Listened to it as couple of times in bed, then I listened to some Opeth. Woke up this morning, put it on while I was layed there. Was great stuff. I really like the song now.
Maynard does sound... older, dosn't he. I wonder if it's the same style through the whole album. I think my post about being on the brink of a load of weirdo's coming into this thread was right on last night. I like how it starts off catchy and descents into more weird stuff, that way they can hook new fans who like the intro and first movement of the song and they'll probably check out the album. Those pitched percussion instruments add so much to the sound, it's the perfect way of expanding upon the guitar and bass sound without getting a new member. I love how the guitar cuts out and leaves the bass and drums and vocals, it's so simple and tons of bands do it, but Tool does it so well. I adore the part where Maynard sings about the ocean and shot by his own son, it remind me of those pictures of Adam by the sea with the dead body from that guitar world (?) article. Fancy stuff. Oh, and I like the part where Maynard says "so, why don't we just end it" or something like that, and the drums and bass carry the pattern for a few bars, then the snare comes in. Very cleverly done, and nice rhythm too, the sounds natural the more you listen to it. It's like having an old friend back again. This is probably the catchiest 7 minute song i've ever heard. And I have to say, at first, this song didn't kick me in the teeth, I was in disbelief, and it grew on me more over time. It is a great song.
that bit about the ocean is so awsome aye...yeah the song didnt kick me in the teeth either but its had a good 27 plays so i like:smoke: |
I like the alarm bell type sound. I was going to include this in a song myself, most people are classically conditioned to understand what bell sounds mean from being young, ie: Pay attention, leave for break time, lesson ends, dogs salivate for food, etc.
Good stuff. Man, I've listened to it 12 times now, and I have a craving to listen to it again. I don't want to overplay this, but I can see myself listening to it 100 times or so before the albums out, and I really shouldn't let myself do that, i'll end up skipping it when the album comes out, and I don't want to do that. |
Its good reading all these positive reactions. Im looking forward to monday more and more now.

OMFG IT WAS SOO GOOD....QUICKEST 7 MINS OF MY LIFE.
So i loved it, the drums suprised me at points with the fills, i was sitting and smiling. I can kinda see the polyrhythmic feel with the bass and guitars, it sounds almost like a continuation of the sound left by reflection. Which is kinda how tool do stuff, the songs at the end of the album lead on to the next, no? I just have a little gripe with maynards vox. In tool he's always at the front of the mix, blaring out. Now i know we were told this wasn't to be the case on this album but i felt he just sounded back in the mix quite a bit, i struggled to hear him most of the time. It almost felt like i was listening to maynard in APC or dare i say it puscifer? I'm not saying this is definatley a bad thing it was just something that caught me off gaurd, i'm sure i'll grow to love it. And yeah i do agree he does sound older. |

I really really like the title vicarious, now that I know the lyrics to the song.. (And I absolutely love the song.. Wow, first eargasm I've had in way too long)
I still hold the belief that all the other titles are fake though :p |
It's definately one of the better track titles, though I can see how the titles are real. Tool have dropped the Lateralus spirituality. The lyrics remind me of the more "down to earth" moments on Undertow or Ænima. Down to earth for Tool anyway, if you get what I mean.
Hooker with a Penis, Prison Sex, Stinkfist. These track titles are less silly in some ways. Though I wouldn't be very suprised or disappointed if the titles did change. They'll grow on me, either way. Oh, as for the vocals, they've grown on me now. I think part of the reason the song didn't kick me in the balls was because of the vocals, but I quite like them, something new, fresh. It's like Maynard sounds tired of trying to get his point across after Lateralus in that way, and is becoming more down to earth in his explainations. He just sounds older and almost tired, and that suits the track well. |

I couldn't give a flying f'uck about the titles. If the music is this good throughout the album I think i'll be satisfied. But TBH can anyone see vicarious being the best song on the album? Was schism the ebst song on lateralus? I think not...The bets is yet to come (i hope) :D
|
Exactly. This is the commercial track. I'm sure we'll get off more on some of the more experimental stuff. I can't wait!
|
I don't care much about the titles at all either. It just seems like it would be a great joke if all but the single was fake titles
|
The big joke would have been to change the tracklist for april fools to some 'tool-ish' names....and let it stand untill it leaked with the real titles...
There's noway they could match the mayhem that would cause now so i think we should be in the clear. Ears down, listen in :) |
didnt maynard say hes had enough of tryna send messages to people...
|
Just listening to the song... Sounds great so far.
|
Who gives a sh!t about messages.
Just listen to the music. There's just so much going on. Listen to the song on repeat 4 times. Each time listen to a different member of the band. Justin is the hardest but each listen is just soo cool. /Has the single in losless format  |

Yeah but messages are for when you know the song inside out...
Anyone else amused by the circumstances of the leak? The FTP server where the radio stations were downloading their copies from got hacked while it was unprotected for a few minutes. God i love tool fans... |
The riff dosn't seem as memorable as most Tool songs, thats my only complaint right now.
*Bangs head uncontrolably to heavy part* As for messages, it's clear it's about turning off your television, or, at least addressing the fact that people live Vicariously through their televisions. I'd say there was a big fat politcial overtone of the war and watching people die in the "theater of war", rather than an undertone, but there's obviously more to the song than that. The end of the song it becomes clear it's also about general human emotions and desires, and suggests that we need to change. |

Or someone in the company wanted it to leak to their friends.
|
Yeah they probably did. They didn't stream it on toolband this time. It seems like an appripriate thing to do, especially if Blair said to watch out for leaks. But if the story on TDN is correct someone was trying to get onto that server, then when the loophole opened BAM!.

People are so smart with that sorta stuff these days hey |
Actually it was as simple as there being no password on the website for the link to the single in .wav format.. No hacking, no nothing.. Just some guy who forwarded a link, and then it spread like wildfire
|
If you need more proof that the leak was deliberate: http://www.zombalabelgroup.com/tool/Vicarious.wav.zip .. The link even still works
|

new it was delibrate lol:smash: case closed |
Deliberate, yes, but by who? You can't say whether it was the band or someone at the label, or someone who runs the website. I don't know, and frankly it dosn't matter. :p
Furthermore, I like the idea of "half vampire" "half warrior" etc, and his words are almost half formed. Another clever little artistic statement. |
it doesnt matter indeed as long as i have vicarious for awhile i might delete it soon so i dont get sick of it
|
I downloaded the .wav and burned it onto a cd, so I can listen to it on my dads awesome bose 5.1 sound system
