///trying to decide what album to do my first review on....

Hey guys, what do you think of this: I'm thinking about going about the writing process completely differently next time around. Maybe not necessarily a concept album, but getting the lyrics, artwork, title, etc. all created before I write a single note of music, perhaps to help facilitate a different sound, better mood, better flowing album, and perhaps even something completely different musically than what I have done.

Basically, revolving the sound and feel of the music completely around a certain mood or theme after I've created it, as opposed to what I've been doing, which was setting out to write a specific style of music and then adding lyrics and art to it.

Deth 12-11-2007 08:52 PM

I always think that would be incredibly hard to do. Also, it puts the concept and lyrics ahead of the actual music, which is treading dangerous ground.

But why not give it a shot.

Valhall 12-11-2007 08:53 PM

Treading dangerous ground? I'm not following.

NemesisDivina 12-11-2007 08:53 PM

For your first review, you should probably do an album that you're really familiar and have already formed an opinion on.

@BRA

cool username btw

Are we allowed to do reviews on album that have leaked but aren't released yet?

Thanks, btw.

Deth 12-11-2007 08:55 PM

My general belief is that the actual music should be the main concern when writing, as opposed to moods, lyrics, concepts etc. By putting those things at the forefront, the music is getting marginalized and maybe compromised at the price of the overall concept.

Just my two cents.

EDIT: Also, you can't review leaked albums.

Oh, damn. Ok.

Thanks for your input, definitely.

Deth 12-11-2007 08:58 PM

But then there's Opeth's My Arms, Your Hearse, which is brilliant. But I'm sure it was a bitch to write.

I would give it a go and see how it ends up, but I wouldn't hold too much faith in creating better music that way. Better lyrics maybe.

Tyler 12-11-2007 08:58 PM

I'm trolling some other forum and oh man, I've never seen such tools in my life. One guy made a thread called, and I quote, "Polyrhythmic Instrumental Jazz Metal". And get this: he was totally ****ing serious!

The clicher, of course, is that the band is just some shitty second rate Meshuggah knock off.

NemesisDivina 12-11-2007 09:00 PM

Meshuggah are already second rate.

Wow, that's a terrible forum. MX ftw.

Nostalgia 12-11-2007 09:00 PM

Ultimate-Guitar is the funnest to troll. I've used at least 5 e-mails to be able to register there, but it's totally worth it.

Angmar 12-11-2007 09:01 PM

Did you respond? If so what did you say? :p

Tyler 12-11-2007 09:01 PM

First there was a thread about how Hate Eternal is the best technical brutal death band, and when I saw this "Polyrhythmic Instrumental Jazz Metal" thread I just couldn't take it anymore.

superpeer 12-11-2007 09:12 PM

lol oh no genre names!

ATM 12-11-2007 09:14 PM

You know you are the 1337|\|355 when the biggest tools ever are people who make up their own labels as opposed to other people's made up labels

gmoneyguy 12-11-2007 09:15 PM
