For me it's always worth it to listen to the whales having sex part in order to get through to the other side. Because when they come back in and start building up the song gets incredible. It's the dynamics of the part that in the song which make it so interesting.

Yield 12-03-2006 04:18 PM

It's such a sudden change for when they go back to the vocals at that part, it's so awesome imo.

Lunch 12-03-2006 04:19 PM

Gilmour's guitar interlude or whatever you call it is what makes it for me.

rippa32 12-03-2006 07:55 PM

Ive actually heard the Pompeii version and much prefer it. I can see what you mean by adding ambience but when its only whales and no other music it seems rather pointless and in the case of echoes long. Not that Im against long songs, its that particular bit goes on for a bit.

btw Are you sure it's whales having sex? I just assumed plain old whale noises.

Leper 12-04-2006 06:16 PM

I think I prefer the live at Pompeii version of every song...even the ones they didn't do...that's how great it is.

magicbus 12-04-2006 06:17 PM

It's not necessarily whales having sex. I think Gilmour was just making creepy noises with his wah pedal, and we've just likened it to whales having sex.

I prefer the Live At Pompeii version also. The solo is sooo good.

Yield 12-04-2006 06:53 PM

I think I'll for the DVD of The Wall and Live At Pompeii for Christmas, or else I'll get one myself.

His wah pedal? Really? I always thought it was pre recorded whale noises. Im going to have to listen to echoes again now.

magicbus 12-04-2006 08:13 PM

Yea it's all wah. He switched the input and output cables going to his wah and he got a weird high pitched squealy noise.

My roommate and I were doing it last time we jammed. You can change the squeal with the volume knob and pickup selector.

Oh yeah, it is wah. I remember reading that in the floyd biography. :)

So what do you mean? The output from you're guitar into the output of the wah?

magicbus 12-05-2006 08:30 AM

You plug your guitar cable into the wah's output jack, and the cable from your amp into the wah's input jack, as opposed to switched around (the way it is supposed to go).

My roommate has a Vox wah pedal, but my Dunlop Crybaby Classic didn't do it, so that might play a part in it too.

I know it probably wouldn't happen, but for some reason I'd be afraid of getting electrocuted or something.:(

Lunch 12-05-2006 06:39 PM

Lucky for us David Gilmour isn't a little bitch.

:p

:upset:

I'll stick with trusty low-risk drums.:)

Edit: That's it, no more RMOTM nominations/votes for you!

Lunch 12-05-2006 06:52 PM

Fine, I never win anyway!

I decided today that Echoes was easily one of the greatest songs of all time. And I know this is controversial ITT or whatever, but it really is (one of) my favorite song to be fucked up to. Just perfect.

magicbus 12-05-2006 06:53 PM

I played along with Echoes today. What an awesome jam. I mean I was playing perfectly.

rippa32 12-05-2006 07:55 PM

Mmm actually thats a damn good idea. Itd be easier if there was a way to remove Gimours lead guitar out of it first so you're not competing with it.

magicbus 12-05-2006 08:00 PM

Yea that would be cool. I could probably find a backing track somewhere.

Danger Bird 12-06-2006 01:07 AM

I like Echoes, and I can see why it stands out, being 23 minutes and fairly epic in nature, but I don't think it's necessarily Floyd's best. It is good though. Careful With That Axe, Eugene is better.

rippa32 12-06-2006 06:33 PM

I like the solo on Careful and the atmoshperic keyboards are damn cool.

MattSharpIsCool 12-06-2006 07:00 PM

Careful With That Axe, Eugene is probably the only song on LaP that I dont like better than the album version. I think the whispering Roger does in the video is a bit much, but its still alright.

That's true, it's much creepier when all you hear from an actual voice is "careful with that axe eugene..." and then...

"AAAAAAARGGGGHHHH!!!!!!"

rippa32 12-07-2006 12:51 AM

I must get Live At Pompeii, it was second on my DVD's to get list after Rainbow Live At Munich, which I now have. Now the problem will be finding a shop that stocks Pink Floyd DVD's that arn't Pulse.

MattSharpIsCool 12-07-2006 12:54 AM

I got mine at Best Buy, try there.

I think it was the only one they had though.

rippa32 12-07-2006 01:09 AM

Whats a Best Buy? I don't think we have them in Australia.
Whats a Best Buy? I don't think we have them in Australia.
It's a big electronics shopping center that doesn't have crazy expensive prices. It also has a pretty good selection of music, so you can find things you usually wouldn't find at a big store.

MattSharpIsCool 12-07-2006 06:42 PM
Whats a Best Buy? I don't think we have them in Australia.
Oh I didnt even think to look where you lived. You might not have them there, but ya, they've got a pretty decent selection of music and what-not, and they're usually a lot cheaper than other "big" stores.

Yield 12-07-2006 06:56 PM

Best Buys are great!

But the used book store where I get my cd's is cheaper, I just wish they didn't run out of good stuff so fast.

MattSharpIsCool 12-07-2006 07:00 PM

I buy all my crap at Best Buy.

I'm hopefully getting a record player for christmas though, and if I do....well they dont sell those at best buy, so I'll have to find somewhere else.

Yield 12-07-2006 07:10 PM

They had ones at Target, and I was intrigued, but then I soon realized that it was a five in one stereo (Tape, Record, Cd, AM, FM radio) and considering it was one hundred dollars at Target. I didn't get it

Now I'm trying to figure out which is better: Pawn Shop or New?

MattSharpIsCool 12-07-2006 07:17 PM

For a record player? Do they jazz up the new ones at all, or are they the same thing as the older ones?

Hamilcar 12-07-2006 09:15 PM

I got my record player at the Salvation Army for $6 and it works just fine.

rippa32 12-08-2006 12:42 AM

I say second hand, most new one's are tailored for DJ's or audiophile. The DJ ones have a direct drive system rather than belt drive which not only costs more but adds noise. And the audiophile ones are $1000+ for the tiniest little thing that the ear really couldn't tell the difference anyway.

LF96 12-08-2006 06:15 AM

If it's just for listening, get an old second hand one. You can't change needles on old ones most of the time though, because they don't produce needles like that anymore, so if your needle is broken you're in trouble.
I've got a dj-turntable, but got it pretty cheap (second hand, for half of the original price), sound quality is good and I can change my needle very easily.
But overall, I'd say, go for a second hand one, them needles don't break down that easy.

rippa32 12-08-2006 06:55 AM

I have one thats very old and I can get a needle easily. But shop around, alot of Hi-Fi places will charge about $40-$60 for your average needle, whereas as this independant electronics store near where I live only charged me $25. Also research what the standard price is for a needle of the turntable youre looking to buy, not very many but some will sell for about $100.

There are still some good ones in production, like my Song PLXSsomething. And direct drive's not that bad. I used to have a great direct drive Dual.

Oh, dude, get a Dual off ebay. They're so nice.

Aussie Pink Floyd were in Montreal yesterday.

Best show of my entire life.

rippa32 12-08-2006 07:24 PM

Well I'm seeing Roger in February and I should check out Aussie Pink Floyd when they come back to see how they compare. Your not the only one to say their good though.
