I try not to get into the habit of downpicking all the time, because if you get used to it alternate can become a bugger to get back into
|
I think the Master Of Puppets riff is easy to downpick because it doesn't just stay on one string. For some reason that seems to make it easier.

I know what you mean...I had that problem before and it sucked to back in the habit. But its not the same anyways since I had tendonitis |
You should downpick if at all possible, and only alt. pick when necessary. Downpicking sounds much more precise and accurate. Master of Puppets should be downpicked, or else it will sound sloppy after a while. Start slow, and speed up. Speed before accuracy.
|
I downpick when necessary, but if your a lead player i think its more practical to alternate pick
|
when playing leads, yeah. But for rhythem playing(MOP verse) downpicking sounds a lot better.
|
Since we're on the subject of helping out with picking. I recently decided it was time for me to learn the last solo in Welcom Home (Sanitarium). So anyways, I have it down pretty good. But the beggining with all the picking of the 12th fret. I have a hard time picking that fast and counting my number of picking in my head. Any advice. I'm thinking about just practicing with my metronome.

Don't you mean "accuracy before speed?" |
It all about whats easier at the moment. If down-picking works better in a certain part then use it.
|
Don't you mean "accuracy before speed?"
I think he does. You want to start off slow and perfect so you can speed it up. Perfect practice makes perfect. You don't want to try and be fast while learning it because you'll just be sloppy and it'll take longer to get it down right. |

I think if you make some alternate picking exercises for yourself and keep at them until your comfortable with playing them fast. I did, and now i dont even have to think about alternate picking at that speed. Or just play that first bit slowly, then build up etc |
Everyone agrees Load and Reload were a let down. I think Kill 'Em All and Ride the Lightning, even Master of Puppets and And Justice for All, to an except captured the essence of their really heavy thrash era. After that, I wouldn't call Black Album thrash even though it is excellent.
I disagree I am afraid, I love Fixxxer, Fuel, Memory remains, Outlaw torn (Favourite song) And many more.... |

123...Load and Reload are Metallica's diamond in the rough. |
This is for jimmypageguitarhero dude, on the subject of playing MOP. Its used to tire the hell outta me. So i would suggest breaking it up..as w/ most songs that have parts or r that freakin long. Also make sure u play most of the song w/ little to no reverb and palm-mute it all, except for solo of course and myabe parts of the chorus. Great song of course, still gets me some onlookers or approached by some at Guitar Center, ROCK On!! btw, the mid-solo was my first real solo(P.S. thats the part where u want to turn ur reverb up to atleast 5 or 6 i like it at like 7 myself, it sounds huge) which i can play both parts, including kirk's harmony I mean. And basically just pick as hard and fast as u can until it sounds right, keeping in mind that the changes r really quick and its all really tight. Good Luck!

I am accually a drummer but I have got a guitar, I can play all Master of puppets (Excluding the 1st solo) But I play it alot slower, since I learned it though I have been speeding up with practice... I downstroke on all my playing I find it easier, I also often play my guitar like a bass (With fingers) |

You know when you listen to a song enough times that you know every part of and you can start and finish every riff off exactly. Just get the song playing along with you in your head. I guess thats what I've always been able to do was keeping in time without a metronome and just pretty much knowing how the song went right off the bat. |
hey guys i was thinking of buying a new metallica album
right now i have ...AJFA, MoP, RtL, K'eA, and Black Album- any recommendations on any other good albums? |
I enjoy S&M, Garage Inc., Load, Reload, and St. Anger
So there ya go...take your pick |
I can't play the beginning riff of Puppets on bass right, at all..not with a pick or fingers. With fingers I go too slow and with a pick I can't get it right at all because I can't downpick fast at all, and I can't alternate pick it because I'm too slow. :(
|
So you can't pick it at all? Practice?

Yeah, I was thinking about doing that. I guess that's what I'm going to try. |

When finger picking try just using your index for the E and your middle for the A. It works well for me. |
And to burtonbassist, they will never, ever perform orion live, nor have they ever as far as I know.
Something bugs me about that. Jason was a good bassist. Certainly better than he gets credit for, and certainly better than me. Metallica wouldn't have a bad bassist... If I can play Orion, why wouldn't Jason be able to? Its not actually very hard.
:smash: |
I also think it was required that when bass players auditioned they learnt every Metallica song up to that point, i remember reading somewhere they asked him what he wanted to play, to which he replied "anything".

Me too but just don't tell my bassist that. |
