What is a good Depeche Mode album to start off with?
I hear good things about Violator

sadly, a band I have thoroughly neglected. Personal Jesus is a great song though

Does Strapping Young Lad count?
Does Strapping Young Lad count? I'm not really well versed in this type of music at all.
No, not really. Besides the big bass drops and keyboards.. No. Although Devin Townsend does do some weird shit on his own..
more experimental than industrial though.

Meatplow 08-30-2010 01:43 AM

thanks for that, lol

City was pretty highly influenced by Foetus I hear. don't really care much for it

Meatplow 08-31-2010 08:29 AM
What is a good Depeche Mode album to start off with?
well there is the "old" depeche mode and the "new". You've probably heard the new stuff a lot on the radio etc. If you want those stuff get Violator and Playing the Angel. If you want the old synth poppy stuff get A Broken Frame and/or Some Great Reward.

Meatplow 09-03-2010 08:34 PM

Not bad, Chris. I prefer that side of Skinny Puppy than the stuff I am accustomed to.

that was very nice Chris

I always assumed Vangelis to be more cheesy and european synth ballads or something

Meatplow 09-03-2010 09:27 PM

Throbbing Gristle's Heathen Earth is really fucking good

DBlitz 09-03-2010 11:13 PM

i need more stuff like The Field

also just listened to Music for Airports quite recently and really liked that

Meatplow 09-03-2010 11:16 PM

have you heard much Brian Eno?

Another Green World and Discreet Music are my favourites, it is hard to go wrong though.

DBlitz 09-03-2010 11:25 PM

i listened to Another Green World once but maybe i wasn't in the mood for it or something. i'll revisit it. that's the only other Eno i've heard. i'll check out that other one you mentioned :)

feav233 09-03-2010 11:35 PM

i keep meaning to listen to more brian eno

Meatplow 09-04-2010 08:14 AM

all his stuff is so good, i'm glad I forced my way through most of his discography as initially I didn't think I would like him at all

first couple of albums are more Bowie style prog/glam rock though, Another Green World is a sort of turning point from that

Bitchfork 09-04-2010 11:04 PM

meaty likes wold

Meatplow 09-04-2010 11:05 PM

Guys, prease checking this out, it's a really good friend of mine's dark ambient/noise project, and it's REALLY fucking good.

Another Green World is literally an inflection point in Eno's career, and I think that's why it's interesting. It adds an interesting element to his original Bowie-esque sound (e.g. the keyboard line behind the chorus in St. Elmo's Fire) and features some of his best compositions (e.g. The Big Ship, which I can listen on repeat for a long time).

Discreet Music is probably my favorite ambient release of his I've heard, though I also quite like the stuff with Fripp as well.

Probability says there is some good techno in existence. That doesn't mean that I know of it, though.

You're in statistics, maaaaaaaaaaan.

As an aside:
Meatplow, where did you find that Ilsa picture in your avatar?
