Is one of the two really preferable over the other one? I mean I've always grown up using the metric system, but I would guess that if I'd have grown up using the imperial system, that would've been equally usable, right?

We actually use a bit of a hybrid. Ask me my height and weight in metric and you'll get a blank stare, but we use KM, Celsius, etc.
