Illmatic 05-17-2005 02:38 PM

Hey, while we're on the subject of Jim Morrison, does anyone have the songs he did with Hendrix?

Broken Arrow 05-17-2005 02:46 PM
I'll buy all the ablums once they throw them into the "2 for" or "3 for" deals. I have almost done that with the Beatles. I now have Rubber Soul, Sgt. Pepper, Let it Be, Abbey Road, and Magical Mystery tour. ;)
Yeah Doors albums are always 3 for $20 which is amazing becasue Beatles Albums are usually $19-$22 each.

Except I did find a $30 for 2 Beatles albums sale once and I bought MMT and Revolver.

Leper 05-17-2005 02:51 PM

ya i've bought all my beatles albums in the 2 for 30 deals, except magical mystery tour, which is a vinyl. Where i live Beatles albums are like $25 each!!! The White Album is $29!! I was pretty happy though finding the doors and clapton in the 2 for 25 section.

Was that at HMV? I think I saw that sale when I was in Ottawa, my sister wouldn't stop bitching becuase she could have gotten With the Beatles and Yellow Submarine on DVD for 30$ and my dad wouldn't buy it. Yeah.

Leper 05-17-2005 02:57 PM

Mine was at HMV..

TheDMV 05-17-2005 05:06 PM
I bought the best of the Doors.......than I bought all the albums.

*sigh*
I've bought too many compilations in my day. :upset:
I've been listening to Workingman's Dead lately (I'm trying to cover "Cumberland Blues"). And I realized that this is one of the few perfect (IMO) albums I have ever heard. Which would hold a position that Dr. John's Gris-gris and Calexico's Convict Pool also hold.

Do any of you have albums that you think are perfect (as in every song is fantastic and definitely 5/5)?
I would have to say DSOTM. The songs just flow so well together, and it has the same great mellow mood.

This is not classic rock, but the Mars Volta's Frances the Mute has to be one of those perfect albums. I just love what they're doing.

And as for a Beatles one, it would have to be Abbey Road, though some of the songs are bordering, and depends on the individual's thought and preferences a lot.

I haven't listened to this release, but most people seem to think the exact opposite.

this is true, but i tend to think of those people as a bit less exposed to prog like me and (im assuming here) slowhand. deloused had catchier, shorter songs, whereas frances is more experimental. its cool. im undecided as to which i like best.

Walrus Gumboot 05-17-2005 05:32 PM

I think All Things Must Pass is **** near perfect

I've never thought about it like that and now that I think back, most of the people who bashed the album weren't really into prog. music. I may have to check this album out.

BludgeonySteve 05-17-2005 06:12 PM
If they would come anywhere close to here I would too..

I'm seeing Tom Petty and the Black Crowes(opening act) on July 18.
I wish I went to concerts :(

Have fun, that'll be one hell of a show :)

pigonthewing82 05-17-2005 06:28 PM

I think Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band is the most perfect album of all time. I love the way all the songs flow. I love the way they almost tell a story (depending on your interpritation it could be a concept album about the life of Billy Shears). A Day in the Life is an amazing closer. It is such a mood shift from Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band (reprise).

I would agree with you if I couldn't say this about most Beatles albums. I figure it goes without saying :D

Hye, wanna bump the Beatles thread? I's at page 5 or six by now

TheDMV 05-17-2005 06:32 PM

A Day in the Life is an awesome song, but SGt. Peppers never did that much for me. I think it's usually so high on lists for influence rather than song quality. Sure it's got some gems, but there are certainley more consistent albums out there. I think Are You Experienced might be perfect considering every song is good. I care less about flow, more about overall song qualities.

lunch998 05-17-2005 06:36 PM

Sgt. Pepper's never did a whole lot for me either. I still respect it and give it a listen everynow and then, I'm just not in love with it.

robo2448 05-17-2005 06:48 PM

I think Animals, Blood on the Tracks, DSOTM, Highway 61 Revisited, Live '75 by Dylan, Live at Leeds by the Who, Plastic Ono Band, Rubber Soul, The White Album, and Wish You Were Here are all perfect or very close to perfect.

lunch998 05-17-2005 06:50 PM

I think Tommy is close to perfect, but I'm such a hardcore fanboy of the album that my opinion is irrelevant.

robo2448 05-17-2005 06:57 PM

I was very tempted to put it in, but it does have a couple of weak songs, and some short, unnecessary songs. I did include Live At Leeds though, and was talking about the deluxe edition with Tommy performed. I think that live version of Tommy blows away the album and is perfect.

lunch998 05-17-2005 07:00 PM

Yea, but I think the number and length of all the fantastic songs easily outweigh the 20 second annoying songs.

And I remember being obsessed with the Live at Leeds Tommy, but now I find that I prefer the studio version more. At Leeds there is unquestionably more energy, power, etc, which is appealing to most people. But the studio album has a different quality to it, I find it hard to explain. There's more feel and melody, it's more musical, sort of the way operas are meant to be.

The live version is still incredible though, don't get me wrong.

Woodstock 05-17-2005 07:05 PM

I listened to Allman Brothers: Live At The Fillmore today. I forgot how good that album is. Man, I can't wait to see them.

gmoneyguy 05-17-2005 07:05 PM

When are you gonna see them?

TheDMV 05-17-2005 07:28 PM

The short ones are just there to advance the plot, they probably could have bben added on to other songs, but it flows well so I don't really mind. I find that Tommy combines flow and excelent music better than many other albums.

robo2448 05-17-2005 07:42 PM

I see how most of the short ones work, but similar to The Wall, some of them are just unnecessary, like Tommy Can You Hear Me?

jpj 05-17-2005 07:46 PM

Most will disagree, but I honestly think Eat a Peach is perfect.

EDIT: Well, I sure know how to kill a thread :(

Concerts in Daytona late june

Hi,

I'm going to Daytona Beach, FL, late this june to visit a buddy of mine. Does anybody know of any concerts, festivals or venues worth going to at that time down there? Not necessarily classic rock, though, anything with a good guitar is good...

Thanks.

Leper 05-18-2005 12:33 PM

I found out something the other day that I never knew before..I was looking at the booklet of my Tom Petty cd-full moon fever- and apparently George Harrisson sings backup on one, maybe more of his tracks (Won't back down i'm pretty sure is one of them). I'm not entirely sure why this amazed me, but it did nevertheless.

ATM 05-18-2005 12:41 PM

Have you guys heard Dinosaur by King Crimson?

Leper 05-18-2005 12:53 PM

lol, i still haven't heard any king crimson.

I think the only King Crimson song I've heard id 21st Century Schizoid Man. I enjoyed the song, but I don't think that I would really like them that much. To be honest I'd probably only buy one of their albums to hear Tony Levin play. He's supposed to be an amazing bassist so I'd like to see what he can do.

White_heat 05-18-2005 01:43 PM

Hello, im new here and my favorite band is the velvet underground. I guess that goes under this thread. So I was wondering if people here like them, because not many people i know like them.
What are your thoughts on the velvet underground?

TheDMV 05-18-2005 01:48 PM

I enjoy what few songs I have heard from the Velvets.

/puts them on

They were incredibly influential, and very versatile. Unfirtunatley, there were so not mainstream that I almost never hear their songs. I've been wanting to buy VU & Nico for a while, but, I have no money.

Jebediah 05-18-2005 01:53 PM

Nico is currently up in the Alt/Indie YouSendtIt thread.

jpj 05-18-2005 01:58 PM

I only have VU & Nico, but I really like it. Heroin is an awesome song.

If you are more of a mainstream person, i think you should buy either their self titled album or their "loaded" album first, they are more conventional rock albums.

TheDMV 05-18-2005 02:04 PM

I'm not mainstream at all really. I was just pointing out that it took me a while to discover them because they get basically zero airplay. I don't care how much it gets played as long as it's good music.

robo2448 05-18-2005 02:29 PM

I have very little VU, but love what i do have. Oh Sweet Nuthin' is amazing. Great song.
