I didn't hear much to be honest :( But Im kinda glad, I didn't want any 5:7 haha.
The verses sound a tad 'shuggah, and yes the breakdown did too.

PinkFreud 04-15-2006 01:30 AM

I hear a lot of King Crimson in the parts where it's just the guitar playing the odd-time riff repeatedly. I like. A lot.

Sleeper 04-15-2006 01:30 AM

What i like most about Meshuggah is the use of the china cymbal, I wonder if Danny is going to be using alot of that. I'm sure the Meshuggah influence was pretty exaggerated.

Huber 04-15-2006 01:33 AM
This new single is really great. I love the vocals around 6:30.
That part is the best part of the song I think.

Futuro 04-15-2006 01:33 AM

Sorry if I missed it, but are these drums all electric?

Sleeper 04-15-2006 01:38 AM
Sorry if I missed it, but are these drums all electric?
No, he has a pretty big set up and like 3 to 4 pads.

Futuro 04-15-2006 01:39 AM
Sorry if I missed it, but are these drums all electric?
He doesn't use electronics for drum sounds. But they don't sound like his bubingas thats for sure. With that much transient attack they are probably his paiste cast kit.

Huber 04-15-2006 01:40 AM
No, he has a pretty big set up and like 3 to 4 pads.
Good, because I like the Sonor Hybrid kit, a lot.

Sleeper 04-15-2006 01:40 AM

Dosen't he use electronics for the beginning of Stinkfist and part of Pushit?

Futuro 04-15-2006 01:43 AM
Dosen't he use electronics for the beginning of Stinkfist and part of Pushit?
Yes, But what I meant by that is he would never replace his snare drum with an electric snare sound. get me?
Good, because I like the Sonor Hybrid kit, a lot.
It isn't the same kit I don't think. Compare the verse of Lateralus to Vicarious.

Sleeper 04-15-2006 01:46 AM
Yes, But what I meant by that is he would never replace his snare drum with an electric snare sound. get me?
Yes, thanks for clearing that up for me.

PinkFreud 04-15-2006 01:47 AM

He's not replacing his acoustic kit with entirely electronic drums. He's just incorporating the electronics a bit more, I think.

Sleeper 04-15-2006 01:50 AM

I hope he does include them more, usually my favorite drumming parts from Tool have electronics like the main beat for Reflection.

Futuro 04-15-2006 01:54 AM

Well his Paiste kit and Bubinga are both there. So I would say he probably used both on different songs across the album.

He always has a fantastic drum sound (Sans Pygmy love circus)

His purple pads are so cool.

PinkFreud 04-15-2006 02:02 AM

Yer, I made the mistake of buying a Pygmy Love Circus cd. It was bad. Real bad.

Sleeper 04-15-2006 02:04 AM

I could never get into them.

Futuro 04-15-2006 02:07 AM

Mandalas. 1 cost 1000 dollars

http://synesthesiacorp.com/home.html

Watch some videos. Very cool.

In the third video he shows off the configurable zones. So one pad, can create thousands of different combos of sounds.

Sleeper 04-15-2006 02:10 AM

Now those are nice.

toolfreak 04-15-2006 02:59 AM

lol wow they are nice i wish i had a kit like that lol

toolfreak 04-15-2006 03:18 AM

Don't flame me for this because i dont think this is true but wouldnt it be funny if vicarious was the only track that was real of the tracklistings and then the rest changed lol

download it, you'll end up listening to it 10 000 times

Shadius 04-15-2006 04:53 AM

Listened to it as couple of times in bed, then I listened to some Opeth. Woke up this morning, put it on while I was layed there. Was great stuff. I really like the song now.

Maynard does sound... older, dosn't he. I wonder if it's the same style through the whole album.

I think my post about being on the brink of a load of weirdo's coming into this thread was right on last night.

I like how it starts off catchy and descents into more weird stuff, that way they can hook new fans who like the intro and first movement of the song and they'll probably check out the album. Those pitched percussion instruments add so much to the sound, it's the perfect way of expanding upon the guitar and bass sound without getting a new member. I love how the guitar cuts out and leaves the bass and drums and vocals, it's so simple and tons of bands do it, but Tool does it so well.

I adore the part where Maynard sings about the ocean and shot by his own son, it remind me of those pictures of Adam by the sea with the dead body from that guitar world (?) article. Fancy stuff.

Oh, and I like the part where Maynard says "so, why don't we just end it" or something like that, and the drums and bass carry the pattern for a few bars, then the snare comes in. Very cleverly done, and nice rhythm too, the sounds natural the more you listen to it.

It's like having an old friend back again. This is probably the catchiest 7 minute song i've ever heard.

And I have to say, at first, this song didn't kick me in the teeth, I was in disbelief, and it grew on me more over time. It is a great song.

The Flabbit Rides High 04-15-2006 05:21 AM

Apprently there was gonna be some Fantomas influence as well.

Anyone see it?
