oh ya how'd that go by the way? Have you heard anything about it yet?
Yeah we "passed" or whatever the term is. The actual thing is on June 8th. I've gotta write two songs by then apparently, and then we gotta practice them. I have a feeling it's gonna be mostly improvised.

wanton 05-23-2005 10:10 PM

Could anyone list all the instruments Ian Anderson plays? Please.

There's nothing quite like winging a song.

Oh Good God! I posted them a while back in a Jethro Tull thread, but there are about 20 different instruments. I went through all my Tull albums and wrote down all the instruments he played, he's probably played much more since then though, because I only have their vinyl albums.

Vocals (obviously)
Flute
Acoustic Guitar
Mandolin
Whistles (Songs from the Wood)
Drums (Under Wraps)
Hammond Organ
Piano
Harmonica
Balalaika (WTF is that?...from Stand Up)
Violin (Thick as a Brick)
Saxophone (Thick as a Brick)
Trumpet (Thick as a Brick)

That's what I gathered from about five or six albums. I know Tull released about 30 albums, so there are probably much more.

I did a search found it:
Alright, let me prove how amazing Ian Anderson is...

Not only did he write 95 percent of the lyrics and most of the music, he also played:

Vocals (obviously)
Flute
Acoustic Guitar
Mandolin
Whistles (Songs from the Wood)
Drums (Under Wraps)
Hammond Organ
Piano
Harmonica
Balalaika (WTF is that?...from Stand Up)
Violin (Thick as a Brick)
Saxophone (Thick as a Brick)
Trumpet (Thick as a Brick)

And that's just what he played on the few albums I own...they had over forty albums between 1968 and 1999.
I knew he played a lot but I didn't know what he played.

Thanks Thickasabrick.

thickasabrick 05-23-2005 10:34 PM

I beat you. But good effort nonetheless. How come you need this info so desperately?

And may I be the nerd to point out we were just on page 1337.

Seafroggys 05-23-2005 11:17 PM
I remember a couple weeks ago we played Sunshine of Your Love for some audition thing...

My drummer (who mainly plays punk type music) was like "the drum part is all messed up, he always just keeps hitting random notes after he plays the normal beat"

I then had to explain the concept of a drum fill. (and contemplated getting a new drummer)
Hah, most 'drummers' these days are like that. And besides, the normal beat for that song definitly ain't your standard 2 and 4 punk either :D

Illmatic 05-23-2005 11:21 PM

I don't think there are drum fills in punk music...isn't it just bashing everything mindlessly?

pardon my ignorance.

ATM 05-24-2005 12:18 AM
No, unfortunately. My friends saw someone (I forget who) there a couple weeks ago and it was great.
I just saw Porcupine Tree there, and it was incredible.

I wouldn't expect a comment like this from you, man.

What's that supposed to mean?

Either way my comment was half-tongue-in-cheek.

Happy 63rd Bob Dylan! :smoke: :chug:

/bump

Badmoon 05-24-2005 12:41 PM

Horray!!

Because of this, I will now listen to some of the Byrds' better renditions of Bob Dylan originals.

lunch998 05-24-2005 01:17 PM

You were going to do that anyway.

magicbus 05-24-2005 01:19 PM

Moon, after listening to Anthem of the Sun, and watching Festival Express (I liked both very much), I think I'll give American Beauty another shot. You might have converted me with that Anthem of the Sun upload.

Well, their performance of "Ease Me In" is no surprise; it is fantastic. But you getting into them through Anthem of the Sun is. You are one of the few.

If you ever need a Dead album, just ask and I'll send you it.

Badmoon 05-24-2005 01:23 PM

That's cause I'm ahead of the game.

lunch998 05-24-2005 01:23 PM

I'm a pretty big Dead fan I guess, but I still don't see the huge deal about American Beauty. I like it and all, but I don't think of it as their crowning acheivment and one of the best records ever. Workingman's Dead is much better, in my opinion.

Badmoon 05-24-2005 01:25 PM

If you ask me, Workingman's Dead is 100% perfect; every track is wonderful.

American Beauty is not, however it does have some fantastic moments. My favorite section ofAmerican Beauty would have to be "Ripple" and "Brokedown Palace"; two amazingly beautiful songs, back to back.

:)
I'm a pretty big Dead fan I guess
That's good to hear.

Alright thanks. I want to check out Workingman's Dead also, but not till later today because I'm going to work soon.

Badmoon 05-24-2005 01:28 PM

Any of you guys know what song the lyrics on my usertitle are from?

Possibly the Dead's second best song (IMO). And it was never recorded.

At first I didn't really like songs like "High Time" and "Black Peter" as much, but I just listened to the album and loved each track. American Beauty certainly has high points, but not as consistently good as WD.
That's good to hear
I thought you knew this, at least a little bit.

Brown Eyed Women, I think. For some reason that song stuck out in my mind when I read them.

If thats true, what is it on? I remember hearing that song a couple times at my cousins house, he's a big Dead fan. But I never remember where he got it from.

Same here. I also love those songs greatly now, especially "Black Peter. It's a very sad/eerie track.
I thought you knew this, at least a little bit.
Yea, but you admitted it.

Very nice :thumb:. I love the lyrics and melodies to that song, especially the verses.

lunch998 05-24-2005 01:36 PM

I see now that it's on Dick's Picks 20. That has an impressive track list, maybe I'll check it out eventually.
I see now that it's on Dick's Picks 20. That has an impressive track list, maybe I'll check it out eventually.
Yeah, Dick's Picks 4 is really good too.

Top three Grateful Dead Songs (attempt)

1. Pride Of Cucamonga (never played live  )
2. Brown Eyed Women
3. He's Gone

Number three was a hard choice.

lunch998 05-24-2005 01:51 PM

I have Vol. 23, it's pretty good.

I don't think I could pick a top 3.

TheDMV 05-24-2005 01:53 PM

Does every Dead's pick album have diffrent tracks? Some must have repeats.

lunch998 05-24-2005 01:57 PM

Yea there are a lot of repeats.

Moon, could you send me From the Mars Hotel sometime?

Badmoon 05-24-2005 01:58 PM
I have Vol. 23, it's pretty good.

So do I, that is actually the only one I actually own, though I've heard more.

And Dick's Picks are live albums, so there is of course repeated tracks. But sometimes there are some odder originals and covers.

Badmoon 05-24-2005 01:59 PM
Yea there are a lot of repeats.

Moon, could you send me From the Mars Hotel sometime?
I'll send it to you right now if I can find it.

Give me a second.

Earlier speaking about Who covers and now talking about the Dead, I have a cover of Bab O'Riley done by the Dead.

JPJ, how'd you like that Govt Mule bootleg? Its a perfect reason to vote Allen Woody.

lunch998 05-24-2005 03:07 PM

I just got the Kids Are Alright, I'm excited to watch it.
I just got the Kids Are Alright, I'm excited to watch it.
I am dying to get that dvd. I got the soundtrack on vinyl for 2 bucks. I want to see Moon explode his drum set on the Smothers Brothers show..it's cool on the album, because you hear some polite clapping when they're done My Generation, then this thunderous boom drowns out everything.

thickasabrick 05-24-2005 03:55 PM

I noticed last night on Southpark, Jerry Garcia was in hell. And quite possibly the other members of the Grateful Dead.

Does Southpark have something against the Grateful Dead? Because I've noticed they have made a few jabs at them in various episodes.

Badmoon 05-24-2005 04:00 PM

They're against Hippies. So whatever.

While on the subject, other than doing a lot of drugs and being on the road a lot, the Grateful Dead are hardly Hippies judging by today's standards. They weren't politically active, they didn't usually write songs about peace, and they weren't vegetarians nor vegans.
