything Townshend, be it Who (all the records expect EW (exluding MPT & GSOMR)/demos/solo/live boots (solo/Who)... :)...
all good to me :) |
I got into them via their greatest hits album. I still only have a few albums and haven't listened to them enough :(
I love "I Can't Explain." I rock out to that song all the time. |

all good to me :)
this is also a good idea. dive into the history of the band. thats what i did when i first got into them. not just because of some longevity but also because of how much ground they covered the first time around. they changed a lot over the years, but still remained "The Who". they have a long and colorful history and all kinds of music around via Townshend, in an out of the band. |
Zak Starkey is the wrong drummer for The Who. at least this tour he has been. he has changed some since starting with them. tbh i prefer Simon Phillips to him, whom i always thought was a good fit. although i think he left the band out of choice i wish he would have stayed.

Zak Starkey is absolutly awesome, I have no clue what you are talking about. Simon Philips is pretty good though, I'd be happy with him as well. Thank god Kenney Jones agreed not to sign on after 1989. |
well kenny didn't play with them in '89, either. it was Phillips.
Starkey of course is a good drummer. but i was listening to the Quad performance and also Royal Albert Hall and he was more dynamic. these days he's more a time keeper then anything else, never pushing the envelope too much. perhaps the loss of john has something to do with it? |

That's what I meant. 89 was the only time Philips played with them if I recall. I'm not too familiar with the Quad or Albert Hall performances, but when I saw them in the fall I felt he was fitting in enough (fitting in with the Who = over the top) |
Very strange, the gig I'm going to see them (again) will probably their second last ...
|
well i guess thats a bit of good news and bad news. i mean i thought this final go 'round was straining the boys but i don't really want them to go away for good :(
|
Mhm yes, but I would be more hapy if I just saw their last, that would be more special :P
|
|
the who grararar
|
They have to do something huge for their last show. Make it a special one that's not part of the current tour and play for 4 hours.
|
^that would be great.
I found this on youtube. its the kids are alright performance of WGFA but it has been recut. apparently this footage is available, and this guy put a new version together. makes you wonder why jeff stein didn't do something closer to this with the film version. the guy even gave it a more "live" sound. the only thing wrong is sometimes Moon isn't synced right. imo its a must see for any Who fan. wow that was ****ing awesome man, thanks for sharing that!
Though I must say they ruined the greatest moment (the Pete slide and Roger scream) the original long slow mo shot was by far better then what they did here. Much more of John though, which was great, and the Pit Cams were awesome. |
the most powerful move in the rockers arsenal

Ok, is it Roger on Helium singing "Armenia city in the sky"?! |

Like, Tommy followed by Quadrophenia and then a best of set? |
oh look a Who thread who put this here?
for their last show they should dig up John and Kieth and do it like it used to be did back in '70. that would be aces. :) seriously though i doubt if anything special will occur. probably bow out garcefully, the Tea & Theater way. fitting i suppose... |
Tea & Theater? You can't be serious.
I didn't even like that as the end of Endless Wire, let alone the band's entire career. I'd rather hear Cobwebs and Strange as the last song. I love that song. Seriously though, my personal choice would probably be something from Quadrophenia. Ending it with something new would be cool too though. I guess Tea & Theater would be the most fitting from Endless Wire, plus it wraps the whole thing up nicely. Too Much of Anything or some other obscure thing would be cool and weird but highly doubtful. |
Long Live Rock, perhaps? i know the guys are up there in years but why they ignore some of the more simpler Who fare like that is beyond me. they have a band that can play just about anything. i suppose they are just comfy doing what they do...
|
I'd actually probably rather they go out on a My Generation or Won't Get Fooled Again number. Maybe smash the instruments one final time.
